You are the one over exaggerating. I lived in Uruguay for 6 years and I'm fluent in Spanish. I moved there when I was 18 years old. I too had to study Portuguese to understand it. And all my Uruguayan friends that never studied Portuguese don't understand jack. And these are people that have even been to Brazil on vacation. And same with my Brazilian friends and people I came across while there.

When it's written, it's easier to try to make out what it means, but when spoken, even slowly, it's hard. I communicate in Spanish and Portuguese almost everyday, and when I mistakenly switch language with the wrong person, they get lost and I'd have to repeat in the correct language.

Portuguese speakers do not necessarily speak Spanish (it is not the same language!). In fact, 4% of Brazil’s population is estimated to speak Spanish.
https://blog.lingoda.com/en/what-languages-are-spoken-in-brazil/#:~:text=Spanish%20speakers%20in%20Brazil,is%20estimated%20to%20speak%20Spanish.

4% is not much.

omohayek:

You are wildly exaggerating the extent to which Portuguese speakers will have difficulty understanding Spanish, especially when the Spanish speakers slow down to maximize their chances of being understood. Your personal experiences are not a sufficient basis for generalizing about the situation for the whole of Brazil: to illustrate, I too have plenty of friends and acquaintances who are native speakers of either tongue, and in not a single case has there been significant difficulty for either camp to make themselves understood to each other with a little effort. This isn't really a matter of my anecdotes versus yours, as language researchers have studied this issue in some detail. See, for example, the following link.

On the Mutual Intelligibility of Spanish and Portuguese

This reality shouldn't be surprising, as Portuguese and Spanish (or to be precise, Castilian) are part of a dialect continuum that covers the entire Iberian peninsula, and extends into France all the way to Italy (which is why I have also witnessed Italians and Spaniards conversing with each other just fine in their native languages). What that means is that if you start from anywhere in Portugal, as you proceed from village to village until you hit the Spanish border you won't see any two neighboring settlements where people have the slightest difficulty understanding each other, and this continues to be the case even when you get to southern France (as long as you stick with the native Occitan dialects).

With the Romance languages, the only ones that are true outliers are "official" Parisian French (which was heavily influenced by Dutch and Old Saxon) and Romanian (which has been isolated for over 1,000 years). All the others fade into each other gradually as you travel through Europe. To put this into the Nigerian context, Yoruba and Itsekiri may seem wildly different to non-native speakers, but for natives of either it only takes a few weeks exposure to get comfortable (here Igala is to these other "Yoruboid" languages what Parisian French is to Portuguese, Spanish and Italian).

As a linguist and a language expert.. if you are intending to stay in Nigeria, I'll advice you learn French because it's easier to learn and we are surrounded by Francophone( french speaking countries) in Nigeria. 70% of the words you see in English lexicons are borrowed French. And french is so interesting that it broaden your horizon and cultural integration is sealed in the course of you learning it. But outside the scope of Nigeria, I'll advise you learn Spanish because it has the highest numbers of countries that speaks it. Spanish will give you opportunities to make friends and as well job opportunities especially in the US. I'm talking from experience because I've seen the practical use of the both languages. I speak French and Spanish.

You're just stating your own personal anecdotes here, when I've already pointed out that I could do the same. Your personal experience proves nothing about the general case. Personal anecdotes are not the basis for making such sweeping judgments, only objective, peer-reviewed research can.

You are quoting articles with no experience whatsoever, meanwhile I live it on a daily basis. Anyone who believes you will find out the hard way when they get there. Do you speak Spanish or Portuguese? If not then it's useless arguing with you. But if you do, then let's speak and the phone and put it to test and see how much an educated man like you understand.
