Why Do Nigerian Parents See Pidgin English As "Bad English"? by kokoBoii: 7:04am On Jul 26, 2023
Honestly, I feel like if most of the subjects we struggled to understand in secondary school e.g Mathematics, were taught in pidgin English, alot of us would have become mathematics wizards...

You can't go to China or Japan and find their teachers teaching their students in English, that is one of the reasons I believe these guys are witches and wizards when it comes to anything Maths and Sciences...

Why do our parents feel like pidgin English is a forbidden language..

Sometimes you see some parents seriously warning Their kids never to speak pidgin else they get flogged...

People don't respect pidgin english as correct english and many of the areas where the pidgin language originate from the people was very violent and aggressive.
To some educated parents it makes u irresponsible before them.

No 1 reason is because they want them to stand out amongst others whenever they find themselves.
2. Is because they might eventually study in the western world or work there.
3. Pidgin will make them local championsπŸ˜‚ grin
On the other hand
Nigerians don't value what they have, they feel it's barbaric, meanwhile even some of the whites wants to learn our pidgin.

In China, they don't teach them in pidgin too

U could have advocated for being taught in Indigenous language

Pidgin English is colloquial English

Why the parents and teachers frown at it is because it affects your proper English Language Learning and usage

Yes

L1s (Native/mother tongues) speaking might be acquired without going to school

But u have to be schooled to learn to read and write it

That's why Nigerian Languages are taught at schools

Been taught in indigenous languages doesn't make sense because we are one country and pidgin English is the language that we all speak and understand in Nigeria irrespective of region. That means someone who speaks Igbo would have to be restricted to going to Igbo schools...That would have made more sense if we were not a single country.

Do you realize that pidgin English has varieties

Hausa man own different to Warri o

Yeah

So actually, in China where Mandarin is the official language, not every Chinese speaks Mandarin as a native tongue, u will have to learn it at school

U don't have to be taught in a language u already know, Education is all about learning

You may speak pidgin or Yoruba, that doesn't mean you can automatically read it or write with it

You still have to learn about it

Pidgin English is a phenomenon

No standard Alphabet, spellings, tenses

It's hard to put down for universal usage

Look at the class of people who speak it and make your conclusion. Last I remember, books aren't written in the lingo nor do the speakers bother to improve themselves literature-wise. You either pick one, mastering English or pidgin. there is no in-between.

You can't use pidgin English to write WAEC or report for an international journal.
Children should be allowed to speak Pidgin when they are in an informal setting and good English when necessary with proper diction too.
Native languages should also be encouraged

It affects the proper usage of English grammar

E.g using "eat" instead of "chop" and vise versa

The earlier we adopt pigin English as our official English the better for us. Rather than going round the circle f00ling ourselves trying to please our masters.

We can regulate and standardize it.

Just like South Africa, Australia, Canada and even US have their own English version.

You buy your babe clothe, another man remove am...that is division of labour.

Monkey smart monkey smart na becos tree near tree.

Cat fit swims no mean say hin be catfish.

Make I chop their money small, na so olosho take start.

As goat take stand, na so them go take price am.

E don tey wey yansh get centre parting.

Dem dey count meat, kpomo sef dey raise hand.

Come chop no mean say make you come belle full.

Fly wey no dey listen dey follow dead body enter grave.
