That President Tinubu knew he would implement the removal of subsidy and floating of Naira soon after inauguration but had no plans to manage the consequences of the these major policy shift paints a scary picture about his future policies.
My suggestion is that Tinubu could go on and appoint Wale Edun the Finance minister as well as appoint his President Economic Team for the usual armchair 'economic indicators' advice. Have you heard of state capture before? The fulanis have your so called nation in a vice like grip! WhisperedNoise: Tinubu is clueless. He is not a leader. Imagine removal of subsidy without precautionary measures, now he wants to reintroduce the subsidy he swore never to reintroduce. What he wants to do now is paracetamol after headache, because inflation has gone up with the original price hike, so even if PMS is resubsidized, it won't guarantee lower costs of goods and services.
He has bastardized the dollar rate too. Unemployment has shot up astronomically. Inflation is more than 50% for many goods.

Re: Tinubu Considering ‘Temporary Subsidy’ On Petrol by adebanjiso: 9:17pm On Aug 15, 2023 |
The news that President Tinubu is considering a "temporary subsidy" on petrol is a welcome development for many Nigerians. The removal of the subsidy in May 2023 had led to a sharp rise in petrol prices, which has put a strain on household budgets and businesses. A temporary subsidy would help to ease the burden on consumers and give the government time to find a more sustainable solution to the problem of rising fuel prices.
It is important to note that a temporary subsidy is not a long-term solution. It would only be a stop-gap measure to help Nigerians cope with the current economic situation. The government needs to find a way to reduce its dependence on imported fuel and develop its own domestic refining capacity. This would help to stabilize fuel prices and make them more affordable for Nigerians in the long run.
In the meantime, a temporary subsidy would be a much-needed relief for many Nigerians. It would help to protect them from the worst effects of rising fuel prices and give them some breathing space until the government can find a more permanent solution.
I also want to add that India is a good example of a country that has successfully implemented a temporary fuel subsidy. In 2022, the Indian government introduced a temporary subsidy on petrol and diesel in response to rising global oil prices. The subsidy helped to keep fuel prices down and prevented a spike in inflation. The government eventually phased out the subsidy in 2023, but it was a successful measure in the short term.
I hope that President Tinubu will consider the Indian model when making a decision about whether or not to introduce a temporary subsidy on petrol in Nigeria. It is a good way to help Nigerians cope with rising fuel prices without having to commit to a long-term subsidy that could be unsustainable. 1 Like |

Our leaders now consider running away from it to facing it. PS if you believe the subsidy removal is all that there is to our current inflation problems then you have no idea how world economics work....cause for your mind we are insulated from external factors...... Just compare the prices of every service and commodity in Nigeria today with that of May 29th this year. Subsidy removal might not be the only factor, but that's major factor. |

IbeOkehie: To bring back fuel subsidy will be a TERRIBLE MISTAKE. The government should be making LAWS to scrap ALL subsidies and price controls and also selling off all public owned and /or controlled companies, especially those owned by the Federal Government....including bridges, airports, hospitals and universities and schools of every kind. If owning ANYTHING is allowed for government, let it be State and local governments.
Establish or complete a biometric register of ALL Nigerians.
Abolish the Land Use Act and revert all lands to the tribes and people.
Abolish all income tax, both corporate and individual. Implement a small VAT and fixed property SALE tax on assets such as cars and boats and land and quoted shares.
OR
Implement a small, slightly progressive and FLAT income tax with no exemptions or exceptions.
Basically make any income taxes small, no more than 10% TOTAL and inclusive of Federal, State and LGA.
FLOAT THE NAIRA immediately...anyone can sell their forex to whomsoever they wish at whatever price.
Seriously study and figure out a way to drastically reduce money supply. Either adopt the US DOLLAR or Bitcoin or set up an immutable formula for the CBN to follow in printing money. Any money printed will be divvied up and distributed directly and equally to ALL Nigerians. Or maybe Nigerians who wish should be entitled to borrow from the CBN at prevailing interest rate. Just something to stop inflationary expansion of money supply. It can be done.
Do all the above and Nigeria will become a prosperous middle income country within 12 years. Nigeria needs radically FREE MARKETS, nothing else can make the country productive and rich.
Good Luck to Nigeria.
