In 1996 or thereabouts, whilst still in Unilag, I visited a Jehovahs Witness who stayed in a neighborhood near the university.

He waa living in a room and parlour and his sitting room had all the latest consumer electronics equipments from Sony. I told him I liked but asked want he worried about thieves?

He said said "thieves?". Let them come and steal it. That is not where he is keeping his trust, that is faith is in Gods kingdom. Material possessions wasnt everything in life. I never forgot what he said.

I was to meet the fellow 6 years later in a bus. I reminded him about what he said. He pleaded I meet him whenever I'm free in his office at LSDPC.

When I visited him in his office, he told me he lost the job that gave him all those nice things. The bank he then worked failed. He had to despose the gadgets to survive.

He had been planning his wedding but upon losing his job, he urged his fiance that they should forget it. She refused and said they should still go ahead and that they'll manage.

They got married and life was challenging. They lived off selling herbal supplements and from acts of kindness from his Christian brothers.

He said he later got this job and things were much better for him now. He even owned a car.

I asked deep in my heart "what would have happened if he had put faith in material possessions that many consider do or die?"
