Foreign graduates failing can be for many reasons ... doesn't have to be because they are "dullards" or got certification from sub par foreign institutions. Would a head chef trained in the US ... running the kitchen in a top restaurant in the US ... be good enough to qualify for the same position in Nigeria? 3 Likes |

This confirms that Nigerian universities are still maintaining the set standards. The FG only needs to do the needful by funding it appropriately and paying doctors to prevent the japa 1 Like |

d33types:In fact our exam methodologies here are museum materials. Yeah. My school had issues with MDCN then in 2005 cos non-physicians like lab scientists etc took up some posts like consultant hematologosts etc. There was serious beef with physicians and non physicians like lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses etc. MDCN just jumped in and discredited my school. And we just finished our final exams. Had to take this MDCN exam in ABUTH Zaria Quite harrowing 1 Like |

DOM7: They are not hyping anything. If you follow the trend, people have been failing the exam steadily. Most people commenting do not know that Russian trained doctors are even failing the exam. They failed yakata during the last one. I wish we could have a break down of the failure. 2 Likes |

Okiton:Having the highest grades and scores doesn't necessarily make one a better professional, though high grades are very fantastic. I think most best practising professionals are from around between 60% to 75% grade holders. I don't think I have heard of a fantastic high profile Doctor or Lawyer in the field who is a first class holder. I am curious, I love all my kids to make first class, but distinction grade makers thrive mostly in the academia, administration, research etc. That aside, they should list the countries those who failed obtain their certs from, that is if it is getting prevalent, so that parents could be guided better. But I also believe that among the list of the 704 foreign graduates that failed the assessment, about 55% of them could be very good in practicing as professionals, even better than some new medical graduates in Nigeria. In Nigeria we lay too much emphasis on difficult exams., and less on practical. 2 Likes |

Moniya4Real:Try and understand before making comments. Many diseases and management protocols are endemic to some certain climes. We don't include Cystic Fibrosis, Thalassemias, Marple Syrup disease etc in our medical training here because u would most likely not see any patient with such in 100 years of practice here. Is it too hard for you to understand? 1 Like |

updatechange:1. Not most of ours. A good number of Nigerian docs still fail PLAB/USMLE 2. You would most certainty not see an American practicing in Nigeria. What you see is Nigerians trained in UK/US coming to fail exams in Nigeria. Not American or British citizens. So ultimately the failing docs are still Nigerians 2 Likes |

Jeezuzpick:Knowledge has gone beyond 'loading your brains' and pouring it in the exams. And when you actually see a patient with such cases that you loaded your brain, you freeze. Thats basically what we do here. Knowledge is more advanced than that. Besides Americans or British have smart folks too who load their brains too. They are called nerds 1 Like |

ItisWell22:If you say you were managing Cystic Fibrosis, Thalassemias in Nigeria, well, I won't say you are lying. But its rare. You won't see questions from them in Nigerian medical schools, that's for sure. And you won't see MDCN examine you on them. About the familiarization you talked about, you're only given 3 months. 3 months to do what others did in 3 years. Not fair 1 Like |

Some of those countries with cheaper and easier admission for medicine only produce half baked Doctors. Concerning the exam too, The Nigerian education system is designed to value theory more than practical so don't be surprised that some of those who failed the exam will passed same in US and the UK. It's just like when you set an exam for a roadside mechanic and a graduate of mechanic engineering(automotive). 1 Like |

africanman85:That's because there are no checks and balances in our healthcare system. Nigerians should demand that government opens up an avenue to enable patients and their families sue erring medical personnel and get instant justice from any injuries, deaths or other losses suffered in the course of treatment as a result of negligence on the part of the personnel. This will help our healthcare personnel to sit up in their practices and tone down the overbloated ego. 1 Like |

spiceadole: Most of these people were those that couldn't pass Jamb to study Medicine here in Nigeria and had to go where the requirements are low, most especially in fellow African countries like Benin Republic, Cameroon, Gambia etc, and some cheaper European countries like Ukraine, Moldova and Latvia. Do you think people will study medicine in places like US, UK, Canada and Australia, and won't stay back in practice in such countries but jostling for practice license in Nigeria? 1 Like |

I grew up knowing medicine to be a course not for everyone but this generation you see nurses and doctors being active on tiktok and you wonder how they really got to be doctors and nurses. Those days to even study pharmacy or pharmacology requires you to be an extremely brilliant student but reverse is the case today. Let’s take our health seriously cos the medical sector is a sham. 2 Likes |

jaephoenix:I'm sure the MDCN are aware of the peculiarities of the different training environments and as such would base their assessments on general cases. Besides, there's no those foreign trained docs wouldn't have been taught diseases like sickle cell, malaria etc which are endemic in Nigeria if they attended good medical schools abroad. |
