Why UND
Asides the fact that I got full funding from the school, I was interested in the on going research of an an assistant professor on the use of micro organism in generating hydrogen fuel which is a renewable energy from organic waste and plant biomass, I reached out to him and he advised me to apply, also grand forks where UND is situated is known to be an agricultural state and this will also be of benefit to my research

How did you get funding?
I wrote to the professor whose research interests aligns with mine. An interview was scheduled where I spoke about my research interest and my knowledge of micro organisms and how it will be of benefit in his ongoing project and my funding was approved

Why energy engineering? After Nysc, I worked with an NGO in the northern Nigeria and discovered that a lot of attention was focused on the health and feeding of the idps with little attention to their energy issues , my knowledge in Mcb 405(industrial microbiology) made me understand that asides from food preservation and vaccines, microbes play an important role in energy generation. This spiked my interest and I decided to do an extensive research on it

What is your research interest? The use of micro organisms in generating renewable energy from organic waste and plant biomass

What is your post study plan? After my study, I will be returning to Nigeria in order to apply the knowledge I have acquired in solving energy problems in Nigeria and also reduce the effect of climate change from burning fossil fuel

What will be your responsibility as a graduate assistant?
I will be working as a research assistant in the on going project of the assistant professor

What is your study plan?
I will be taking a total of 30 unit course work during my stay with a maximum of 9units per semester which includes bio energy resources and systems, project management and other related courses

Why are you going to the US?
To pursue a master degree in energy engineering from the University of North Dakota

How did you come about this school?
After an extensive research online, I came across the ongoing research of an assistant professor whose research interests aligns with mine…I sent him an email and he advised me to apply

How many schools did you apply to?
One

When did you graduate? 2017

What have you been doing?
After my graduation and I went for the mandatory Nysc, after my Nysc I worker as a contract staff for Christain aid and dhcbi (NGOs).
After my contract I returned to Lagos and has been volunteering with a microbiology lab where I help design microorganisms as catalyst for bio energy fermentation

What will this degree do for you?
This degree will equip me with the right knowledge to enable me return to Nigeria and apply it in the energy sector as Nigeria not just to provide energy but ensure the energy is renewable and this will go a long way to reduce the effect of climate change

I worked with an NGO in the northern Nigeria and discovered that a lot of attention was focused on the health and feeding of the idps with little attention to their energy issues , my knowledge in Mcb 405(industrial microbiology) made me understand that asides from food preservation and vaccines, microbes play an important role in energy generation. This spiked my interest and I decided to do an extensive research on it .

I feel that your Naija experience should be be linked to your post study plan. How to leverage on this exprience and knowledge after graduate school to work or establish a program/business/research center in Naija.
Your story about working in IDP is very interesting.. it would be nice to see how you would incorporate that into your post-study plans and how you would like to address some of those challenges or how to monetize those potentials.

After my study, I will be returning to Nigeria in order to apply the knowledge I have acquired in solving energy problems in Nigeria and also reduce the effect of climate change from burning fossil fuels.

Your response seems more generic and not specific enough. You need to ‘Nigerianize’ your plan.
Good luck.

Dear Nairalanders,
I'm in a box sort of and I need a clear cut information on how to go about this.

I got an admission for Msc Chemistry with no funding. I sent mails to the department and they said there's no vacant assistantship position at the moment.

I just finished an interview with my potential supervisor and he's willing to accept me in his Lab. He has funding for his research but I can only get access to it on my arrival to the school.
Please what do you suggest I do at this time?
Can I proceed with my Visa applications even when funding will not reflect on my I-20?

Thank you

Any letter of funding from your potential supervisor?
What’s your current deficit?

45k is the big elephant in your application. You have to find a funder unless you have $$ to pay.. Anything that does not give u an offer letter/contract with an amount… could be problematic when you arrive.
Any luck with USC?

Acceptance rate based on what?
Are you aware that nursing is an undergraduate study while pharmacy is a graduate study?

Thanks for your response.

Acceptance rate based on CGPA.

I have a sibling who studied Nursing with a CGPA below 3.0. I'm looking for schools that will accept her for a masters degree in Nursing.

I have another sibling that studied pharmacy with a CGPA above 3.5.

So you dont want to tell the VO that you ARE NOT in school ?
you would want me to come up with stories that would make sense to the vo?

Sure...if I tell the VO that am still schooling my chances of getting the visa might be low
So we should come our with great stories like you said earlier @Biglyanga

I’m not understanding you.. If you have been idle for past 8yrs since you finished high school, you’re likely going to be denied. It would seem that college is an afterthought or pretext for japa . You dont have much of work experience to explain and fill in the gap in ur 8 years.

Per stories, Are you answering my questions or asking more questions?

Have you tried WES evaluation? Also, can you ask your siblings to lead while you support them ?
Do you have funds to pay for masters in Nursing?

Per pharmacy, do you want your sibling to pursue a Phd program?

Not true. Nursing in the US in an undergraduate study.
Okk.
So he'll have to do a related course for masters

Currently in the process of WES evaluation.

As for tuition for masters in Nursing, we hope to secure student loan to offset part of the tuition.

Lastly, I don't think my sibling would want to pursue a PhD in pharmacy. A masters will be fine

Good morning house.

I have been given admission without funding, COA is 40k and I’ve been able to secure education loan of 30k, I read somewhere that education loan sometimes reduces the chance of approval. Please 🙏 I will like to know if that sayings is true or the education loan won’t have negative impact on the chances of getting visa approval. Thank you.

Per nursing, you could find a school that offers scholarship for MSN or PHD programs… you can master out if you dont want to finish your Phd..

Per, Pharmacy… it’s a tough route given that pharmacy is a doctorate program in the US, so why does your sibling need an MS in pharmacy (is that a thing?) when he/she cant practice without passing board??
An easier route is like finding a funded Phd pharmaceutical science program, graduate and work in related industry..
or find a pharmacy school that accepts foreign graduates.. this is the toughest route

Why cant you find something cheaper?

How much is coming from loan company?
