Well, the Taliban took their country back conventionally. They started by seizing territories outside the capital till they get to the capital. They actually engaged the US & Afghan forces. They were not hiding in the mountain and coming out to attack and go back into hidding-Guerila warfare. They regrouped, came out in large numbers and started seizing cities.

When they got to the capital, they successfully push the US and Afghan troops to the Afghan airport.

Russian style in Syria is destroy the enemy totally. If not for US and Turkish military bases. Russia and Syrian forces would have retaken the entire Syrian territory. The tactic was attack a major city. Surround the city and destroy the enemy totally.

The US was just forcing Taliban to leave cities when they invaded Afghanistan. They were using their heavy equipments (air and ground) to push the Taliban out of cities and not destroy them. They were wary of having heavy casualties. You don't push die hard militant group out of a city and you expect them not to come back. They were supposed to destroy them. You don't just send more of your soldiers to death and waste tax payer because one person was killed by saboteurs or because your infrastructure was destroyed. Criminals have been used in war and they will continue to be used. You can't tell me that there are able-bodied men in Ukraine prison just sleeping and eating. They are all at the frontline. This is not the first time. There is no war, that prisoners are not involved.

Nobody is using human wave tactics. The Ukrainians are not doing it. Likewise the Russians. It is unsustainable. The entire Wagner fighters are not more than 50k. In this modern day and age where military possess weapon of mass destruction. If you use human wave tactics, you can loose the entire 50k in days. It is just common sense. This is not WWW II where millions of soldiers are involve.

Bakhmut is a fortress. Taking it will involve huge casualties likewise defending it. Russia didn't attack the city head on. Attacking the city head on will likely produce unsustainable losses. So the Russians decide to go around the city from the north and the south. The troops at the city gate use enormous artilery shells to force the defenders to abandon their fortification gradually by killing them in the trenches and destroying the fortification. Each settlement the defenders evacuate, the attackers occupy it. This is why seizing the city is taking time. The Russians are not just throwing fighters to frontline to die. Because if they do that, they will loose them quickly and will be forced to use your main troops.

No Russian official has come to give anybody time table or talk about their intention. Sorovikin never talked about defeating Ukraine. He talked about stopping Ukraine from advancing, which he was able to do successfully. Analyst come on air to talk about what they feel Russia is planning or their next line of action. Russian regular troops are almost not active at this time. They are resting. The Ukrainians are not launching any offensive any where, in Lugansk/Kharkiv direction, Kherson direction, Zaprophyzia direction. The main Russian troops are resting. They are waiting for a breakthrough in Bakhmut.
