Hello Nairalanders,

I have this decision bothering me. I know it is a personal problem, but I believe everyone need some guidance at every point in life.

Straight to it, I have been considering Japa for over two years now and I think the opportunity might be here but I am having a cold feet.

I recently started working for a foreign company as a software engineer and the pay is decent when converted to Naira. Enough to live an averagely comfortable life. But my challenge now is that, I have been talking to some friends that are outside the country and they keep telling me how life is not easy there and cost of living is super expensive out there.

I currently earn $3000, which I plan to either save and travel or startup a business here in Nigeria. Please, Nairalanders with experience, is it worth japa to live an almost average life for almost the rest of your life or investing here in Nigeria and growing wealth?

The healthcare and quality education benefit is there as an advantage for japa though.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Frankly speaking, you are already doing well. What you earn is enough to give you a decent life here in Nigeria unless you just want to follow the bandwagon.

Most Nigeeians abroad who earn that amount over there are most times left with $1500 after paying bills.

I have have friwnd who had a remote job with a company in Europe. He relocated out of excitement but now he is regretting. His colleagues who work remotely are entitled to a yearly vacation to the companies country. They have more savings than him and still visit the country (Amsterdam)

It's ok if you still want to try

Yes.
What about my personal friend that will return from Canada also? Do you believe that? He didn't divulge everything but I sense that he got an opportunity he doesn't want to miss. He said Interest rate has astronomically gone up.

We are engineer distinctively and view things differently in this life.
COVID-19 plus Ukraine war have make things worse everywhere. There is recession everywhere. Japa is good for people earning meager or doing nothing in Nigeria.
A PhD holder working under FG left for UK to do msc program and start complaining. What are we going to call that? That's what I am talking about. Let's just pray for Nigeria to be better. 220M people can't all leave the country. The rate at which US embassies are denying F1 visas in Abuja and Lagos these days is cra.zy. They know we are at our lowest low.

With that salary in a place like Canada, the tax deduction will not be less than 37.5%.
Can people in USA verify tax deduction on 120k USD salary?

Op, dey play dey play. They say you can earn 10k USD/month. Ask them what will be your take home from it. How much are you going to pay for rent in place where get 10k USD/month job? Let him go to LinkedIn/Quora and ask questions from gurus in his field who are blacks/Nigerians. He comes to Nairaland to be more confused.

Japa is for strugglers! My neighbor that left for UK in 2021 has returned with his family. They sold their bungalow before they left and returned few months ago into a rented 3 bedroom apartment in another area. Many don't have the courage to do what this family just did. For instance, I learned that to renew 2.5 yrs visa for a family of 4 will spend around 15k pounds..
For a single guy earning 120k, he is in the 24% tax bracket but like everything American it is not as simple at that. He is not paying 24% to IRS though he may pay other taxes including state tax along the line (you will see the direct impact of your tax on your life, your community, even your airports). Back to the tax.

His tax on 120k will come down to $22,680 (19%)
That is $16,290 plus 24% of the amount over $95,375.

Keep in mind that he is also accumulating Social Security income for his later years in life. His checks are waiting for him in future.

In addition, most organizations have 401k matching which means he gets extra thousands in free money for investing part of his income into his future. He also has access to traditional and ROTH IRA. Data has shown that each year he contributes, say $6k, yields him $60k per annum in 20+ years time.

US is the best indeed. I think the tax rate in Canada for that salary will be close 40%.
Even as single Nigerian guy, 80k USD is still a decent take home even in New York or San Francisco I think.

How many people make 3000 dollars easily like that abroad.... They work like mad for every cent they make abroad unlike here that we work less and still collect salary.

Again, everything isn't about money o.
Think of other factors too.....

At time,Japa is worth it,cos you're not doing it for yourself alone but the future of your children. In Nigeria if you're a big man and you lose your job without no proper investment, omg naa square one you will go back, but not the same in Abroad, once you lose a job ,you can easily go for another one. Here in Nigeria no job,no better health care,no security and basic amenities. Even if you're doing business in Nigeria, you need to be strong. The only invest I see in Nigeria is to invest in real estate. Buy land and keep, later you see it.

1. Your pay of $3,000 makes sense in Naija and will benefit you more in Naija than jands. Don't ruin a good thing in your quest for something else. I was going to say "in your quest for something better" but I realized obodo is not actually better or as rosy as we like to think.

You earn quite well with that sort of net pay and that's global wise. I will only japa if that job is not secure or there's no more development opportunities for you. I live in the UK and I have worked both in South East Asia and the North America. I can tell you not a lot on mid point salary range earn what you are earning. Cash is wealth, even better when what you have is your own disposable income

Take those who can or are making money continuously either with their phones, laptops or as investors, japaism matters as long as you can work in your home and enjoy the atmosphere unlike here where over 70 percent citizens live in watch your back environment

Lol, you can't 'hide' how wealthy you are if you have it, at least aside buying cars, you will invest.

If you are not in Canada, go to indeed, check average gross job pay in Canada, factor in the taxes and pension contribution, then you know what the net is. Mind you it is the Canadian dollars. Then factor in the expensive rents and monthly expenses, then you will see clearly what I am saying for yourself without asking a lot. You can even check IT jobs too.

If you're truly earning 3k USD in Nigeria then japa is not worth it at all.
Just make sure you're saving enough and not spending too much to fund the average life, with time you can diversify into business when the economy recover a little and still continue doing your remote job

Don't even think about japa at all because if you're earning 3k abroad it'll be marred with deductions and exorbitant tax, besides, cost of living is relatively cheap here, although the recent stupid government policies has scattered everything

there are a lot of openings bi-weekly for software engineers and his profile will get juiced up when he is up there and he uses the foreign flag. Yea, some may want to cut cost, but we have those who want their programmer to relocate due to sensitive data stuff. You can't compare being over there and here at all.

Even if he is out of job, he can still do menials...but here, when the jobs start drying out, he go hear ween...with this failing economy. most don get bp now. I also work freelance. That's why i tell people who are making it in freelancing now and e dey sweet for them...gather and japa...before you get trapped. stay there

You know how many software engineers that are out of real employment and do this freelance things? There is a reason they outsourced abroad from Nigeria. They want to keep cost low. He is unlikely to be hired by same company even with his experience in the company if he is on site.

You're are missing a lot, Japa now.
There is joy in making USD and spending in naira, you have access to classy pussiez (not with money) because of confidence.

But on a long run, (if you Japa now) you'll give birth to kids that have little stress in achieving greater heights.

Having a second passport/dual citizenship will open up more doors for you especially when you want to move to other countries for anything.

You're also underpaid as a Nigerian, except you're paid usd10k/month that's when I can say don't Japa. No remote job can pay such easily
