What Yorubas must know is that Lagos State is fully a Yoruba State and ONLY Yorubas should pilot the affairs of the State.

Since capital moved from Lagos to Abuja, the Northerners have stayed neutral in Lagos Politics, you don't see them ganging up with useless governorship aspirants against Yorubas like the Igbos have been doing till date (this must stop).
Yorubas in Anambra, Abia, Enugu don't go about ganging up against the Igbos to unseat their governors in those states so why are Igbos meddling in Yoruba affairs and politics?

Not exactly correct. Here are the two errors.

1) President Babangida left Dodan Barracks before the coupists gained complete control of the complex. If Lagos had been a STATE before that, and had been the CAPITAL all the while,, then the Constitution must be adjusted to make Abuja A State on its own too., As well as the Seat of the Federal Government Power.

Ogbomoso Oyo state, not Kwara.

Rushed movement?

Some people say that President Babangida hurriedly moved the Federal Government to Abuja because of the very violent SAP Riot of 1989 and the 1990 Coup.

I lived near Dodan Barracks, so I didn't suffer the effects of the SAP Riot (the Ebony Magazine riot), but much of the rest of Lagos was on fire. Protesters actually crossed Independence Bridge, chased away the policemen at the checkpoint and were on their way to the NTA before soldiers at Bonny Camp stopped them.

I will never forget April 21st and 22nd 1990 for as long as I live. The explosions woke me up (some thought that it was exploding compressors from the fire at NEPA Building, but I knew that it was something else) and there were explosions and gunshots till late afternoon.


The other reason that people say that it was rushed is because there were many things that were not ready.

When they say that the Federal Government moved to Abuja, it was mainly and basically the President and Vice President that moved to Abuja. The Vice President's house was not even ready.

The Supreme Court and Chief Justice were still in Lagos, so they gave Vice President Aikhomu the Chief Justice's house to stay in.

Aikhomu, Diya, Akhigbe and Atiku Abubakar stayed in the vice president's house. It was during the dispute between Atiku and Obasanjo that Atiku was asked to leave the vice president's residence. He was told to move to Aguda House, but he chose to move to his personal house instead.

There was an attack on Dr Goodluck Jonathan's house in Bayelsa and the National Security Adviser advised President Obasanjo to move him to Akinola Aguda House (the presidential guest house). All vice presidents have lived there ever since.

The Supreme Court, Defence Headquarters and many ministries continued to operate in Lagos till the Abacha era. It was General Abacha that ordered all ministries and government agencies to move their headquarters to Abuja.

There is another event at the tail end of the second video.

After saying goodbye to President Babangida at the airport, Lagos State officials got on a chartered plane and flew to Abuja for the commissioning of Lagos House, Abuja. That is the liaison office and governor's lodge. The top of the building was designed like an Eyo Masquerade. The deputy governor supervised the project and Governor Rasaki praised her for her work.

Lagosians were very happy when the Federal Government moved to Abuja.

Firstly, people were thankful that they wouldn't have to deal with presidential motorcades any more. Marina and Broad Street where the central business district of Lagos when I was a kid. But many companies began moving from the Marina area to Ikoyi and Victoria Island around 1988. Victoria Island became the business district, but it was not designed for that, so there were traffic jams. Add presidential movement to the traffic jams and you had a recipe from hell.

President Babangida attended an event at the Nigerian Institute for International Affairs in 1990 and the short movement from Dodan Barracks to Kofo Abayomi Street brought the whole island to a standstill.

It got worse as President Babangida's bodyguards became more paranoid. Before the road closed only affected cars, but in the late 1980s they began preventing pedestrians from crossing the road after the road closed vehicle had passed.

Lagosians were happy to be rid of that problem.

Secondly there was the very violent coup in 1990. There was a time on that day that the explosion was so much, so loud that my house shook. Lagosians were happy that such things were no longer their problem.

I knew that something was wrong when I heard the announcement. I was watching the 7pm news and the NTA announced that General Sani Abacha was meeting with military commanders on Victoria Island. That was very strange to me. General Abacha met with military commanders all the time, it's never announced. I knew something was wrong, but didn't know what it was (I now believe that the NTA knew that a coup was in progress, but they couldn't say it).


We had rented lots of movies and we were watching movies (instead of the 9pm news) when my brother walked in and said that Shonekan had resigned. We thought that he was joking, but he seemed serious, so we turned off the VCR ad tuned to the NTA. Sure enough we saw Shonekan's resignation speech.

It was days later that I heard the details of the coup from soldiers.

Thank God you said you didn't if what you said is true. It's not the reason. He was referred to as military president because he didn't dissolve the national assembly, so it was somewhat like a quasi-democracy govt. We link the US to almost everything that happens in Africa that it becomes stale and tiring.

The National Assembly was dissolved after the 1983 coup and there was no National Assembly from 1983 till 1991.

There is no special reason why he has the title president. He said that it just happened on the day, he picked the title without any special reason. He is not the first military officer in the world to have the title president. There have been many military presidents.
