He should change course or write another JAMB. Biochemistry is one of the difficult course in the country because most lecturers don't know it but they are too arrogant to admit that.

Your younger brother? this statement simplified that you are same person. However back to the topic 5 carry over in third year? The only way he can escape spill ?only if they are still in first semester.
Stop being ridiculous, what's the big deal with him having a spill, what's important is that he graduates well. For a 4 year program in uniben, the cumulative percentile is 10% for yr1; 20% for yr 2, 30% for yr3 and 40% for yr4. Uniben is just writing first semester exams, and uniben doesn't split ur carry overs, you write it again, you get a full mark, he should forget about the craziness, work real hard and believe he can still make a very good 2'1. That's the point, even if he gets an extra year, it doesn't mean shit. He needs to start attending classes, reading 2 times as hard, and studying and practicing with lots of past questions. Academics is pretty straightforward, just follow the rules and you'll succeed.

Very impractical advice. Characters dey this Nairaland

To the Op, depends on if he's just starting 300L or not. If he's just starting, I believe that you can accommodate 5 carryovers over two years if he doesn't add to it. I schooled in UNIBEN and course registration limit was 50. Most times your available courses hovers around 43-48, so a little room to fit in some 2 unit courses.

In an extreme case, he can work with his course advisor though. I know some colleagues that were able to fit in more than 50 units in our final year with some short corner ways.

This is at the discretion of the course advisor because it's an illegal practice.
Re: My Younger Brother Is Having Serious Issues In The University by HNICEARTH: 7:06pm On May 21, 2023
He will definitely spill. Nothing wrong in spilling but rather let him know it's about time he gets serious.

He can drop some courses and fill in his COs. Get serious and make sure he clears those COs and the fresh courses with good grades.

In his 4th yr, he will still drop some mandatory courses and fill in those other mandatory courses he dropped the previous year. Also makes sure he clears with good grades

He will then proceed to spill, take on those mandatory courses he dropped in his 4th year.
No room for errors or any COs. He should be 💯 focused.

Funny enough, he might end up having a better CGPA than some of his course mates if he is able to get good grades. Only difference is that they will graduate a year before him, serve before him. But again he might have a better head start in life. Sometimes, after school and service destinies do vary. Who knows?🤷🏿‍♂️

I just had this discussion today...school is not for everyone..Instead of wasting money...he should invest in farming or other business and do certifications to become a master of his craft. Parents need to get over this desperate needs for a degree...even in the US, a billionaire is paying people not to go to college because he considers it a waste.

Now I don't think it's a waste but we often enter for a course we don't like and don't want because of cutoff then we keep on...then finish terribly and then realize we can't get a job with 2.2 or 3rd class and then regret the whole thing...why not cut your loss early and move on?

I left dentistry ...felt ashamed and later got full scholarship to study what I really enjoy Engineering and graduated with honors. I wanted to be a dentist for the money really..I enjoy the handiwork but the studying I hated and the professor...I withdrew after 2yrs...everyone was shocked. 10+ yrs later...no regret

Your brother can make it. Depends on the units of the courses sha. Buh he can honestly.
I'm a recent graduate from a federal university with a 2.2 degree in Biochemistry.

And yes he should go meet the course adviser. He's the only one in the best place to let him know d real fact

If I'm in your shoes, I'd advise him to leave that department and go to a social science department. He should be able to start from 200 level. He might finish well in another department. And it's not even like biochemistry is a good course to study in Nigeria. Advise him to switch to an easier department to have a good start.

Bro there are lecturers meant for this, he needs to talk to those lecturers.

It is that lecturer that will tell him what he needs to do.

Secondly you need to check your brother why would someone have 5 carryovers?
Is it money, gambling, girls, flexing or cultism.

You need to focus on the main issue rather than beating round the bush...

You need to ask him what the problem is.

carry-overs are not diseases. i remember when i was done with 400 level in the university, i was having 5 carry overs, 2 in first semester and 3 in second semester. when i came for the spill overs, i cleared everything and went for nysc that same year. so what is the big deal in having carry overs? adding one year to clear your outstanding courses will not remove anything from your life

I think he should discuss with his course adviser, and make findings from people's experience in his school also.
I know someone that was sick in year one and so failed some courses. In the year 2 and year 3, he dropped courses to accommodate the year 1 courses and took those courses in year 4. When he went for result upon graduation, the courses dropped were calculated in his result for that year as F. This was not Uniben though.
My advice: he should do the courses for that year and add as much as he can from the failed courses.

Please bro. Let's assume that someone had some carry-overs in their first semester exam at the 100-level, and fortunately, that person passed those courses in their 100-level second semester exam. Will that person still have to retake those courses again in the first semester at the 200 level? Please enlighten me on this.
Not possible to do a first semester carry over courses in second semester

Bro. tell him to drop some of his current or present course to fix in all his carry over courses. Spill over or extra year doesn't make him a failure, is part of learning process. Also he should work hard by reading his books.

And don't try comparing him with you because he's not you, even twins that were born together have different interests in life.
