Your privileged opinion.

1month rent plus deposit and 6 weeks living expenses would probably be about £3k. That's fair for someone coming to start work few days after arrival. A student would defintely need much more.

There's a reason why the Home Office doesn't require so much proof of funds for someone coming in with a Tier-2 visa. They're coming to work not to spend several months worth of their savings. It's totally wrong and anyone who didn't plan along the lines of that mess is not the one at fault here.

Of course, it would have been better if he came in with like £10k in addition to the £10k of Visa and travel expenses (for a job with Annual salary of about £23k).

What has this got to do with being privileged? Do you need to be privileged to know that you need to plan well when traveling to foreign country? Yes traveling with just one month rent is a crime.

When you have no accommodation waiting for and your company is not paying for your expense then coming with anything less than 3months rent and expense is a crime.

Absolutely. He's been here for 5 weeks and is worried he's running out soon. That's fair "just-in-case".

See this scenario: Someone gets a job of £23k. He spends about N3m on Visa. N1m on travel. Keeps extra N3m for "just-in-case" after getting a contract that he would start working few days after arrival. Now we are insinuating he should have brought in an extra N5m?

I think the guy tried biko.

Thar is not enough for just-in-case as the reality has proved.

I totally agree with you, Justwise guy is very quick to judge and I recalled how he judged me 2 years ago, and this got me sad but I cried to God that answers prayers by fire and today, God has changed our story in the most tremendous way! God is sooooooooo real! I’m still shocked at how God has helped us and has been sooooooo Faithful!

In this UK journey, all you need is God and don’t forget God once He has settled you.

God I’m grateful and I’ll come back here by God’s Grace to tell you how God performed mighty miracles in our lives.

Mortgage buffer is different, 20 months buffer is also a very privileged position and I'm proud of you o!

However, 90 days isn't feasible for most people coming to do a low-paying job like Care. Let's be honest. I sympathise with the guy, I won't join in bashing him for not having 20-month buffer. He came to work not school.

Ideally the Employer should even be responsible for him from Day 1 till his first Salary. It's Employment, not Vacation.

For the guy in question....... A 90 day buffer, should be the default position....... Just-in-case....

The benefits of having a credit card ......... It bridges that gap .........😂😜

Okay, thanks very much. I will do that on Monday

No, you are not allowed to do any job outside your COS field. You can't work in a warehouse while under a Skilled Worker visa as a carer. Apply for care jobs, you can work unlimited hours now in a second job provided its in the same field. Contact care agencies for job offers.

Your privileged opinion.

I understand where you're coming from but honestly, It's not privileged. It's simply practical.

Two things:

1. Even in your home country the advice is to have six months or so of savings kept aside, even if you are fully employed in a stable job.
How much more when you are going to a brand new place with a contract that states that shifts will be discretionary (assumption)?
Especially given the recent news that reflect that this is a common occurrence.

2. I doubt justwise or anyone else is criticising the decision in order to castigate the OP. The overarching goal is to make it clear to others watching that it wasn't a prudent decision and one they should avoid.

I certainly would have preferred people to highlight the tough side of things when I was moving, to be prepared for all scenarios.

Absolutely 💯.

I only reacted to the "You mean you came to the UK with only one month rent money?"... Like it's such a crime.

Of course, people should come with as much as they can especially now. But asking such questions to someone asking for advice is off! It was understandable when those questions were being asked to students but someone coming to do work should not be asked such even the Home Office doesn't ask for such.

The 6 month savings you are referring to is what he probably used to pay for Visa, IHS, Rent Deposit, Rent, Feeding, etc so far. These Care Employers are just being irresponsible and normal acts by relocating Employees should not be called a crime.

Yeah, folks should learn from the situation and pack more money like the 3 months buffer being referred and hope for the best.

Oh I don't mean I've had bad experiences. I've been extremely fortunate by the grace of God. Everything so far has been great and even better than my best case scenarios in many cases, but I made sure to plan for the worst case scenarios as well when I was coming, based on the posts that people had shared here regarding their difficulties in various areas. Things like having a buffer of funds, possibility of not getting a house to rent on time, knowing I might have to do some casual work before getting a role in my field etc etc.

I just meant that it's important people drop those tales of difficulty as well.

If you are registered on Experian, Totally Money or Equifax, you can log on there to check your eligibility. Most CC companies allow you to check your eligibility before applying. cheesy

Before trying though ensure you have registered on the electoral roll, been paying bills via direct debit ....these could come in handy in them seeing you on the financial space cheesy

You can try it with my referral link https://americanexpress.com/en-gb/referral/tEMItOhbvx?XL=MNANS kiss

Hi, i've registered on Experian, checked my credit score and it's 757 out of 999 (fair, not even good or excellent).

I'm 6 months in the country as a student but when i applied for the CC today using your referral link, it was denied.

I'm on the electoral register as well but i haven't setup any direct debit yet - i just did that today for my phone bill. I used to pay the monthly bill manually.

Is there anything i can do to fix this- even paypal instalment payment was not approved for me same with Klarna?
Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by bigtt76(f): 7:07pm On May 20, 2023
Were you on the electoral register before applying? Registering online does not automatically mean you've been listed. By law, the Electoral Register is updated on the first working day of every month except October and November.

How have you been paying your bills? Standing order or cash? You should look at doing direct debit or standing orders if not. Also look at taking a contract-sim only phone deal with your phone network instead of pay as you go. It helps cause they will debit you using direct debit monthly. What bank do you use? Ensure your bank reports your DD to credit score companies.

When applying as a student, best you quote a low annual salary amount. Don't go and be quoting £24000 as your income when everyone knows as a student you can't earn up to that due to the 20hr restrictions.

Allow sometime (say 3 months) before re-attempting. All the best kiss

the emboldened explains a lot.

You have to show some committment to specific payments consistently and timely. If you can register on Creditladder, try to report your rent monthly. Once you're seen as one who doesn't miss payments, all these approvals will start falling in your laps.

You mean you came to the UK with only one month rent money?

Call him to get some money, family, friends etc .. while you keep applying for job here.

Speak to your landlord/agent etc to see if you are allowed to defer on your rent.

Ask your employer to help you with some money for the rent while they take it off your pay when you start working.

I agree 100% with @Solumtoya that this response is 'Privileged Opinion'. It is possible there is some sense in what Justwise was saying, but the way it was put across is just not wise (my opinion).

Granted, Justwise has done some fantastic work on nairaland but sometines his responses (like this one) is'nt fair. I think Justwise conflated the financial requirements for STUDENTS (Tier-4) with that of workers (Tier-2).

As someone who has worked (as admin) in a firm that issues CoS, I know for a fact that we have the choice of either selecting that we will make maintenance funds available to the worker we are sponsoring, or we could tick NO. In the latter scenario, the worker is responsible for keeping their PoF in a bank for 28 days to show that they have money. There is a reason why the maintenance PoF for WORK visa is different from STUDENT visa. This is because for WORK visa, the worker is expected to be paid (IN FULL) from date of commencement of 'Work' (I put work in " " here becasue onboarding/induction/training is considered as Work.

It makes sense for a student arriving to have some 'buffer' of more than a month (well, that would already have been submitted in PoF anyway). But for a worker, 1 month is enough, as the worker is expected to receive their first salary not more than 1 month of arrival... This is common sense.

References:
https://www.gov.uk/health-care-worker-visa/how-much-it-costs

The first screenshot is part of the CoS application for a worker where the sponsoring company is agreeing that maintenance funds will be available for the worker. In this screenshot, we ticked YES. It means the worker is not expected to show any PoF.
If we ticked NO, then the conditions in the second screenshot must be met by the worker.

I see nothing wrong in what Justwise said though. I agree with you too that just one month pay is ok to bring as a Skilled worker but as a project management freak, you got to be prepared against any unforeseen circumstances. No harm bringing more than a month's buffer pay after all it remains the person's money.
