Photos, Identity Of Nigerian Army Captain Shot Dead By Female Soldier, Nkiru Okonkwo In Adamawa

Nkiru had ordered all motorists returning home during the curfew to turn back, but they explained that they were workers on essential duty.

Captain Bitrus Sini has been identified as the senior army officer killed by a female soldier enforcing a curfew imposed by the Adamawa State government, a military source told SaharaReporters on Monday night.

The female soldier also identified as Lance Corporal Nkiru Okokwo had shot Sini who intervened in an altercation between her and civilians at a checkpoint in Yola, the state capital.

SaharaReporters on Monday reported how Sini was shot.

According to reports, Nkiru had ordered all motorists returning home during the curfew to turn back, but they explained that they were workers on essential duty.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri last week imposed the curfew after hoodlums broke into a government warehouse and looted several items, including palliatives meant to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy.

The soldier was said to be adamant despite the explanation.

“Some people stopped at the checkpoint and explained themselves as workers on essential duties, but the female soldier insisted they must turn back,” a security officer at the scene had told journalists.

The security officer added, “A captain came forward to intervene. Unfortunately, she had already cocked her rifle, so she just fired and killed him accidentally.”

It was learnt that the army officer was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, where he was confirmed dead, while the female soldier was arrested and whisked away by soldiers who arrived at the scene.

Speaking to SaharaReporters about the deceased, a Major in the army said, “The late officer is Captain Bitrus Sini, I have known him for over five years, a very gentle officer. Unfortunately, he just got married last year December.”

So sad! I guess the captain didn't identify himself as a captain in the Nigerian Army and the woman too was too trigger happy.

Anything can happen in a charged environment of a curfew but this is one of the unfortunate recurrent issue with most of our security agents; they are always itchy on the trigger. Rest in peace Captain. Orderly room court marshal for Okonkwo.

There are numerous issues within our internal security architecture.

Army vs Army
Custom vs Army
DSS vs EFCC
Police vs Army
DSS vs Correctional Service officials
Police vs Civil Defence
Immigration vs Custom and more........

I think NIGERIA needs serious intervention more than NIGER REPUBLIC.

When they shoot bandits, they 'escape' with bullet wounds but any friendly shot at a innocent person is always fatal.

Those people have no respect. Gosh
They will take over your life and land and call it no man’s land
People who have no respect for boundaries and culture

How can a soldier just cock her gun and shoot directly at another unarmed individual? No warning shots, Says a lot about the type of training she received....... angry

I was like this female soldier before. Always firm on my decision, but life has thought me that it is best to leave room for others opinions and it is good to sometimes, reconsider.

However, naija uniform guys see themselves as god or somewhere above God. I traveled to SE last weekend and you need to see how this tiny police officer was talking to me. You don't even know me, I was just greeting you after you stopped me, why the hostility?

At the end of the day, we are all humans. She will learn the very hard way.

Not surprising at all, the Nigerian Army is one of the most unprofessional institutions in Nigeria that regularly kill unarmed civilians

I can bet he was in civilian clothing and she didnt know he was a Captain. Had he not been a Captain, they would have labelled him an 'armed bandit' and that would have been the end of the matter. This only made news because he was a Captain

Tension was high ,

She was trigger happy and perhaps have been to bornu state or have been in the war front and she has PTSD

Not sure the captain was on uniform .

The civilian wey dem tell say curfew dey wey come out too created an atmosphere of trouble.

So sad, I thought they have a slang they use to identify themselves. btw why should the army be used by a state governor to impose curfew because some hungry people decided to loot, where are the police?

Just married last December... So sad.

Whichever way, person wia join army knows he will die anytime. The young lady is over zealous and she should pay for it. This is how they kill innocent people on the street.

Why should they give the woman gun sef to enforce curfew.
I have a brother that is used to walk gently and sometimes briskly while crossing the express. But one certain occasion when a less speeding car was still far off he ran across like a mad man as if egungun pursue him. When I cross the road I asked why he ran like that. His reply was that didn't I see a young lady was in the steering when he was about to cross. His response baffle me because he said he doesn't want to receive Pélé, (sorry) like how a certain young lady told a man after she hit him sometime ago.

Very unfortunate. Our government's ineptitude and poor consideration for the masses is leading people to loose their tempers easily...this graduated from a sudden raise in the standard of living to hiding pallatives to breaking into the storehouse for the pallatives to curfew to relaxed curfew to crowd control to this...
