PurpLChi:alright, I do feel the belt was a cheap knockoff to the previous one. Like they just copied and didn't even acknowledge it. It wasn't cool in their part. |

ValeeLove:It's not a cheap knockoff, it looks very classy and has this legit aura about it. |

ValeeLove:Well, it's still the World Heavyweight Championship so it makes sense to pay homage to the original. However, they upgraded it and put the WWE logo for branding purposes. |

CoolUsername:is that what it is, a remodelled WHC belt or simply a new cheap knockoff belt? |

ValeeLove:Remodeled WHC since it's still going by that name. |

WWE RAW REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS This week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown was largely built around the start of the WWE Draft, which is always kind of fun in the sense that change is coming and we get to learn exactly what that change will be. But it’s also a bit of a ball and chain. After all, they have to interrupt their show to announce draft picks while still sorting through the stories they’re currently telling (and are about to be forced to wrap up sooner rather than later). That’s part of the awkwardness of it all. They only made certain wrestlers eligible for the first night so they could avoid obvious issues like not having to instantly trade champions. But then that just makes it seem as though we’re all but getting a spoiler for the second day. GUNTHER moved to Raw, so Austin Theory is surely headed to SmackDown, yeah? They also had other obvious issues. For example, they had “war rooms” featuring what we were told were “the brain trust of Raw and SmackDown” fighting over who they would pick for their respective brands. But really they were just two doors with a Raw and SmackDown logo on them. We were never told who exactly those people are. They didn’t even bother to let us know if it was USA Network and FOX folks, in a battle of the networks. In fact, the only time those doors opened is when a presenter was coming out with a card to deliver picks. To be fair, it was a good distraction, having the likes of Rob Van Dam and Teddy Long and Shawn Michaels show up to get a pop and read off some names. It just didn’t really mean anything. That’s maybe the biggest issue of all — none of this really feels like it’s nearly as important as it’s supposed to. It doesn’t help that they just spent the past few months completely ignoring the brand split and having wrestlers from each brand appear on any show. Hell, Rhea Ripley is still a Raw wrestler and she’s been SmackDown women’s champion for a month now. At least we’re halfway through! Outside of the Draft, the one show long story was about The Usos challenging Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE tag team championship. Early on, they cut promos on each other. Nothing to write home about there. But later, during a backstage chat, Jimmy & Jey were hyped up by Heyman while they were sitting in front of him, facing the other direction. When he was finished hyping them, he did the thing again — speaking like he was talking to The Usos but actually directing his words to Solo Sikoa, who was given some tape and told that tonight is the night this ends. Whatever could that mean?!? Then it came time for the match and it was moving along as expected — which is to say, they were having yet another good match — when they cut to backstage where Sikoa was watching with Heyman. A call came through, and Heyman delivered the news. “That was the call. This is your night.” And with that Solo took off to the ring. Again, whatever could that mean?!? Before Solo could get to the ring, he was chased off by Matt Riddle, who still has beef. They fought backstage and it seemed he was completely out of the picture. Back in the ring, The Usos were getting the better of Owens before he managed to recover enough to get Zayn back involved. A Stunner was followed by a Helluva Kick and the pinfall came right after. So what did it mean? Well, we can’t know now. But the underlying message is that quite literally everyone in the family let Reigns down and even if the idea was for Sikoa to take care of business, he may need The Usos just as much as he needs Solo. Either way, the tag team titles aren’t going anywhere just yet. All the rest -The “SmackDown LowDown” last week set up the first match of the evening, as LA Knight kicked up trouble with The Brawling Brutes and found himself in a singles match against BUTCH. They had a fine TV match that saw Knight go over clean, something the fine folks in Corpus Christi rewarded with cheers. Despite his booking, LA remains over as hell and he deserves the push he should have coming. -The Street Profits were drafted to the blue brand and then instantly won a triple threat tag team match, defeating Ricochet & Braun Strowman and the LWO. Strowman, for his part, looks to be in damn good shape after reportedly suffering a concussion recently. -Zelina Vega defeated Sonya Deville in a warm up for her match against SmackDown Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley at Backlash. It wasn’t much of a match but the big angle was Ripley returning to television and attacking her immediately after she won. That got a pretty solid pop, as did Ripley head butting Deville and scaring off Chelsea Green. Vega did lay her out before escaping to the back, showing that she can at least get one up on the champ. Does that mean she has a shot in the actual match? That’s what they want us to feel. They really drove it home by having Santos Escobar and Rey Mysterio give her a pep talk. -AJ Styles is back! Actually, the entirety of The O.C. is back, as Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows also finally appeared on TV in a meaningful capacity for the first time in quite a while. Michin was also with them, and they also got to knock the rust off by putting the boots to The Viking Raiders & Valhalla. -Shinsuke Nakamura got drafted to Raw but Karrion Kross was still sure to get a shot in on him backstage during an interview. Hey, at least they stayed up to date with the story they were starting to tell. They’ll finish that up in a match next week. They managed to make this a decent enough show, despite the limitations of the Draft interrupting everything. Grade: B |

If they wish to do 2 world titles (which are unnecessary), no quams. Still, they need to make it feel like they are making an actual world title equal to the UWU title so it doesn't look like a compensation trophy for the 'other big guys' that couldn't influence the great WWE enough to have Roman part with his belt. If it isn't done this way then the idea should be honourably dropped. |

WWE RAW REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS Shut Up Last week, I noted the shots Seth Rollins sent to Roman Reigns’ island. Initially, it all felt very personal and like someone or a bunch of someones in WWE take issue with the booking decisions around Roman’s reign. But I’m also not a completely jaded wrestling fan. I still get caught up in the moment every now and then, which is something I hope never goes away. Anyway, Paul Heyman showed up this week and confirmed that yes, Seth’s comments are part of a larger story. Paul relayed that Roman took a lot of umbrage with “freakin’ clowns” running their mouths about Roman when they know better. Seth’s music filled the arena, followed by Solo Sikoa’s. While Seth truly wants Roman, and we know the fact Roman doesn’t own a clean victory over Seth during his historic reign. But since Roman doesn’t wrestle on Mondays—and he’s smart enough to barely wrestle on Fridays—Seth settled for Solo. Of course, any match with Solo is hardly settling. Especially when the Street Champ gets specific orders as it relates to the man Paul called “a joker.” But therein lies the problem with Roman’s reign and this brand split as a whole. Roman is on SmackDown and according to Triple H, there he and his championship shall stay. Seth is on Raw, meaning its low odds we get a program between the two. That makes a match between Seth and Solo feel rather pointless because it’s not building to anything. WWE already established Roman, unlike Brock, won’t float between shows. Not only that, but the whole Bloodline belong to SmackDown after Backlash. Again, what’s the point? Why tease us with the a match and a feud that, at least in the near future, ain’t happening? Why book a no-finish DQ for Solo and Seth’s main event match on the go-home show for Backlash? The same show that represents the final time we see a lot of these cats together in the same ring on the same show. That’s not on Seth and Solo. They wrestled a fine match, showed a ton of emotion, and did their absolute best. But Jimmy & Jey Uso interfered, even after some issues between Jey and Solo popped up earlier in the show. Then the Undisputed Tag Team champs & Matt Riddle showed up to even the odds. They ran out of time and the show ended. I do have it on good authority, however, that the tapes were rolling. But on an overall solid show, this whole thing left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t like setting up something that, as of now, has no shot at payoff. Roman and Paul taking issue with Seth’s words make sense but WWE’s mediocre execution of the aftermath, including the finish, emphasized the fact that none of it mattered. Roman isn’t wrestling Seth with the title on the line. Seth is moving on to another championship for the time being, and Solo will dodge the Tribal Chief’s wrath even though he didn’t shut Seth’s mouth like ordered. Similarly, NXT booked a tag team championship match between four women drafted to Raw and SmackDown! That means their match means nothing. This situation, along with the one I just critiqued for most of this section, are avoidable. And yet, here I am wondering how to feel after a main event with no larger implications and a rotten finish that sets up nothing because both wrestlers are on different shows next week. Sure, WWE might eventually lessen the brand split rules like they always do, but the keyword is “eventually.” And as of now, “eventually” is a long time away. B-Sides Damage The one thing that grabbed my attention for Damage CTRL’s match with Raquel Rodriguez & Liv Morgan? Bayley’s attitude and performance. Okay, two things. Bayley blamed herself for letting her team down the last time Raw came to us live from an arena, so she saw this as her redemption song. It’s an interesting twist from her previous seemingly shady behavior. Sure enough, Bayley wanted this W. She not only got the W for her team thanks to a blind tag and a pin on Liv, but she interrupted the tag champs during one of their patented double team moves. Raquel put Liv on her shoulders but Bayley, standing on the outside of the ring, grabbed Raquel’s leg and stopped everything. When they got the W, Bayley reacted like she won the Super Bowl. This no doubt sets up Damage CTRL for a future tag team championship match after Backlash. But if IYO SKY loses her title shot against Bianca Belair, which sounds like the safest of safe bets, that creates an interesting problem. Does a presumed tag match featuring Bayley and Dakota Kai instead of Kai-N-SKY spark some static? Or does a IYO loss, combined with a future Kai & Bayley win, leave IYO as the odd woman out? Bianca stirred the pot during a backstage segment. She believes Dakota & Bayley hold IYO back and the Genius of the Sky needs better friends. Maybe the story isn’t about Bayley breaking up the group but rather IYO bouncing because she believes she deserves better. As my dad likes to say, we shall see. Punish Me There’s really not much to an Alpha Academy vs. Ricochet & Braun Strowman match. If you’re here for the meat, then you got an appetizer that only whetted your appetite rather than providing a full meal. In fact, if I I have one complaint of this match, it’s that we didn’t get enough Otis and Braun action. BUT, it’s one more loss for Alpha Academy, and one more time Chad Gable seemingly let Otis down as the big man took the pin while his partner tried a very late save. Maxxine might have a point. And that is the point. Timz-N-Hood Chek Brock Lesnar interrupted the WWE Draft! The nerve! Seriously though, I do like the idea that Brock basically does what he wants and WWE management is far too inept to do anything about it. Adam Pearce tried with some keystone security cats, but we all knew the outcome. Except Cody Rhodes provided a twist. After calling out Brock last week, Cody had revenge on his mind. His music played and while Brock, the security guards, and Adam looked at the entrance, Cody attacked Brock from behind. For Cody, turnabout is fair play and he gave Brock a bit of his own sucker punch medicine. Cody tested Brock’s mettle and while the big man walked away, he now knows Cody is about all that action. And a special shoutout to Cody for calling Brock “Doomsday” during a follow-up interview. Let that nerd flag fly, homie. Xxplosive While Kevin Owens is less than thrilled about hanging with Matt Riddle all the time, he does have his back. Not only that, but Kevin, Matt, & Sami Zayn not only have the Bloodline’s collective number at the moment, but they’re smarter than them as well. This doesn’t include Roman Reigns, so relax, Tribal Chief devotees. But they’re also united. The Bloodline? Not so much. Jey Uso accompanied Jimmy Uso during the latter’s match with Matt but got himself removed from the match. This left Jimmy all by himself. Matt & Jimmy battled to a standstill until Jimmy removed the turnbuckle pad. But KO reacted quicker than my inner child when the I hear the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers theme and smashed Jimmy’s head in the exposed turnbuckle. Jimmy looked dejected as his rivals celebrated. Besides the fact that he and his brother can’t solve the enigma that is Matt Riddle and the Undisputed tag champs, he did it all dolo. No Jey and, most notably, no Solo. Jey ran up on Paul Heyman and Solo backstage with that very thing on his mind. He asked why Solo stayed in the locker room rather than at ringside having his big brother’s back. Apparently, Roman deemed it unnecessary since Solo has a problem that looks a lot like Seth Rollins, but we all know the deal. This is what it looks like when someone gets iced out, and the Usos are freezing right now. Ebonics Miz apparently never learned that repeating sentences or phrases in a language you don’t know is a bad idea. Shinsuke Nakamura guested on Miz TV and, in his native tongue, called Miz the king of tiny balls. Of course, before Shinsuke translated for Miz, the A-Lister hyped the whole crowd and repeated the phrase over and over. Humor aside, this segment set the scene for possibly Shinsuke’s first feud on Raw while also prepping us for the upcoming WWE World Heavyweight championship tournament since Miz used that as the segment’s centerpiece. Miz ain’t winning that chip any time soon, but Shinsuke makes for an interesting component. Squash Nope, Omos doesn’t get a song reference. I’m not giving his squash match against Anthony Alanis. Yup, Anthony Alanis. Take Them 5 Whew, the crowd really hates Dom. Maybe especially Texas since the crowd booed him out the building the minute he grabbed a microphone. All of Judgment Day spoke: Rhea Ripley to Zelina Vega, Damian Priest to Bad Bunny (in Spanish, a great touch), and Finn just being Finn. And the crowd booed them but it felt more obligatory. Plus, they let them speak. Dom though? Nope. I’m always amazed at that man’s heat and how he beautifully plays into that emotion. Besides Dom, the actual MVP here is Finn. During the mixed tag match between Judgment Day (Damian, Dom, Rhea) and the LWO (Rey Mysterio, Santos Escobar, Zelina), Finn sacrificed his well-being during Rey’s 619 attempt. Rather than Damian taking the blow, Finn stepped in the way and took a shot to the back of his head. That, along with Dom & Rhea neutralizing Santos & Zelina, respectively, spelled the end for the LWO. Making Damian look strong and dominant is the right call. Rey taking the L in a tag match with a lot of shenanigans doesn’t hurt him. In fact, with the LWO on SmackDown and Judgment Day on Raw, it actually whets the appetite for another Dom & Rey clash. Or at least more interactions between the two. Backlash might represent the last confrontation between the two for a while, so let’s savor it. I thought Raw was pretty solid for the most part and then that main event hit. No thank you. As I said, that’s not on Seth and Solo but rather the booking and lack of logic applied to their situation. Still looking forward to Backlash but the sooner these draft results go into effect, the better. |

WWE NXT REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS Did Ya Say That? Bron Breakker’s promo confused me. Let’s back up a bit. Trick Williams hit the ring on behalf of his best friend. He called Melo a fighter, acknowledged he’s banged up right now, but he still wants Bron at Battleground. And more importantly for a reference that warms my heart, Trick pulled out the Kobe and Shaq analogy; Melo don’t miss but when he does, the big man grabs the rebound. And Bron Breakker is that rebound. All that makes sense. Best friend avenging his fallen comrade and taking it to the bad guy. But then then bad guy came out with a mic in his hand and everything went sideways for me. Besides sounding stiff saying lines like “I speared you and it hurt you. But I speared Melo through that stage and hurt him worse,” we got weird logic. Bron doesn’t want the championship because he the last thing he wants to do is represent the fans ever again. But he also doesn’t want Melo to hold the title. But he also wants to embarrass Melo in his hometown. Combine that with Bron holding up the championship in the video package and we have a little mixed messaging. I don’t fault Bron for that either. Seems like NXT can’t figure out what to do for a championship rematch in which the challenger cares little about the championship. Making it a grudge match makes sense on paper but maybe a championship match moves more tickets. I’m not in WWE’s books so I can’t say for sure. But if Bron doesn’t want a title but just wants to murder Melo all of a sudden—remember he took aim at Andre Chase and Duke Hudson before going back to Melo—then just put them in a violent match without a championship. I’m looking forward to Trick vs. Bron next week but I hope they figure out a better narrative for Melo vs. Bron II. And I really hope they figure out a direction for Bron. I liked his heel turn, love the new look, and love the attitude. But the minute they put him back with Melo, everything started contradicting and not making any sense. B-Sides Dreams Yes, NXT ended with the women’s division warring with each other over the newly vacated NXT Women’s championship. Yes, a tournament starts next week that culminates at Battleground. But the lasting image for me this week is Dexter Lumis carrying Indi Hartwell into the locker room. Indi got on the mic during NXT’s closing minutes and got real. She talked about her career to this point, the high ankle sprain she suffered last week, and her connection with the fans. While she looks forward to the future, she will never forget her time in NXT and becoming champion. She left the belt in the ring, tried exiting the ring on crutches, and then saw her deranged husband waiting for her. That, combined with her last match, provided the perfect send off for Indi Hartwell. Indi’s love story with Dexter is one of the best things the territory ever did, so making it a part of her last moments there fits perfectly into her larger story. But then there’s that pesky logic eating at the back of my head that washes away all the warm fuzzies: Indi vacated the title while the tag champs did not. I don’t understand that and I wish someone explained it to me. Is it because Indi’s injured and the tag champs aren’t? Sure, I might buy that. But the fact still remains that NXT needs a women’s tag championship. Right? With Alba & Isla headed to Friday nights, how do they defend those titles? If these rosters are hardened in stone as Triple H suggests, then it’s hard imagining Alba & Isla jetting back to Orlando every Tuesday from wherever they are on Fridays. I also wonder if there are enough women tag teams left in NXT at the moment. Toxic Attraction split, Kayden & Katana now reside on Mondays, and all the other women have the big championship on their mind. This is a lot of words to simply say I wish WWE explained their logic better or at all rather than asking us to fill in the blanks with our own logic. Still Can’t Stop the Reign Tyler Bate certainly made a difference during Wes Lee’s match against Drew Gulak. Charlie Dempsey poked his nose grown folks’ business and Tyler made him regret it. And from there, Wes took care of business. It wasn’t the longest opening match and I’m surprised these two didn’t go longer. But it was a fun opening bout that cemented Tyler & Wes as a tandem. Westside Tyler? Bloody Money Another grudge match between Jacy Jayne and Gigi Dolin. But this one ended with Jacy covered in blood with Gigi’s brother in the audience. Outside of Jacy’s crimson mask and the extra punishment she gave Gigi, there’s not much here. At least not yet. This match, along with their previous encounters, serve as precursors to a larger fight. I hope that happens at Battleground because they run the risk in stringing it out too long and making people not care. n95 I dug this match between SCRYPTS and Axiom. SCRYPTS found the perfect partner in Axiom and he looked dominant in various spots. He carried himself well on offense (never a problem) and sold Axiom’s offense. But I’m buying the lede here: Axiom unmasked SCRYPTS! One of NXT’s worst kept secrets is finally out in the open: Reggie is SCRYPTS. Reggie refused to shake Axiom’s hand and got a little aggressive with him. That forced Axiom’s hand. As a result, Reggie did his best Jim Carrey impression and offed that mask. The SCRYPTS thing wasn’t working as a persona, so getting rid of it works best for everyone. Let Reggie sink or swim unmasked because saddling him with someone who did a legitimate Batman impression on the last edition of NXT is a bad look. The next step for him is longer matches that highlight his unique offense but show he’s more than the wrestling equivalent of a gadget running back. Devil’s Night Look...JD McDonagh and Dragon Lee did the damn thing. I’m not even giving you any semblance of a recap or thoughts. Just watch the match when you can and know JD walked out of the territory with a W with a big assist from Noam Dar. While I disagree with JD getting the W since he’s leaving, they made it work well enough where I’m okay with it in this context. A Nightmare on My Street Joe Gacy vs. Joe Coffey continued this week’s trend of really short matches. The show’s pacing is break neck, with only one match really getting breathing room. I argue that match benefited from the time while the rest of the card suffered. But here we are. The match didn’t leave an impression on me in anyway, but I do like Joe getting the W that rewards the Dyad with a championship match against Gallus. Specifically, I liked how: Ava fronted like Joe hit her. While the ref and Joe turned their back on Gacy, the Schism leader hit the Upside Down and that was that. Clever finish that underlined how much this match meant to Gacy, and how much Gacy means to Ava. Maybe now we find out what glory she wants Gacy to chase. We also got some set up for an Ivy Nile vs. Ava match. Diamond Mine watched the match from their gym and Ivy almost flipped a table at the fact Ava involved herself in a match yet again. 85 (Billy Dee Interlude) Dani Palmer looked impressive in her NXT debut! Seriously, I liked what I saw. She has Sol’s innovative offense but also knows mat wrestling and sells a little better at this point. While it does suck that Tatum Paxley seems like a forgotten stepchild at this point, she made Dani look great. Dani’s Frog Splash looked beautiful too. Props to her and hope we see more of her. Takeover Andre Chase? Missing. Duke Hudson? Plotting a takeover. With Chase U’s leader out of commission thanks to the Man in Black, Duke jumped through the window and led the class. While I think he might have an issue calling it “Duke University,” I’m glad we’re finally getting to this breaking point. I just hope they don’t backtrack next week or the week after. Last Dayz I’m still unsure how I feel about a tag team championship match between two teams on their way out the door. While the idea makes me roll my eyes, the match itself delivered because Alba Fyre, Isla Dawn, Kayden Carter, and Katana Chance know what they’re doing in the ring. My favorite moment came when both teams hit their signature tandem finishers only for a member of the opposite team to break it up. It built off their previous matches while also telling us to expect the unexpected. Alba & Isla walked out on top after pinning Katana with yet another wicked looking tandem move. What does it mean? No clue. How does it affect Kayden & Katana? Who knows. It represented a fun farewell for the audience but raises so many questions about the NXT Women’s tag championships. I just hope WWE has a larger plan here because nothing makes sense at the moment. I’m very mixed on this episode. On the one hand, JD & Dragon Lee. And also that tag match. And of course InDex. But everything else just moved way too quickly. The show never let anything breathe and was on to the next thing before the first thing even made an impression. Obviously there’s a lot going on this week in WWE, so it bears keeping that in mind. But very few matches felt like they got the time or attention they deserved for a truly memorable night of television. |

WWE BACKLASH REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS One night after an awesome episode of Friday Night SmackDown, WWE returned to San Juan, Puerto Rico for its Backlash event. The crowd once again treated us to a special atmosphere and WWE paid them off with one hell of a show. My thinking after the Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar match was announced was that by the end of it, we would know pretty much everything about how WWE truly views the former and his place in the pecking order. If you thought he should have defeated Roman Reigns to win the WWE Universal championship in the main event of WrestleMania 39, and the powers that be were wrong for not doing so, he absolutely had to win here, and maybe even win clean. Pretty much any other result would have put him into a box he clearly shouldn’t be in. Thankfully, they made the right call. Rhodes pinned Lesnar. How it happened absolutely matters, but this was as clean a win as you could reasonably expect Cody to get. He was an actually smart babyface and attacked Lesnar before the bell, blasting him with chair shots while it was still legal and only stopping once the match officially got underway. He did as much damage as he could, before he started taking damage of his own. Once he did, Lesnar well and truly made him “earn it,” as he put it, although not to such a degree that it was a clear mismatch. Lesnar didn’t treat him like a lower level guy to be squashed but rather an equal. Late in the match, Lesnar suffered a cut that left his face, the mat, and even Cody covered in blood. I don’t know if it was planned but it made for some memorable visuals, notably a bloodied Lesnar screaming as he had Rhodes in a Kimura. And that’s where the finish came, with Cody countering by stacking Brock and pinning his shoulders to the mat while in the submission, improbably scoring the three count there. It was fast, and unexpected, but it was a clean pinfall victory. Again, I don’t think you could have gotten much more for Rhodes here. They knew what they had for the insanely hot Bad Bunny match and still chose to close the show with Cody scoring this win. That’s pretty damn meaningful overall, especially considering he’s the guy they’re going to be counting on to sell shows back home. The match may not have been a classic, but they absolutely did the right thing with it. The greatest and best match ever When I tell you the atmosphere for this match felt like a WrestleMania main event, I mean I genuinely got that feeling I used to only ever get for major UFC main event fights. That kind of nervous energy that makes you stand up at attention and start shadow boxing and shit. When Bad Bunny’s music hit, the pop was thunderous, an all timer of a reaction. They started singing his song as he danced to the ring with a kendo stick and he felt like the biggest star on Earth in that moment. You almost felt lucky to have him here for this. Then, of course, he went out and performed his ass off like he does everywhere in his life. This man sells better than half the current WWE roster. His timing is good, his instincts are good, even his punches are solid! At one point, he hit a Falcon Arrow and it looked every bit as good as if it was Priest doing it. He’s also an absolute mad lad, willing to take bumps you wouldn’t think a world famous music star would be. Priest — who did a fantastic job protecting him and making sure he was safe while still making it look great — hit him with a Falcon Arrow of his own off a rig through a table out in the crowd. Let’s throw in psychology while we’re at it, as he injured Priest’s leg and then put all his focus on that. Okay, I’m going pretty far here but he legitimately showcased so much in this match. It was a brilliantly done match even before it broke down with The Judgment Day and Rey Mysterio getting involved. And then it really went over the top when none other than Carlito’s music hit for one hell of a great surprise. He teamed with Mysterio to fight off Finn Balor and Dominik Mysterio. Then, Savio Vega showed up to get involved too. The response to all of this in San Juan was something truly special. You had to see it and hear it to believe it. Somehow, the rest of the match was even better than the first half. They teased Bunny winning with the Figure Four — that bad leg! — but ultimately had him hit Priest with the Canadian Destroyer for the pinfall and the victory. After, he was joined by all the babyfaces who had come out previously and hoisted on their shoulders in celebration while the crowd continued going insane for all of it. This was legitimately some of the most fun I’ve ever had watching a pro wrestling match. The unexpected breather In a strange change of pace, a match involving The Bloodline, against the likes of Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and Matt Riddle no less, was put in something of a cool down spot, sandwiched between the bonkers Street Fight and Rhodes vs. Lesnar. It was a breather for a crowd that never seemed to need to find a second wind. Still, they worked so slow it felt as though they were trying to calm everyone down after they were so very hyped for the match before it. Hell, at one point during an extended beatdown of Zayn, they started chanting “We Want Reigns.” Yeah. They eventually got the crowd going and into it well enough, even if they didn’t have the same energy as they did prior. Part of that was the nature of the match itself, which was heavily based around the ongoing story of how well The Bloodline would be able to get along. To that end, Solo Sikoa and Jey Uso ramped up their issues with each other in a big way, arguing over who should be in the match and damn near coming to blows just before nearly losing the match. It also looked as though when Sikoa had the chance to go after either Zayn or Jey, he was about to choose the latter. Soon after, he very nearly hit him with a Samoan Spike. It once again nearly cost them. In the end, though, they managed to overcome their issues and win the match, with Sikoa pinning Riddle after the Spike when he snuck a tag that Riddle didn’t see. They did a good job advancing the story here, but it came at the expense of a better match. Considering what they were going to be doing, though, it makes a lot of sense why they put it where they did. Hey, they can’t all be absolute bangers, right? Brutality > Emotions This one was emotionally charged right from the start. Zelina Vega was given a hero’s welcome, and before she ever got in the ring for introductions she was ringside hugging her family, who were in the front row to watch her challenge for the SmackDown women’s championship. When she was introduced shortly after, she was openly crying. Credit to whoever decided to let that moment breathe before introducing Rhea Ripley, because the crowd responded with a standing ovation as Vega’s tears flowed freely. It made it feel so much more special. It was so well done, with Vega so emotional, and Michael Cole mentioning she was dedicating this to her father, who she lost on 9/11, I started wondering if WWE was planning a surprise and doing a switch here. The way they laid out the match furthered the thought of that as a possibility, with Vega paying homage to Eddie Guerrero and getting a nice flurry that seemed to build to the potential of something more. But Ripley, the dominant champion she is, snuffed that out in a hurry. She used one kick, and a powerful Riptide to emphatically win the match to retain her title. In hindsight, it was always going to be this way. And that’s how it should be, all things considered. IYO! IYO! IYO! The story going into this match was all about the cracks forming in Damage CTRL and what kind of effect that has had on SKY, or would possibly have in her shot against Bianca Belair and the Raw women’s championship. To that end, SKY came out for the match by herself, with Bayley and Dakota Kai nowhere to be seen. This was a point of reference for commentary, who played up the fact that there have been issues and “some on social media believe Bayley is holding IYO back.” Meanwhile, the live crowd was 100-percent by her, cheering every time she got any bit of offense in and booing anytime Belair returned fire. It felt a bit strange at first, considering they were cheering the heel and booing the babyface, but Bianca did a great job of rolling with the punches. They also proceeded to deliver an insanely strong opener. I can’t say enough about the work these two put in. They were snug but still smooth and able to remain physical without slowing down one bit. There were a couple of near falls in there that felt like WrestleMania with how invested the crowd was. It even started to feel possible SKY would steal the victory. But, as I mentioned, this story is about Damage CTRL’s fracture and the cracks grew much bigger thanks to Bayley more or less costing SKY the championship, even though she was only trying to help. This match did a great job of making clear that SKY no longer needs to be in the group to see great success, if she ever did before, and in fact remaining in it is actively holding her back. The other story is Belair becoming “the longest reigning women’s champion of the modern era.” This victory allows WWE to call her as much, so she was always going to win, even if it started feeling like maybe she shouldn’t. The good news is these two are on the same brand going forward. We definitely need to see this again sometime. David Stomps Goliath Seth Rollins, predictably enough, was insanely over the moment his music hit the loud speakers. Yes, they sang. And they kept right on singing when the loud speakers got quiet. Rollins stood in the ring, bathed in a spotlight, getting showered with his tune while Omos stood in the corner and waited. Until he didn’t. I wondered how they would handle this match, considering not just the size difference but the general apathy towards Omos in general. Brock Lesnar got over by lifting him up for the F-5. That was all he needed. Rollins would have no such advantage. So I thought it was brilliant to have Omos interrupt that special musical moment by booting Rollins in the head. The crowd despised him for it. This crowd was such that they made it easy on him, but there won’t be many opportunities to get over as a heel to that degree, and Omos did pretty damn well with it. He played to the crowd’s hatred wonderfully, and he sold his ass off for Rollins. Basically, he was a perfect heel. Omos managed to kick out of not just one but two Stomps. Rollins, desperate, went as big as he possibly could to get the job done — going up to the top rope and hitting a SUPER STOMP. That was enough to get the pin and the victory to a huge ovation. This was a million times better than expected, and Omos in particular deserves a lot of credit for his work here, maybe the best he’s ever been in a WWE ring. A-Town Down Austin Theory, Bobby Lashley, and Bronson Reed had the unenviable position of trying to follow two great singles matches with a triple threat for the United States championship where the finish was basically guaranteed. Despite this, they had a fairly entertaining match, though it was something of a sprint. Reed did a couple big spots, which is pretty much anytime a man of that mass comes off the top rope. He generally looked the part here, and showed why Triple H wanted to re-sign him. Meanwhile, Lashley was booked strong enough despite taking the loss. That’s because Theory, the little shit heel that he is, took advantage of Lashley spearing Reed by throwing Bobby out of the ring and stealing his pinfall. I’m not terribly sold on Theory, and it says something that he was the least memorable of the three guys in this match despite the fact that he’s coming out of it as champion. We’ll see where they go from here, now that the post-Draft rosters take effect this coming week. I was blown away by how great this show was. Give Puerto Rico a WrestleMania already. Grade: A |

ValeeLove:Bro do you even watch the show? 💀 She specifically requested Bayley allowed her to fight for an opportunity a week after Becky Lynch berated her for going from NXT Women's Champ to Bayley's lackey. She then won a triple threat match to qualify. @bolded, I didn't see you say anything when Rhea dropped Charlotte on her face. IWC be like

PurpLChi:Backlash was waaay better than I expected. The matches absolutely delivered and the performers who I didn't expect too much from absolutely overperformed. Also, Carlito got huge AF. |
