LagosPrince:Yorubas didn start Nollywood. You may argue that yorubas may have started private acting without the support of NTA, But the NOLLYWOOD and the nomenclature NOLLYwOOD as a niche and BRAND for Nigeria movie industries started more by the IGBOS. But raising this argument is mischevous because tracing the real history of the movie industry in Nigeria will lead you to a more national than tribal origin. What happens to "FOR BETTER FOR WORSE", "MIRROR IN THE SUN", "VILLAGE HEADMASTER" "NEW MASQUERADE", other movies from various NTV NTA branch stations and also their entries into NTA NIFEST etc contests from TV PLAY HOUSES 1 Like |

ElSudani: Let me burst your bubble Jaiyesinmi was produced by a British Fredrick Goode for theater viewing. Which has already disqualified it as indigenous. Still the title for the pioneers of Nollywood which we know is indigenous is still the igbos. You are talking about television station being non existent forgetting that by the 60s before the war we already had a TV station in Enugu. Dude stop trying to derail this topic with diversionary tactics. The truth is there the wholly indigenous nollywood started with igbos in the heraldingnof Living in Bondage. |

Yoruba started Nollywood and they own it by still being the best till date. Nowhere can you see a list of the best movies in Nigeria that Igbos will have even 20 out of 200 but you will see the one that Yorubas will pick 170 or more out of 200. They are the owners and pioneers of arts, movies etc in Nigeria. The Afrobeat created by the Yorubas is what what is making waves even abroad now. The problem with you Igbos is you are too emotional to accept that Yorubas are your benefactors, helpers and senior brother in achievements.. I don't want to use superior because it sounds demeaning. You are lucky that you have somebody..a people..that you are looking up to and trying to catch up with in Africa cohabiting with you in Nigeria. 3 Likes |

You asked the fundamental question: who dey drag am with Una? Another question: how does who started Nollywood or not improve the basis life of average Nigerian — especially that of her Yoruba kins(wo)men? The average Yoruba is Ndigbo-obsessed but Yoruba-survival blind. Divide this shithole & all these unnecessary fight will end. Babaken: |

GoodLife4live: There was no commercial VHS cassettes in 1978, so where was this movie you mentioned recorded? You guys need to take a chill pill, this constant supremacy battles are unnecessary. Nollywood, just like it's American counterpart Hollywood, means commercialization of film production and distribution. |

What is the argument now? Who started Nollywood and own it? The Nigerian Movie Industry was nicknamed Nollywood by a US movie analyst in line with Hollywood and Bollywood. Yorubas were the first to do acting, theatre plays, films, cinemas. etc. 20 years or more after,Igbos were the first to put the movie industry on video. Till date, streaming et al Yorubas are the best in the movie industry and they dominate the movie industry with award winning and best selling movies. Not removing the fact that Igbos too are doing good but not as good as the Yorubas. The answer is obvious. To be candid igbo developed it in early 2000 cos personally i watched igbo movies back then than yoruba movies. I knew d likes of Emeka ike, Jim, Saint obi ,Tom west and co.. I think d limiting factor dat hindered their progress was their inability to grow new set of stars nd build d platform for them. but yoruba took over at a point ,and those small actors they trained are more versatile, dynamic and prolific...see d likes of Odunlade, Kunle afolayan, Chatta, Femi adebayo,Gabriel afolayan and Lateef adedimeji.. I dont think igbo can really meet up with them again. Gone are d days of Jim iyke , Nnaji ,Mike,Aki pawpaw and co 1 Like |

It's only Liegerians that always ask: "Who started this or who started that?" In America, I have never seen or heard where Americans asked which race started Hollywood, from which, Nollywood derived its name. But leave it to Liegerians, they always major in the minor and minor in the major. However, since this question has come up, let's get to the root of it. Now, can somebody conduct a Google search and tell us who or what tribe started Nollywood? And the answer is.....! |

ElSudani:And who sited it there... And was it a yoruba tv station, where the staff all yoruba, it was a national asset of course. even if the first yoruba drama started there, were all the cast yoruba. Those days and now people dont care where you are from, as long as you are good at what you do, especially in the gift of life. Why are you so much attached to the destructive enslavement of ethnocentrism. I am not youruba, I am Igbo, but Rashidi Yekini is still my best Nigerian No 9, Fela is my Nigerian music legend, and I know majority of yoruba and hausa people adore JayJay as the best Nigerian football joggling midfielder, tu face is neither yoruba nor igbo, yet igbos and yorubas love his music, when super falcons played in the world cup, i looked up to oshuola a yoruba babe , to deliver us because he was the best attacker untill she lost form slightly. The earlier you all shun tribalism in our lives, the better for us. it is sickening how deep nigeians, especially nairalanders are entrapped in tribalism |
