You are unlikely to get an accounting job.

If you go to the UK, you are likely to settle for unskilled job but will still make enough to survive.

Your current balance is insufficient for Canadian study visa and you also can't apply for the family at once. The applicant needs to go first.

UK is your best bet, otherwise you can try Europe itself. I.e EU countries or Russia.

Hello chief, kindly reach out I believe as an accountant with good experience there is something in the fintech space that you can buildon with. Currently working on building a product in line with finance I believe we can work together, I'll say you should try to leave the country ASAP. Good luck.

With your years of experience and the savings, I’d advise the following.

1. Apply for GRE and get into PhD in the USA (it’s oftentimes fully funded).
2. Make sure the PhD you get into is a STEM program so you can easily get 36 months post study work visa.
3. Let your kids learn auto mechanic, photography, and or plumber. They can use it to earn by the side when they are in the States.
4. Make sure they learn (3) while you guys are still in Nigeria - that way, you won’t have to spend so much on the skill acquisition.
5. While in the USA, your kids can learn programming from launchschool.com after school. It costs $200 per month.
6. While you’re going through your PhD (you’ll have roughly 5 years for it and they will be paying you monthly - it may not be a lot though), your wife can be going through accelerated nursing program - oftentimes, nursing agencies would do her papers after she pass her NCLEX.
7. Send some of your kids to Canada (they can always file for you, the parents thereafter).

As a PhD student, if your paper has a good citations and you have good recommendation, you can apply for EB2 visa yourself. Which would also help you get your greencard which can help your family.

I hope this helps.

Best advise I have read so far and I will advise you to do your personal research on this. I am currently on this route and hopefully leave Nigeria by year end.

Re-skill and upskill yourself in either business analysis, project management, data analysis and other in demand roles in the UK or Canada. Best advise is to start now before you relocate. I just finished my training with one of the consulting companies he listed, I have revamp and optimized my CV and LinkedIn profile and already getting job interview invites without even applying, so I am hopeful I will land a role once I get there within 3 months because the only reason I haven't is because of my Visa status as most companies dont offer visa sponsorship.

The easiest way to get visa sponsorship job is through the healthcare sector and thats probably the caregiver route. If your wife is willing to sacrifice and go for the practical training and do some online training and certifications in care, you are halfway there. Next thing is to get a sponsor and that can be sorted out. My wife's COS should be out soon, and the path we took is a process oriented one to ensure she is given a job and not just a COS.

I was once at a crossroad like you but I did my personal research, talked to a few friends and family abroad, and made my decision and I have been on this journey since December. Its not a rush rush thing, it requires planning and precise execution. The most important part is already taken care of by you...FINANCE. Nobody will loan you money to relocate so kudos to you.

The final decision still rest with you, pray to God if you are a believing Christian/Moslem and ask for his guidance. I run my own consulting business and this year has been tremendous and when I look at it, I think its actually a test of my faith to either stay back or leave. I am making money more than any other year and its actually a temptation to stay back but this decision I am taking should have been made 6 years ago. I regret not making it then but I have learnt and will keep on learning.

Dont be afraid and dont get scared by tales from people here or abroad that its going to be tough for you there. Our destiny's are different and if you are a hardworking and go-getter here, you will definitely make it there too. Age is not a barrier, someone that trained with the consulting company I trained with got a PM job at 55 years and with no prior experience in project management. All you need is transferable skills, tenacity and can do attitude. Be ready to read a lot and keep learning. Google and Youtube is your friend. Lots of free training out there. The only reason I paid for the PM training is because of UK/Canada job experience and job reference. Nobody will employ you without a good job reference.

I wont even talk about starting a business here with your N20million, please don't dare it. You are not a business person and you don't want to loose your hard earn funds.

I will update this comment by year end and let you know how its going with me. I wish you the best in whatever decision you eventually make. Cheers.

xyzando:
I will strongly advise you to embark on this noble adventure if you have the opportunity. Please do not listen to anyone advising you to stay back. For instance, we have up to one million Nigerians that are resident in the United Kingdom. Despite all the shout about how tough it is to settle abroad, I cannot count up to 0.1% of these residents who have gone back to Nigeria. Be mindful that 0.1% of 1million is 1,000. I am waiting for anyone to provide contrary figures.

What you are contemplating is called Economic migration which is even practiced by citizens in developed countries. For instance, there are 1.3million Britons currently residing in E.U. countries. So many went for better economic opportunities despite being citizens of the 5th largest economy in the world.

I relocated with my family at the age of 45 and my life has been reinvented beyond my expectations. This is within three years!

What you require is discipline, persistence and focus. There are abundant opportunities in the developed countries. The economy of these developed countries is primarily driven by the Private sector. The economic value chain is unbelievable which gives room for novel job roles.

When you relocate, simply upskill/reskill etc. if you require a corporate job. However, you can still earn a decent living with blue collar jobs as a warehouse operative, care worker etc. These roles are in abundance and you can never be out of work. With your wife, the monthly bills can be shared. Honestly, you both can get by except you wish to live an extravagant life of alcohol and clubbing.

If you are coming to the U.K, please explore organisations like Tritech, itonlinelearning, stl-training etc. They train you in Project Management and prepare you for job interviews. They also provide work references as you will execute live projects with them. With this skill, you can easily attract jobs paying £250 per day.

He can apply for the EB2 from Nigeria. The minimum is stem degree with 5 years of work experience and he has 15 years but then accounting isn't seen as STEM

It is hard to get sponsored visa for my field of study. I'm a Chartered accountant.
You already have a solid base here, why throw t all away in seeking adventure in a foreign land, no matter how enticing, you should be creating that future for your children, Agriculture is a Powerful place to put your money, but in whatever Agro business you want to venture, start small, learn, practice, learn the ropes, when you are strong you can invest massively on it, lock your funds in a safe low yielding interest savings/fixed while you learn what you learn. Also been a chartered accountant, you will always get something doing in Nigeria, ALWAYS. you are already a king here, don't throw it away chasing shadows, build capacity in business, that 15 years you want to use and labor for another, labor for yourself, by the time you are 60, you will be travelling to the us or uk for your children's graduation.

At this point just guide your children to study courses that would make them japa easily in future like nursing, medicine, tech etc.

This is the most valuable comment so far, try and see, which sector needs a service like feed production for poultry and go into it, what about cash crops? Coconut, palm tree plantation, sunflower etc.

Please don't join the bandwagon of poultry is good without any knowledge as many poultry needs feeds.

Madam might be against all these but winter isn't for 40+ yrs old to adapt with even with jackets and all, you'll still feel the huge difference.

All the best.

An older friend of mine is in a similar situation as you, but his circumstances is quite different.

He is in his late 40s and a successful businessman in Nigeria. He wants to relocate to Canada with his family of two daughters and wife. Both him and his wife have SSCE qualifications as their only education.

What are his chances or what can be do to relocate to Canada? He asked me to help me find a suitable pathway for him and I've been thinking about it for weeks now. Can anyone help?

Your situation is very dicey in the sense that you havent been doing business, starting one now when Nigeria has almost gone to the baboons, hyenas and jackals won't be an easy one. You may end up wasting the 20million savings trying to figure out the business and before you understand the business secrets, you may have folded up.

What does your wife do?

How about relocating alone first to countries like; Finland, Norway, or other unpopular Scandinavian countries for a masters? Finland have a very affordable masters programme for international students, Norway used to be tuition free for Nigerians not until this year they started charging high tuition fee if not, Norway would have been your best bet cos there are plenty jobs, I have people there.

Make more research about studying masters in Finland, etc. If it would cost you 10million to relocate alone, try it and use 6million to setup a pharmacy shop for your wife before you relocate.

But if that route will cost you more then try the next suggestions below:

Map out 10million and setup a pharmacy shop. Your wife will need go on an internship at any pharmacy shop for some months before yours is fully ready to get an idea of how to run the biz with the registered pharmacist you guys would employ.

Setup a small office for yourself to start consulting as a Chartered Accountant. Print good business cards and proposals and submit to supermarket owners, etc to help them organize their stock and bookkeeping, with time you will start getting jobs. Also add external auditing to your portfolio of what you can do.

Create a linkedin profile on this new business of consulting. Inform friends, Church members, clique about your new consulting firm.

Save 7million in a dollar account and keep 3million for running family for now.

Start now to guide your kids to love nursing, medicine, radiography, pharmacy, software engineering, etc. This will prepare them to face future with greater chance of survival.

May God see you through and please don't panic, you are still on top, fear will push you into depression and cause you to start making irrational and foolish decisions that will ruin your years of hardwork.

Remember you are still better than over 150million Nigerians out there.

I pray God guide you to make the best decision at this critical time, amen

I used to be a proponent of starting a business and growing bigger, but with what is going on in Nigeria right now, I won't advise anyone to do that. I mean your 20M is a lot of money, and ten years ago, it would be worth x5 of what it is right now in value.

So anyone with about 950M naira today is not a millionaire in dollars, how frustrating can that be? So after you make all your money as Nigerian Elon Musk, your money will still have less value at home and away. it's not worth it.

I will always advise people to pick Scandinavian countries, this society will clean up all the shit in your life. For real. The Nordic model (google it) is a birth-to-death life coverage, that covers every resident in the country, both foreigners as well.

So Just living there, your kids will be educated for free, healthcare is free, and a one-way ride to citizenship after four years even as a student.

But can you learn a new language? That's the price to pay.

I recollect I was in a similar situation many years back, left a high earning job after my company divested from Nigeria, having worked 15 years across several multinationals with good earnings, I traveled a lot, invested in properties and manufacturing company as a side business. My entrepreneur journey was a nightmare, taxes, unruly employees, ease of doing business doesn't exist in Nigeria. I invested in footwear business, opened an experience store in Lekki, the govt fixed the road for over 14 months making the location inaccessible, online delivery is another sad tales. Tried fish farming but didn't progress for obvious reasons. My N50m investment eroded right in my eyes. I gathered what was left and eventually for Netherlands to study, I started a business while in school subsequently my family joined me after graduation. My spouse got a job solid job after upskilling while I continued growing my business.

It was not rosy starting all over again, going to school, working and juggling family but there was a light in the tunnel especially if determined, focused and hardworking. Give it 3 - 5 years you will build up and settle down with a clear visibility into your future. Your chances are higher when you upskill, reskill or even transit your career. Technology, supply chain, project management, agile, fintech
The Nigeria environment is not enabled for wealth generation and distribution, how many successful small business owners do you know among your friends, family, secondary school mates, church or mosque, neighborhood and other associations you belong too. It is a struggle for everyone, the government keeps widening poverty demography leading to more people unable to apply logic and reasoning to problems since they have been skewed towards survival.

Do not get me wrong, there are people making good money legitimately in Nigeria and I have got network of friends still standing tall however in an environment where nothing is certain, cost of living steadily increases, insecurity and many socioeconomic variables contesting with your strive to succeed. Relocating might be attractive if you have the means and staying back can be a good option if you can withstand our peculiarity.

If am not a graduate, i cant run express entry? Just asking.
ayandee:

You don't have to go to Canada via study route. Like someone advised, learn French aggressively for one year. I mean learn it like your whole life depends on it. Attend french classes, listen to French people talk, speak French and become very comfortable with it. Depending on how much progress you have made studying, you can go to Togo or other francophone countries for 2 months for language immersion. Then write TCF canada or TEF Canada. You will spend money learning

This was what I did. I didn't go to Togo though.

This way, you can preserve your 20million and use it for proof of funds when you get invited to apply for Canada PR.

Join the Canada TEF thread and the express entry thread in travel section.

If you are considering this route:
1. Find out if you are eligible for FSW on Canada dot ca using good ielts score plus B2 french. If you have a masters already, that will be a plus.
2. If you are eligible, apply for credential evaluation with WES Canada.
3. Start your French journey and while at it, write ielts general.
4. With your language scores and WES report, create an express entry profile. When you get invited, apply for PR.

Not an easy route but it's doable.

Can u tell me what and what jobs are menial jobs? What does menial work look like?
MeineMutter:

It’s a pity that we don’t know your profession and/or whether you have transferable skills or not.

Based on the little you wrote about yourself, I will say these:

- go but don’t plan staying longer because you are already old for their system. Going abroad will give you certain exposure and change your orientation about some things.

- be ready to do menial jobs all through.

- don’t plan to stay longer than 5 to 7 years if you don’t want to be useless.

- save while you work there and start commercial projects on your land you have back home. Don’t think of using your savings to build any house ‘to your taste o’ - at least while you are still abroad.

- it would be better if you and your wife can pull resources together to build more units of simple rentable structures on those land.

- when it is 10 years (max), leave and go and face your investments fully in Nigeria.

Things would have improved a bit in Nigeria but it won’t get to the level of that of western world.
