It's not a police matter. No crime has been committed. Yet.

It's a civil matter and the court can make her pay back the money plus court cost and emotional distress

Like, who the hell does that!!! WHO FORCED YOU TO PUT UP THE PLACE FOR RENT IN THE FIRST INSTANCE??

DIDNT YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR DAUGHTER INITIALLY

WHY DID SHE HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE VERY DAY I WAS GOING TO MOVE IN

How I was able to get a new place that very day was only GOD! The problem now is how to get my funds back and my other stuffs. After getting a new place, I texted her to send my money asap that I need it to pay for my new place since she no longer want to give out her place.

This evil woman still wanted to frustrate me, and didn't even want to refund my deposit

This why I avoid dealings with Nigerians abroad. They are not straight forward. The worse ones are the ones that since they are older than you . they feel that u have to give them special respect.
I treat everyone with respect the same respect I give a baby is the same I give to adults regardless of age.

I notice on the chat with the woman you are saying ma to her etc.. She don see you finish. I would kept it on a business level with her. For Yankee I don't call anybody ma or sir . if I have to address anyone na my name or Mr. / Mrs with respectful tone of voice........

Nigeria culture na scam in terms of respecting your elders .. The elders themselves don't respect themselves. I am talking from experince

I’m not proud of what I’m going to say but in my 33 years in the USA I made a total of 5 friends.

We’re just generally bad people.

Hope you get your money back. Not sure if they have small claims court where you are.

You are just getting to know that your people are bad people? Ever since I came back to this country, I already knew that.

Even on Nigeria here a lot of people are not sincere. I am having issue at the moment with nin photo modification. I paid for it of which the guy told in 2 weeks it will be ready now over 2 months is one story to another. I called him the idiot was telling me that he works for government that I cannot arrest him, I just laughed. I am planning to hit his office with two soldiers soon for refund of my money as he claims that he made payment to REMITA and that remita doesn't refund money. I go collect my money back.

Do you know what country I'm in?

Have you ever watched crime documentaries before? Even detectives know not to get rude to rape and murder suspects at the start.
In interviews they ease them into it. And they eventually snitch and implicate themselves. They pretend to be their friend and make them comfortable to open up.

Same concept here. Same concept with kidnappers and their victims. Complementing and pretending to befriend your attacker helps keep you alive.

Being rude to that thief of a landlady is understandable. But it's just gonna give her an avenue to refuse refunding him.

I know it's hard to understand because nigerians are easily led their instincts and emotions.
Avenue to refuse refunding him for what? The scenario you painted is quite different from the case of the OP. There's enough evidence the OP can use against her, hence no police officer will ' befriend ' her to get evidence.

Since, I wont be moving into the place till the start of Feb (which was two weeks away at that time), I was reluctant to pay the deposit early, she agreed to that, but as the weekend draws by, she started calling to check on me, and indirectly ask for the deposit. After pestering me for three days back-back-back, I decided to pay the deposit.

If you signed a leasing agreement, take her to small claims court and collect your money back,

Wait this is America, a text can act as a contract so use your text to take her to court

OP, don’t waste much time with the police. They will write a report and inform you that this is a civil case. Go and file suit at a small claims court. Keep all the written communications and all the receipts for expenses you incurred moving your stuff from her premises to your new place. You will need this as evidence in court. Keep all the text messages between y’all on your phone. Do not delete anything. They like to see the message on your phone rather than print outs. You should be able to get all your money back and prove intent to defraud that could get you punitive damages.

It's the same concept.

You Nigerians dont understand that you can be assertive and firm without being rude.

Nobody said he should be quiet. He made the right move. I only harped on his decision to pay so much on a rent as a student when there were cheaper options for him as suggested by the moniker i responded to. He can't even confront the police in that case cos his source of funds would he questioned. He'd be exposing himself to needless issues , if he does that. As a student, you have a whole lot of options available
to you, when it comes to cheaper accommodation. I guess he wantedprivacy and do big boi, the naija style, which doesn't work for many. You cut your coat according to your material.

It is you that spoke about the police not being rude so as to get evidence from the culprit/ scammer. It's obvious you think the case is in Nigeria where elders will come and start scolding the OP for being "rude" to his elder. Even in Nigeria that things don't work, I can assure you that the rude stuff you are stressing will not hold water. In the documentaries you said you watched, when someone is rude to his debtor, does he forfeit the debt owed?

Na civil matter .. From now when dealing with people especially Nigerians.. You need to be firm with them and any business transaction keep a receipt or record. Forget Ma or Aunty level things or bros.. You need to be firm and be respectful....

At all cost avoid speaking your native tongue. You will thank me later......

I gave you examples and I've already explained to you.

Being rude is never a way to get someone to do your bidding.

I'm sure you still remember how I was planning to relocate back to naija after 27 years in America. My so- called cousin scammed me to ship 3 of my cars to naija. I just stopped talking to him. I'm not surprised tho....I knew dealing with naija can never end with a smile.

BTW....are you still in naija?

Not true, report her to the Newark Police, any precinct closer to you.

PM, I know Newark very well. Newark police are very lax, max they will give you a report, they might investigate it as there are too many other stuff to do there that are high priority, but if you press they will pay her a visit and she will return your stuff and money….you can also take her to small claims court.

Next time don’t waste your energy writing all those long episodes with a lady, don’t sink to their level and return insult for insult, you will never win that battle especially with someone in Newark and you will feel dirty yourself afterwards with regrets…just stay professional and straight to the point.

If you care to share, what is the street address or street name?
