This is a funny situation.
For those supporting this new tax on Nigerians, I want to ask. Do you renew your voters card every year?

We play a lot in this country, and that's why we center our prayers on selfishness. How? Most people's prayers are for them and their families to make it or be exempted from this hardship. People are still hailing the clueless Tinubu who is only good at generating revenue for making life easy for himself, family and friends. How are the poor breathing now? Please tell me that Hellinues is buying fuel at 185 naira; I need someone to tell me that. Mtcheeeew

Awon ole. What do you expect from an agbero government. Unnecessary billing. They are a step ahead in introducing toll gates in all our roads this year. Everything APC was against when they were not in power are gradually introduced little by little.

I am not a Tinubu fan but i don't have problem with this policy but for few concerns.

Here is why.

In England, you pay 3 things on a car mandatorily. These are Road tax. you pay tax to government for using their road. Every car in UK pays this. UK government makes billions of pounds every year from it. We pay insurance and we do MOT every year.

The government needs money to run things. Nigeria is owing almost 50 trillion. That debt needs to be paid.

Here is my concern with this policy

Timing: Nigerian's are suffering already. You removed Subsidy that skyrocketed commodity price and PMS price without anything to cushion the effect on the people.
The price should be reduced to 300 naira which will give government 30 billion each year assuming we have 100 million cars. 30 billion can do a lot on roads in a year.

Whatever takes money out of people's lean pocket should be avoided for now.

Electricity bill is going up in July

We don't have data to track all cars in Nigeria to ensure compliance. Agbero will harass Nigerians unnecessarily. making life hell for motorists.

Ogas at the top will print receipts and take the cash away except where it must be directly paid to the bank and online receipt generated which road safety can verify on the go when they ask a driver.

Tinubu handlers should tell him that those hailing him will soon join those mocking him if the policies do not have human face.

People are already suffering.

You said the government needs money because of our external debt. Tell me, are they (politicians) not the one embezzling the borrowed loan?

How are you sure they won't still embezzle all these taxes they levie on nigerians?

Are the politicians ready to sacrifice themselves?

Haha it is only Igbos and non apc supporters are suffering, the rest which are apc supporters are swimming in luxury. Even okada man that supports apc is swimming in luxury, because this policy favors him and his family.

If they had said 300 niara you would have still come here to type everything you just typed and then proposed 30 naira. That is the Nigerian way.

So 1000 naira per year is now too much for people who can afford cars? Can 300 naira even cover the cost of printing the certificate?

My people.

It's not a question of N1000 or N10. It's a question of a just point for taxation.
No government wakes to slap any taxes like that no matter how small.
When one registers one's vehicle and pays for the registration, one automatically earns a Certificate of ownership of the vehicle.

Again, you don't need to print anything. The world has moved beyond that. Everything i pay in UK. you get an email with a verification code. give that code to anyone and they will verify.

Can you propose your own solution lets see sir. I hailed the policy and made a proposal.

lets see your proposition if any

That was the first thing I identified in your proposition: UK, UK, UK. If the UK were not doing it, you would have decried the policy totally, then? It is obvious UK-specific solutions cannot be directly applied in our context when our underlying systems are far from theirs.

Yes I do have a proposition: my proposition is that the government's proposition is suitable and workable does not need couter-propositions!

The existing roof of ownership certificate issued on purchase of vehicles nko? Oh OK. This one will be yearly abi?
They should just come out straight and say it is for increased revenue and we will pay, instead of creating stories.
Anyway, we that are members of a certain party, and are indigenes are exempted. All we do is show our ID. grin

Nice one, it will also generate Revenue..
While stolen vehicles are reducing, government purse will increase... hmm! if the price won't be later inflated it nice. Easier to own a Car bt difficult maintain . Nice one.
Tactics like this will forcefully reduce cars plying roads and force many people to use more of commercial vehicles, government should provide mass transits system [with CNG & LNG ] cheap fare can encourage commutters.
you don't sound intelligent: government is milking the masses with different approaches and all you think of is praises.

They didn't just wake up and add a new "tax". From the write-up, this law has been in place since 2012, but not enforced.
I see the 1k as a mere administrative fee, not a tax. No just cause for complaint.

N1,000 per annum looks like a chicken change.

Average population in Lagos: 15,000,000
Assumed no of cars on Lagos road ONLY: 5,000,000

Revenue from POC: 5,000,000 * N1,000 = N5,000,000,000 per annum Lagos only

All they had to do was increase license by ₦1k instead of this confusion .
Driving license is not renewed every year.they want something that will be bringing in money every year.imagine 10 million car owners paying 1k dats 10bn,and it will still be shared among few ppl.
And am sure driving license will still be increased but they want this particular money seperately just to use and compensate some ppl

Shut it there!!! You are pained that other Nigerians can afford cars and use the roads like your pathetic self, so you want extortion that would force the struggling citizens off the road.
This is nothing but another round of extortion that would make more money available for the criminals to squander and steal.
In this economic climate you are supporting more load on the masses as if you are better off.

Re: Proof Of Ownership Certificate: FG Imposes N1,000 Annual Fee On Motorists by sonnie10: 2:53pm On Jun 27, 2023
Nobody pays yearly for vehicle title (proof of ownership) ,
Even the sections of law quoted does not mention any fee for that purpose. This is unconstitutional.
Some other agencies will follow. C of O will be renewed annually.
It’s a slippery slope that will snowball into people losing their houses .

I think I have to agree with you 100% on this one. Nairalanda1 does fit the profile...while he does not carry himself as a hopeless asslicker like the bat griller and his cohorts, you can't help but notice how he vehemently downplays everything else and elevates only that his point of view, which typically is oddly specific and quite detached from realism. Meaning that truly his responses cannot be from wide depth of understanding but rather just responding and re-echoing his pre-determined transcript, kinda like a customer care officer, na the thing wey dey say make he talk he go just dey talk, and as such he simply can't handle the curveballs thrown, and so just downplays it.

U don't type with wisdom, and obviously not innovative as a person with knowledge.. u want good system but will FG print Notes excessively to give masses ? They must generate to provide for masses .. because we haven't been lucky in past , doesn't mean we forever won't be.

Cut the cheap young man's, many of us type see cars as asset bt hell no, its liability . Why struggle to own a car? For show off? If u need it, no matter the policies u would keep it. If because of 1k u now here throwing tantrum, better register for uber to dey raise maintenance money.

Carry out 2 or 3 very visible projects & then bombard the media space with 'achievements'...

His points are "well articulated" and I would dare say he's a rational thinker. I have had a few exchanges with him. But he always tries to come across as a "true" capitalist. Which is fine and dandy. But two things stick out for me. His profile is relatively new. And he's suggestions are never about cutting government waste. Always about squeezing the poor to suffocating death. I have no plans to tango with him on this platform again
