adecz: An answer to all that is simple...we decided that there was something like cheap fuel That's not how free markets work. Or businesses. Businesses do not exist to make things cheap for the masses, they exist to make money. By forcing the communist idea of 'make things cheap' ...that's how we ended up with bad refineries, and so on. Venezuela once had the world's largest refinery...at 900000 bpd. Now as at a few years ago it is down to 100000 bpd...all due to the government trying to help poor people by selling fuel cheap. I hate to say this, but the biggest mistake Nigeria has ever made is to decide there is something called cheap fuel. (I wish we could have fuel at N10 per liter...but then how do we pay for it?) 1 Like |

clinician2x: And the answer is simple...the losses that come from selling subsidised petrol destroy any benefit that comes from removing subsides on kerosene and diesel. It is so simple, yet you Buhari supporters do not see it. |

clinician2x:All we ask for is a "STANBLE" economy It is hard to plan yourself in Nigeria now What is sold at #5, you will come back in the evening of same day , they will tell you #250 I believe when we have stable economy NLC will have to review minimum wage and see to its implementation Things are costly as well in Europe, but it is stable that a lay man can actually plan and even build If you are planning here, the economy will be laughing at you 🤣🤣🤣🤣 |

Cryomancer: This is another reason for opponents to doubt your sincerity. You are already making excuses for him for non-performance throughout 8 years. This is the same attitude GEJ supporters showed during his time. People that condemn GEJ's government were hurled with insults and curses. I was one of the front line supporters of GEJ when the doctrine of necessity was to be invoked and I also campaigned for the election which he won. But then he started to fumble so much that he couldn't be defended anymore. And instead of his hard-line followers to criticise him for wrongsoing, they defended his wrongdoings. The difference with Buhari supporters (though not all) is that they do not defend him in his impunity. Even if they won't criticise him because of party affiliation, they'd rather keep quiet and not defend him. If Peter òbí enters, I'm sure it will be a crime for Nigerians to criticise him for wrongdoing. Ńa curse and abuses una go dey rain on top people wey get differing views. 2 Likes |

Criminals. They are benefitting from subsidy. All the money for health, education, is going to the pockets of these marketers in the name of subsidy. Remove the subsidy. Competition will drive the prices down. |

Pardon me for not reading the whole writeup. The subsidy should be removed! If it likes let it be 1k per liter. Not one kobo of subsidy shoukd be paid as it it a huge scam used to milk the country. My question is that, does it make sense that Nnpc is the only one allowed to import petrol? Does that make sense? What has government got to do with fuel importation? Why must this country be run thus way for goodness sake! Pat utomi spoke of why he chose to support one of the candidates. That as a businessman, banker, trader etc, what the fellow possibly will do is allow anybody, be you trader, banker, oil company, importer and exporter etc to import fuel once you can finance yourself. All government will do is regulate the quality. Eg premium unleaded, to the cheaper quality. Afterall you averagely have 3 options of fuel with different prices in fuel stations abroad. Competition will bring down the prices over time. It will also encourage businessmen to invest money in local capacity. Some will invest in modular refinaries. Eg an area such as akowonjo, Ikeja could have its portable modular refinary with crude brought in by rail through Agege train station, piped or trucked to the refinary or have it built close to the rail. Another could by by guiness road oba akran near the rail where factories have turned to churches or even abandoned etc. Dangote refinary will also join the fray, but should not cause another monopoly. He will compete with others including importers and local smaller refinaries. If you are not competitive, you go out if business, Afterall that is why you are privately owned. |

Re: Petrol May Hit N800/litre On Subsidy Removal – Marketers by Nobody: 8:28am On Jan 23, 2023 |
clinician2x: On the other hand, if we keep subsides, yeah things would be cheap....but the widening deficit that results from keeping subsides would force us to take more loans...which would come back to bite us badly. Also, we would keep losing billions in potential investment, smuggling, and we won't be able to incentivise refineries. At the end, we would be like the famous frog in a glass bottle filled with water, being heated ...experiment. We won't feel any bad effects now, but it will happen...slowly. At the end it boils down to either paying N800 or whatever they set at the market...or paying the same sum plus interest at IMF HQ. Your choice. 1 Like |
