Waoooo. Can't believe this post can get to page 20. I don't think we need all these unnecessary arguements. There are better things we still need to explore. With my little knowledge in history. In entertainment; yorubas are the pioneers while my Igbo brothers are modifiers. Pa Awolowo established the first TV station in the whole of West Africa known as WNTV in Ibadan. I'm not sure most of us are aware that the pioneer of Cable TV in Nigeria is a Northerner. And that was in 1991. Hubert Ogunde popularised Theater arts in Nigeria. The "first Nigerian home video" Oorun Moru. It was produced in 1982. And during this era I'm not sure there is any movie or artists from the eastern or northern part of Nigeria like Baba sale, Ogunde, ishow pepper, pa ogunmola etc. For some of us arguing about nollywood, movies have been produced before that word 'nollywood'. Living in bondage actually changed the movie industry in Nigeria due to its wide distribution. And that was the point Aisha actually mentioned that the yorubas didn't get it at some point. To my Igbo brothers like Igbokwe, Lagos prince et al arguing over commercialisation or popularity. This is the point you actually missed which I will explain below: Now we all agreed that Yorubas pioneer acting in Nigeria. But the igbos commercialised and popularised the movie industry in Nigeria through consistent production and distribution. This is what helped and what helped was 'English Language'. Igbos and sout South dominated the VHS era just as a poster mentioned the three eras of the movie industry in Nigeria. The pioneers who were yorubas were actually projecting the Yoruba cultures. They told our stories in yorubas even the whites who didn't understand our language then were entertained. The yorubas couldn't dominate the VHS era due to language barrier. And then yorubas and the few hausas in entertainment back then don't really do it to get rich but just because they have the passion for it. In summary , yorubas are the pioneers of the Nigeria movie industry right from the theatre era but the igbos popularise Nollywood in Nigeria and beyond. Even the first movie on Netflix was produced by an Igbo lady. And currently Yorubas are dominating the movie industry in this era of video streaming. 1 Like |

Re: Yorubas Started Nollywood, Own It —Aisha Lawal, Actress And Scriptwriter by Freethinker87: 12:36am On Aug 28, 2023 |
HBB1: Yes, but what you understand as cinemas today wasn't what cinemas were back in the 70s. Back then, cinemas were venues for watching stage plays and theatrical performances. I'm not saying that there were no motion pictures at the time but these films were typically owned and controlled by TV networks. Hollywood revolutionized this space and started broadcasting films on reels nationwide in cinemas. There have always been motion pictures like Charlie Chaplin's shows broadcasted on network TVs, however, these were not Hollywood movies. Hollywood's ingenuity lay in the commercialization of the movie industry, which gave rise to independent motion-picture studios across Hollywood, LA. They established a production and distribution network capable of global scalability. This same innovation is what led to the birth of Nollywood. Fortunately, the advent of VHS cassettes made the commercialization of production and distribution of Nigerian movies more accessible. |

Freethinker87: Sorry, this is not making sense. There is Theatre-- for plays. There is also Cinema-- for films. It has been so for at least a 100 years. It has also been so in Nigeria. You have mentioned TV networks owned Cinemas... Can you give examples? ...and you say Charlie Chaplin's films were not Hollywood movies? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Even though his films were in Cinemas? So what was it? Commercialization, commercialization that? What do you mean by commercialization? Wasn't Hollywood commercialized when they had films only in Cinemas Again I say, you are not making sense 1 Like |

akpumping7720: Oga the argument is that the commercial motion picture which we know as nollywood is pioneered by Yoruba which is a big lie. It was pioneered by igbos with Living in Bondage. Theater and stage plays were pioneered by Yorubas. 2 Likes 1 Share |

HBB1: Oga this is a stage play adaptation, it doesn't have to be set in a theater Also note this was not a commercial movie. So you people should stop twisting facts. I have asked countless times since these movies were produced as you claim in the 70s and 80s at the time when VHS cassettes were in vogue, how many copies were sold and who were the marketers? These are the questions none of you can answer. Also please stop confusing Yoruba movies shown on NTA channel 7 as commercial movies |

Irony1: You are not making any sense and I only feel sorry for you. So if Macbeth is made into Film, it is no longer a Movie? Or a film like the King's Horseman is not a movie because Wole Soyinka wrote it? How can this make sense to you? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 My Gawd! ...and why is it not a commercial movie ( or whatever that term means)? Was it done for free? Did people pay money to see it? 'Commercial movies?' 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Where did the guy come from? Again, how am I supposed to know how many copies a Nigerian film made in the 70s sold or who distributed it? How many copies did Fela's Songs sell? Or Oliver de Coque or Epo Akara? Who cares! 3 Likes |

HBB1: https://www.legit.ng/1190518-brief-history-nollywood.html You had no brain cells in the first place not to talk of losing them. The crux of the matter is that Nollywood is classed as commercial motion picture where people pay and buy rental copies to watch them. I have told you guys to present data on the number of copies sold for the Yoruba films you claim preceeded Living in Bondage and up till now you have no answer, you want to play smart man when you have no brain cells .. Freethinker87: lol I am beginning to get down to your understanding now. Either it is due to brain or pretense,I cannot really decipher. Let me remind you that it is not the day a baby is born that it begins to walk or even crawl. It takes stages. If you give birth to a child and train him up to when he begins to crawl. Your relative later takes him and trains him up to when he begins to walk and even does what adults can do.Does it mean that it is that relative that gave birth to him? No,of course not. It is you.You pioneered him. Not your relative but he helped in bringing him up. When movies started in Nigeria,it was only the Yorubas....maybe 20 million people...that were involved as Nigerians but later the Igbos joined in the 80s...maybe another 20 million people, making it 40 million. The meaning of this is that the commercial market of movies has expanded. Hausas later joined and the market became larger that it was before. It is now valued at around 6.4 billion dollars this 2023. It was not even up to 1 million dollar when the Yorubas started it then and a lot of Nigerians involved now we're not participating because it was new. The understanding is that Yorubas pioneered the movie industry in Nigeria.... Nollywood (it was a US movie analyst that gave our movie industry Nollywood just in tandem with Hollywood and Bollywood). They were making money according to the period. Igbos later joined by massively putting the movies on video cassettes thereby greatly enlarging the commercial power of the movie industry. Hausa later joined thereby making it the second highest movie industry in the world. All thanks to the number. The population of Nigeria...the 3 major tribes and our other hardworking minority tribes brought Nigeria movie industry to the level it is now and it is going to be better, larger and we will surely be the best in the world. |

Re: Yorubas Started Nollywood, Own It —Aisha Lawal, Actress And Scriptwriter by akpumping7720(m): 2:57pm On Aug 28, 2023 |
Irony1:Commercialisation didn't start with Living in Bondage. Get your facts right please. Movies have been produced and sold on VHS before Living in Bondage. The first movie produced on video in Nigeria was Soso Meji by Ade Ajiboye. But below is an excerpt from the internet: "Living in Bondage was released in 1992 and is credited as revolutionizing the distribution model of Nigerian films." Movies have been produced and sold in Nigeria before Living in Bondage. But living in bondage birthed the distribution model of Nigerian films. |
