Good day Nairalanders
I will be 40 on Oct 19 this year and I am scared the kind of life I have always desired may not be
achievable. Let me list these things that worries me so that you can probably advise me or assist me in achieving any of them.
1) By 40 I had wished I will be living in my house with cars in my garage
Current situation- I am a salary earner who eagerly waits for the salary to drop before my family can eat conveniently every month.
2)I love cars and driving. Was thinking of getting a good car for Uber business.
Current situation- I have not been able to gather enough money to buy a car for Uber or personal use.
3)Seeking greener pasture abroad.
Current situation- I have not been able to have enough disposable income to even get a passport to start with in the first place.
4)Self development. I had interest in programming so I decided to learn coding and all that. I started with free code camp and also this thread by iyenimofe on nairaland has been so helpful https://www.nairaland.com/1383359/learn-web-design-live-nairaland/6#17571611
The issue I have progressing is that of enough data subscription to watch more tutorials.
5)Acquisition of at least Masters.
I have a passion for learning and self development but I struggled to have my HND with distinction. Gathering enough funds to start my masters program has been an uphill task.

Little about my background
I am an HND graduate
I have a sister who is responsible for also.
I have a wife and two kids.
I work 8-5weekdays

This is quite so overwhelming especially in a country like Nigeria, i understand how you feel especially been in that shoes

Here is what i advise and I appreciate God for what I am today

Its better late than never
Worrying will not solve the issue, it will however add to it
Likewise coping and trying to imitate another person is no brainer

Kindly take 15-30mins of your time, to define what you want in life(please put in priorities not needs)
Look out for people who achieved this feat legitimately and successfully
Surround yourself with positive environment and people
Be flexible and ready to learn and adapt to new changes

This points are small but mighty to kickstart changes in your life

Life is no competition. Keep working towards them. If you have passion for learning, with your HND, you should be able to get into a fully funded PhD in America and that will answer your migration quest.

You see people with this kind of advice, avoid them at all costs.

Dream 1-3 translate to more money
Dream 4-5 translate to self-improvement (not a necessity, these can be achieved in your 50s.)
I would drop everything temporarily and concentrate on dream 2 as dream 2 will fund dream 4 which can birth dream 3. Dream 1 and 3 clash and will cancel out each other, choose one.
How long more do you need to be responsible for your sister? Do you need to have your kids attend more affordable schools?

The advise that I have to give from experience as a 40+ year old entrepreneur , husband and father and executive coach is not one that can be contained here. And I will still need to tease out some things to help you find your answers.

I can help you explore options over a couple of one hour sessions, AT NO COST. If you are interested , send me an in mail, and we can set it up.

You’re doing well. Just be thankful & grateful.

My advice don’t answer people telling you not to have babies. If am you, I will just have 2 kids and God bless them for me. After that, try to tell your wife to learn a trade, before she do her freedom you will have borrow small loan or fund her.

Thank God you have source of income, coming every month.

I don’t have many or friends, I only have family friends and we are not that closed. I don’t drink or smoke. don’t have many friends, cos majority of them won’t advice you better, they would only be telling you to do like they do.

And don’t relent in prayers and continue working towards your goals, though it may be late than never. Because our destiny are different from each other.

May God make a way and continue to bless us all us in Jesus name

Solution: Seek for other sources of income maybe online or a tangible side hustle.

What does your wife do for a living?

Also, seek to join co-operative societies where you can dave and later borrow money to buy the car you want for Uber.

Express all these to your wufe as well so that you both can make your goals a family project to strive at.

Above all, no matter what happens, do not impregnate your wife with a baby for now... Cheers sir grin

It's the last point for me. Very important.

Infact, everyone can't be rich

If where you live isn't a crowded environment try save and start a poultry. Since your wife is into selling of eggs she already should have enough customer base. The business will surely boom if you live in an environment where there are no many poultries around.
But watch out for snakes tho

First of all, be grateful for the things you have, view the world in a positive angle first.
You have a wife and two kids, so you know how many people in their 40s who are lonely and dying to just have a family.
Some have a spouse but no kids
Some men can’t even sustain an erection and are going suicidal.

Then at the other angle, the truth is that we all want more, but it is never too late to achieve whatever you wish to achieve, there are no time limits for anything, you can start whenever you wish and stop whenever you wish to stop.
You can still learn and take some IT certifications, choose one and focus on it and begin to apply to jobs online to get better

I have a sister who am responsible for also.
I have a wife and two kids.
I work 8-5weekdays

We worry too much about life. Iam same age as u but not yet married. Yet I have all money and possessions any man would want.

Life is no competition. Keep working towards them. If you have passion for learning, with your HND, you should be able to get into a fully funded PhD in America and that will answer your migration quest.

Stop beating yourself up. It is great that you have set a target for yourself. If you have not met the milestones , reset it again and start working towards it with the things you have learnt from your earlier failures.
Set a new realistic yearly and 5yearly target. Re-evaluate and restrategize at 45 and 50 year old. Celebrate your little achievements to motivate you for the big ones. We are always too competitive and comparing ourselves with others. DONT DRIVE YOURSELF INTO DEPRESSION!
Don’t forget there are people your age with no jobs, no money, no wife, no children and no good health! Thank God for what you have achieved and continue to work on your targets.

I think you are doing okay. You are feeding your family so be very grateful as many Nigerian families can't feed.
