That wasn't what spoiled his chances. What actually "spoiled" his chances was voter intimidation. If you take a look at the online polls, you'll see that GRV was super popular in Lagos and was going to win that election with a huuggggggeeee margin (in fact a great landslide). This made the incumbent to consider playing foul games against him by intimidating his voters and attacking them.
