Hmmm!

Google's parent company Alphabet will cut 12,000 jobs, in the latest staff redundancies to hit the tech industry.

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said he took "full responsibility" for the cuts, in an internal email.

The cuts will affect 6% of Alphabet's workforce worldwide, in teams including recruitment and engineering.

This comes days after Microsoft announced 10,000 jobs would be lost, and weeks after Amazon announced 18,000 job cuts.

Mr Pichai thanked staff for "working so hard" in their roles, adding that their "contributions have been invaluable".

He wrote: "While this transition won't be easy, we're going to support employees as they look for their next opportunity.

"Until then, please take good care of yourselves as you absorb this difficult news. As part of that, if you are just starting your work day, please feel free to work from home today."

According to a recent filing with Companies House, Google has more than 5,500 staff in the UK. But it is unclear how many of these will be affected by the cuts.
'Unsustainable'

Mr Pichai announced severance packages for US employees, who will receive at least 16 weeks of salary, their 2022 bonus, paid vacations and six months of health coverage.

He said he remained "optimistic about our ability to deliver on our mission, even on our toughest days".

Wall Street welcomed the cuts - Alphabet shares rose by 3.5% in electronic trading before the stock market opened.

Analysts have said tech's big guns had previously overspent, not seeing a slowdown on the horizon.

Are tech job cuts a warning for the wider economy?
What is behind the big tech companies' job cuts?

Daniel Ives of Wedbush Securities said the layoffs highlight irresponsible spending across a sector basking in "hypergrowth".

"The reality is tech stalwarts over-hired at a pace that was unsustainable and now darker macro is forcing these layoffs across the tech space," he said.

According to tech site Layoffs.fyi, nearly 194,000 industry employees have lost their jobs in the US since the beginning of 2022, not including those announced by Alphabet on Friday.

Hewlett Packard and cloud computing giant Salesforce also announced major cuts this month, as rampant inflation and rising interest rates have slowed growth.

US tech giants have also been facing scrutiny in the European Union, which has started enforcing regulations to stop them avoiding tax, stifling competition, profiting from news content without paying and serving as platforms for disinformation and hate.

The almighty Google o. Hmmmm and companies that people looked down on are even giving bonuses. Mercedes Benz just paid all their devs 7000 euros bonus. Apple isn't laying off and didn't lay off in 2001 and she's seen as the least prestigious amongst the faang.

It seems the faang hype might die down after all these layoffs. I really pity those from third world countries who are on H1Bs. It's 60 days to find a new job or go back home. For Nigerians that can mean a possibility of coming back to emilokan God forbid sha.

Apple will lay off. They dont have a choice.

Sales has been lower than expected and the company is investing heavily in its R & D at the moment especially the commitments to the new silicon chip, which thankfully, is paying off, though slowly.

Then there is the China wahala of chips war and assembly line crises.

The world economy is leaner. Products have to become cheaper. The Apple mini which recently launched is being offered at a starting price of $599. This is lower by $100 when compared to the previous generation.

Apple doesn’t reduce price except something is going on.

The truth is those Americans or others from well-developed nations no get issue na third worlders wey dey on H1B go suffer. Its impossible to find a new job in 60 days time.

Lets do some math

12,000 workers is 6% of Google’s staff strength.

Which means Google staff strength is 200,000 employees.

At an average salary of $72,000 means the payroll is $14.4 billion per annum

By sacking 12,000 in January, they have saved $1 billion in payroll costs

The layoffs have started. Some of their developers have been lamenting on Twitter, even the senior developers that you think they won't get laid off.

Tech companies over-hired as a result of COVID-related growth. Then they could not sustain the growth post-COVID.

Party over. Covid tech boom is bursting.
This week alone:
10,000 at Microsoft
18,000 at Amazon
12,000 at Google.

That is why it's good to be frugal and save a lot of your income when you are on H1B or any other type of sponsorship in any country.

At least for Nigerians with sense

They can relocate to another country while trying their hands on express entry

Or if the money big enough
Use it to enter UK as a student

For some Nigerians that I know who fled;; coming back in such fashion is NOT an option

Definitely save. I am seeing some people even buy houses and cars while they are still on H1B. People are insanely optimistic. Honestly, for a foreign student Canada is the best option as you qualify for a PR immediately you graduate. The route to american PR is long and unforgiving and to think even getting the h1b is a lottery and not even automatic.
