1. I had to become close to my family. I had to become familiar with my environment — this all took significant work and time on my part — before I then became as familiar with them as I am today. These things did not magically happen. I took a change in behavior and mindset on my part to make that happen. By the way, I have lived abroad for over 23 years now. undecided

2. Sitting back and making ridiculous excuses for why you should not do what is common sense is not the way in life. undecided

Causes of loneliness abroad, not only UK:
* Most people do shifts, and the weekend pays are higher. So it is uncommon for friends to be off-duty on same days, or even same time of the day. No time to visit or hangout.
* Working abroad is not like Nigeria where you will have time to gist with your colleagues during work hours. Even if you're not that busy at work, it's unethical to leave your workstation without good reason.
* It's common to have a chat with your neighbours in Nigeria but in the UK except you have Nigerian neighbours (Indians too like to make friends), you might not even know them. Most people mind their business even in shared houses.
* Other places to quickly make friends are churches and mosques, and many people don't attend them in the UK.
* Hangouts (bars and clubs) are not cheap like Nigeria. Friends also hangout less.
* Except you've been friends from home, Nigerians are very careful with making new Nigerian friends abroad. We all know why - we don't trust one another that much.
* You can't hear people discussing politics or sports (football) or "the situation of the country" in the bus or train. Not even someone speaking loudly on the phone. No "conductor my change" or "Jibowu wá o" or "driver take it easy oo" or two drivers quarrelling after bashing their cars - all those drama that keep your mind busy when you are moving around in Naija.

Despite all that no one of them had returned home!

The depressing is as a result of lack of money. Oyinbo people are smart. They keep taking unsuspecting foreigners to do all their jobs and take nothing less than 40% tax on their earnings. You know if every taxable Nigerians were taxed, our own wailing go pass these people.

8 out of 10 japa-ed people will not be able save 1000 Pounds even after living in the UK for 20years! That's a fact....forget about the paparrazi and buga that dey do on social media.

They are fourth-class citizens in most these western countries.

The tax is not all 40% for everyone. It varies in the UK from basic rate of 20% to high rate of 45% depending on what you earn.

I do not feel like a 4th class citizen and neither am i treated as such, so this is not a true statement.

Plot twist: The reason you guys "enjoy" social life in Nigeria is because Nigeria doesn't work. Imagine not being able to answer calls at work here or as a civil servant not being able to ask people to wait on a queue just for you to be eating lunch or gisting with colleagues. cool cool

Not being able to show off at parties by spraying cash or showing up with police escort blasting guns and siren. cool

Nothing like connection for job from one uncle or senator..

The list goes on and on
Reason am well...

It's two different world. You cannot eat your cake and have it.

Here in the UK, virtually all basic services are available and people pay heavily for it. Back home, our people can avoid paying for almost everything and still survive.

It's very possible to live in the UK for 20years and not have a savings of 1000Pounds because you may not even need it to start with. And also it could be very difficult to save up when you consider cost of living.

The regular weekend and night flexing we enjoy in Nigeria is almost non-existence here, partly because people have to work like modern slaves to be able to buy a pint of Foster beer or Stella Artois for 4 to 6pounds depending on locations. With 6pounds, you know how many crate or bottles of Lager that will fetch in Nigeria!

Even their own premiership, they don't get to watch the Saturdays 3PM matches due to their "football blackout rules". In Nigeria, all the matches are aired.

We quite embrace one another in Nigeria, while in the UK, it's all man for himself. This can be traced to culture though! Our culture is well defined, natural, respectful and to some extent quite organized in nature as compared to the UK which is dotted with large sprinkles of nationals everywhere and are often perceived/treated as forth-class citizens.

Tax: Trust me, Oyinbo people are so smart that not less than 40% tax are collected from every taxable individuals. Nigeria tax system is still very poor that more than 60% are not in government tax net. So there's always that money available for social life.

Suffering & Smiling: Most times it doesn't take money to have a social life. We seems to understand that quite well in Nigeria that on Saturday, you can just wear your Ankara and attend almost any party and enjoy yourself.

The differences in the two worlds are quite much, I can't enumerate them all. But one thing is certain, you can't eat your cake and still have it! Nigeria maybe bad in some areas, but certainly good in some too. I personally can't trade Nigeria for the UK having seen both worlds. That's why I always say the people that enjoyed abroad are the people that have the funds to visit and go back to their country.

Very apt. Nigerians abroad are reluctant to relate with Nigerians they didn't know back home. I had similar experience in the US

Yea, Nigeria would have worked if Obi's mandate was not manipulated and stollen by your tribesman whose only interest is just to bear that title "president" like Buhari.

Nigeria will never work in our own time, never. Except the mandate is returned to it's rightful winner, nothing will work.

My advice, remain in the UK if you know what is good for you because we here are about to enter from frying pan to fire.

Interesting to see that you have chosen exactly what you will experience under the government of Bola AHMED TINUBU.
While the rest of us will experience heaven on earth, abundance, working system, better Nigeria of our dream.
He is your next president, forget religious or tribal sentiments.

OP FYI you are the only one crying in the UK
"I love my people but many are criminals" - Israel Adesanya
Criminality is what we christian "hustle" here in 9ja, many hustles are ways of criminally making money
How can a civil servant buy a house in Maitama and still build a mansion in the villa but his monthly salary is 150k!!!
When Nigerians show up in a sane environment where our kind of hustles are frowned at, we complain bitterly

UK is a place where you work for your money which also teaches you to cut your spending in line with your income but here in 9ja we show off
In the UK you don't need a car to live well but nothing wrong in getting one

Depression has no definition in 9ja cuz 99% of Nigerians are depressed without us knowing
A Nigerian getting depressed in the UK is as a result of the unknown depression he imported from 9ja only to get to the UK and discover it.

Our cultural background is far from the UK's and when a Nigerian comes here expecting to continue with his culture back home, I wonder what that person expects to experience in the UK

Go to the UK Visa office here in Abj, see the exodus of Nigerians jostling for UK Visas and your tears will dry up

I think the OP may have been paid by the UK government to discourage other Nigerians from besieging it's country

The principle of working hard for your pay is not popular in Nigeria

For me then, it was not factory/warehouse work. Mine was Residential Support Worker in a home owned by the company I worked for. I was doing night shift, 9pm-7a.m. We had a Young person of 15 years old who the UK govt had taken away from her family because of the emotional abuse she was experiencing with her family.

The home was a 3 bedroom duplex, one bedroom was for the young person, the second was the office, while the third was the sleep -in for staff then downstairs was the sitting room, kitchen, conservatory, laundry room.

I showed up at 8.45p.m, to take over from the 2 day staff as one went home while the second sleeps in the sleep-in room as my backup incase there was an emergency during the night and that person was paid extra £45 to sleep in that house that night while I was awake throughout the 10 hours shift, every 30 mins I was recording in the logbook that the young person is in her bedroom sleeping while I cross my leg in the sitting room watching Netflix and going into the kitchen every one hour to get a mug of hot tea to keep awake and fill the required paperwork before 7a.m😂😂😂😂

See better work.
But thins kind work no plenty.
You were so lucky.

You can even make good use of your spare time to upgrade yourself or learn anything online if you so desired.

My general drift on tax is that my people can absolutely escape tax in Nigeria, let alone paying 20% or whatever least is applicable in the UK.

I do not say specifically "you" in person are treated as 4th class citizens. The generality of view portends to that. Of-course there will always be an Oobama and a Ritchy S. every once in a long while. You get me now!

I feel ashame everytime, I visit a pub/club, especially white dominated and the only sit our boys can buy there is in the toilet to be issuing out tissues and spray perfumes to collect the leftovers.

For a first class citizen like you, you may not understand what these lads were complaining about. In over 20years I've been visiting the UK, there's always one advice I give people....."whatever you do there, do something back home". Many actually want to come back home, but because they haven't return anything back home and there's nothing to show for all their years of staying abroad, it becomes double jeopardy for them. They are the ones we call Uncle Jandor!

Well, its true that many people escape tax in Nigeria. Really, if you look at it, with VAT at 20% for most goods and services, the overall tax we pay is really huge.

You're so right about our boys in the Pub toilets handing out tissues. sad

E plenty but little manpower in the sector. reason it is on UK's occupational shortage list. Before being recruited, it involves so much criminal checks on you, references and trainings.

For that one teenager alone, we had 8 workers working in the home 24hrs. There was a car parked in the garage for one of the day staff to drive her wherever she wanted to go as long it was approved by the house manager. The staff were entitled to 2 meals in the house during their shifts but some prefer to come with their meals.

Reason I encourage Nigerian students in the UK, to look into being employed in Residential Children homes as support workers though it is not easy to get into but if you do and are dedicated, you go enjoy soft work because it more mental than physical and easily get the skilled worker visa and along the line, UK govt would sponsor your trainings and issuing you certificates that would translate to promotions

Be careful of what you wish for! Just because you're unemployed now doesn't mean that you'll wish to be overworked just so you could get paid. Loneliness and boredom can lead to depression if not properly handled. Don't say you were not warned! cheesy cheesy
