WWE RAW REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS Forgive Them Father Cody Rhodes opened the show but the opener really wasnât about him. He addressed why he saved Jey Uso last week and it came down to the fact he sees Jey making better decisions. And rejecting Judgment Day sits at the top of that list. Say their name and they shall appear. Thatâs when the segment truly started. Dom, Damian Priest, & Finn Balor surrounded Cody, who valiantly stood his ground like a good babyface. Then the intrigue: Jey joined his side, simply out of respect and to repay the favor. Then Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn joined to have their friendâs back. KO and Jey have beef, yeah, but Cody is still his man. And, as Jey said later, he and Sami are still tight, so theyâll always look out for each other. Judgment Day, noting the odds no longer in their favor, backed away. With a tag title match against KO & Sami coming later, Damian saw no need to venture into a losing situation and give their opponents any advantage. Smart, right? Well, yeah, but then came JD McDonagh showed up. With two chairs in hand no less. He passed one to Finn, and they went into battle, followed by Dom. The chairs did nothing as four men still beats three, even three men with plunder. Damian reluctantly joined the fray and then caught most of the heat. After the babyfaces cleared house, they surrounded Damian. Señor pesos en el banco knew the beat down facing him and he told them all to bring it. You know how that ended. And if you somehow donât understand how math works, then Damianâs reaction later to JD and the rest of Judgment Day spelled it out for you: Damian put the fear of God in everyone, including Finn. But therein lies the rub because without JD, Judgment Day donât retain their championships this week. As commentary pointed out, theyâre not champions at all without JD. Once Dom showed up during the tag match, followed by Jey, then Cody, it became clear that Judgment Day needs more hands. There are too many targets on their collective backs with seemingly no end in sight. JD keeps doing his best to earn Damianâs goodwill and at what point does Damian relent simply because of the odds? Mami seems against it, even from afar: But one wonders how long they can keep this up with all these enemies? B-Sides Massacre Otis. Bronson Reed. Do I really need to say anything else? Oh, Iâm told by someone that I have to. A bunch of meat slapping each other in a fun match between mastodons. Bronson continued his run through Alpha Academy in what one assumes primes him for an Intercontinental championship match down the line once Tommaso Ciampa handles his business. Ironically, Bronson got the W simply because he was quicker than the more agile Otis. But you donât care about any of that. You care about meaty men doing what they do best. Beef While I really liked the match between Tommaso and Ludwig Kaiser, I donât like that it happened. GUNTHER told Tommaso to go through his people for a match, which feels similar to what he did with Chad Gable not too long ago. And the way it ended, with Giovanni Vinci and Ludwig on different pages, which led to Giovanni getting his nose busted, and possible dissent between the two. The ref missed Ludwigâs pin attempt, and possible three-count, while checking on Giovanniâs nose. Ludwig, understandably frustrated, went possibly too far when he booted his partner out the ring and complained about his presence. Weâve done the whole âGUNTHER upset at IMPERIUMâS overall imcompetenceâ thing before and while Iâm glad Tommaso will eventually get his shotâhe told GUNTHER to sign the contractâI can do without GUNTHER berating his boys to get it together. Again. After the berating, GUNTHER told his crew that heâll handle Tommaso on his own since heâs the only one who handles his responsibilities. this feels like an IMPERIUM break-up tease, but I wonder whether GUNTHER just disbands the team or if a big betrayal happens. Giovanni & Ludwig canât let another adult who isnât their father talk to them like children, so if itâs me, I know what Iâm doing. Ego Natalya probably has too much and Tegan Nox needs a bit more. Tegan approached Becky Lynch backstage and The Man loved seeing her. But she didnât like the fact that Natalya accepted her challenge last week instead of Tegan. Especially since she saw Tegan waiting by the curtain ready to pounce. I like doing a little character development here with someone rarely, if ever, used on Raw. Especially in a division that needs more character motivation than âI want my opportunity,â a word and motivation used way too often on WWE television. Becky challenged Tegan to step up and take advantage of her spots rathe then deferring to veterans, like she did with Nattie last week. And right on cue, Tegan goes to Adam Pearce and asks for the NXT championship match against Becky if Becky survives Tiffany Stratton at No Mercy. Quick point of order: Isnât that Shawn Michaelsâ decision on who gets a shot at that belt? Did Adam just run roughshod over Shawnâs authority? Should Shawn tune up the band on AP?! I think so. Violence. But I digress. Nattie stepped in, asserted her ego and somehow believes she deserves a rematch against Becky even though she lost. That set up a Nattie vs. Tegan match with Becky doing guest commentary. What followed was a pretty short match. Shorter than I expected. Tegan got the W, much to her surprise, but I wanted more from the match given all that backstory and character work. Still Standing Another dope segment between Seth Rollins and a recorded Shinsuke Nakamura. You can see it so letâs skip to the main point: Last Man Standing championship match at Fastlane. Makes complete sense given the story and Sethâs weakness. I expect brutality, no Rhea Ripley. Also of note? Ricochet doing a backstage interview on crutches. He made it clearer than white crystal that he wants Shinsuke after Fastlane, regardless of the outcome. Let It All Hang Out Dirty Dom can go. He isnât wasting his time in NXT, and his match with Dragon Lee made that clear. Now, letâs also note that Dragon Lee is incredible. He shows and proves almost every Tuesday but he really shines with a strong heel dance partner. As of now, thereâs no stronger heel partner for him than Dom. They have the Rey Mysterio connection and juxtapose each other perfectly. Thatâs why this match rocked; a strong heel vs. a strong babyface. Watch it. Just watch it now. Actually, no, read this recap, then watch it. From a story standpoint, it only makes Dom stronger. He proved he can win without Mami around, and do so after gutting out a comeback. Claires Back Michael Cole interviewed Nia Jax, who came equipped with a new attitude and new music (I think). Sheâs still not like most girls, however, as she made mince meat of Zoey Stark. Zoey interrupted the interview and got in Niaâs face for what Nia did to her. The match ensued after everyone broke up the skirmish, and Nia pretty much controlled the whole thing. While itâs weird seeing Zoey in this position given that she just stepped away from Trish Stratus and formed a partnership with Shayna Baszler, but here we are. Nia got the W, which no doubt means sheâs Rheaâs next target whenever Mami comes home. Quiet Trip Drew McIntyre constantly telling Miz to shut up made me cackle. Miz hosted Drew on Miz TV and it got into a philosophical battle about, who else, Jey. Miz instigated the best he could while also sympathizing with Drewâs plight. Miz made good points: Drew has every reason to throw Jey to the wolves after all the pain the Right Hand Man dished Drewâs way during The Bloodlineâs reign of terror. New Day hit the scene and Drew questioned how they of all people can greet Jey with open arms. Acknowledging their history with The Bloodline, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods simply said that itâs time to forgive and forget. Jeyâs on Raw with atonement on his mind; give him a shot rather than holding the past against him. Both sides made great points before Drew and Kofi locked up, and it gets at the heart of this whole thing with Jey: Is he truly a changed man or is this an act? And even if a leopard did change his spots, does that mean all is well? Bygones be bygones, that sort of thing? Of course, this dances around the fact that we got a match between two former WWE champs! Thatâs a big deal and the match delivered on that understated promise. Drew controlled most of it, illustrating his rediscovered anger and aggression. Kofi wrestled from under and got a few hope spots, even an SOS, but Drew seems motivated for a match with Jey. And heâs letting his rage push him through everyone until he gets to the younger Uso. Ivar, he of Viking Raiders fame, showed up and manhandled Xavier. That abuse distracted Kofi, obviously, and Drew took advantage. And when Ivar set his sights on Kofi, Drew, once again, walked away. Whole lot of Christopher Nolanâs Batman happening in Drewâs life right now: âI wonât kill you. But I donât have to save you.â Really enjoyed this weekâs Raw. We got several fantastic matches and the stories went in fun directions. This felt like setup for Fastlane and possibly Survivor Series. Two birds with one very big stone. WWE SMACKDOWN REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS The Bloodline, despite Roman Reigns not being around for some time now, are still dominating the Friday Night SmackDown airwaves. They opened this weekâs show in Sacramento, California to call attention to the fact that they kicked the crap out of John Cena last week. Then, of course, a video to remind us of how it came to be that Cenaâs tag team partner, AJ Styles, was taken out of the picture in an injury angle. Cena, then, was left to sign the contract alone and WWE has been promoting a 2-on-1 Handicap match. While Jimmy Uso was cutting a promo on Cena, who they claimed was not there, calling him scared, a surprise â Karl Anderson attacked from behind, sending both Jimmy and Solo Sikoa packing. Now that Styles has been taken out, The Bloodline is O.C. business and heâs here to take care of it. Naturally, Paul Heyman talked to Solo, who then talked to Jimmy in response to it â âyou better handle this before I handle this.â âI got you.â Naturally, a match ensued. And, of course, Jimmy won that match in relatively short order, effectively dealing with what turned out to be a minor speed bump. Still, itâs good to see they did it if only for storyline continuity. Anderson needed to do something after last week, even if it meant getting destroyed like his stablemate. And thereâs story to go back to once Styles returns. Michin, by the way, slapped the taste out of Jimmyâs mouth for what they did to Anderson, and it set Jimmy on the warpath backstage. He took out employees and then Ashante Adonis got caught up in it too. To circle it back around to the main story, Jimmy claimed this was taking out any potential partners John Cena may recruit. That led to Cena finally showing up for the main event segment. He promised if he could find no partner, he would go it alone. The Bloodline hit the scene to make clear they took everybody out and no one would be crazy enough to team with him. Then, they played out the scene exactly the same as last week, right down to Cena getting the upper hand initially but losing it when he lifted Sikoa up for the AA and got superkicked by Jimmy. Only this time he had some backup. And that led us right on into⊠Your LA Knight segment of the week: YEAH The pop was thunderous, he looked every bit like The Megastar headed for the ring and clearing house, and even though I knew it was coming it felt like a really big deal to see him sign on the dotted line to be John Cenaâs partner for this match. Itâs really happening, folks. I need LA Knight vs. Roman Reigns sooner rather than later after this. But thisâll do. Santos Escobar cut a great babyface promo early in the evening during an interview with Cathy Kelley, speaking openly about never giving up on his dream to win a title in WWE and not being willing to give that up because Rey Mysterio, his friend and mentor, is champion. âMay the best man win.â Later, Mysterio got his own chance to speak and he made clear he has nothing but love and respect for Escobar, knowing how hard heâs worked. That said, he expects the best from his opponents and so he gives his best. âIâm giving you the fight of your life.â When it came time for the match they were both getting cheers during introductions. Escobar did get booed just a bit during the match but they ended up getting the crowd right back by the sheer force of the great back-and-forth they put together. Mysterio got a bit dinged up during a crossbody at one point but they told a good story otherwise, namely that they know each other well and were prepared for all the big shots the other could deliver. Thatâs how Mysterio emerged victorious too, countering Escobarâs finish with a rollup that got the three count. It leaves the door open for another match down the road while putting the champion over and keeping the challenger fairly strong. This was really well done all around. All the rest -Bobby Lashley was a guest on âThe Grayson Waller Effectâ and made it sound as though he was already breaking away from The Street Profits for the fact that they didnât have the killer instinct heâs looking for, costing them a match last week. They attempted to protest and he told them simply to prove they want this the way he does. Later, Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins decided to prove themselves by attacking Mysterio and Escobar just after their match. This pleased Lashley enough to realign with the duo, and they collectively took out the LWO when the rest of the crew hit the scene to back up their boys. This led to a challenge for a match between the two groups at Fastlane. -Cameron Grimes got back on television this week, as fodder for Austin Theory to get a TV victory with Waller in his corner backing him up. They also shot an angle where Dragon Lee, who is set to act as a special guest referee at No Mercy, was ringside and got into a shoving match with Theory. -Jade Cargill was called one of the biggest signings for WWE in years on this show. âThere is a storm coming for the women in WWE and trust me when I say, Jade Cargill is a game changer,â as Corey Graves said it. This, and how Cody Rhodes has been treated, has to have some wrestlers in AEW considering how they may be treated if they jump ship when their contracts are up. -Charlotte Flair called out Bayley for becoming a stepping stone and being happy to sit on the sidelines while Iyo Sky is champion. She promised to win their match and challenge Sky for her title at Fastlane. Sure enough, she beat Bayley clean via pinfall. After, Damage CTRL made like they were going to take Flair out collectively but Asuka made the save. She apparently asked for a triple threat match, and Bayley instantly accepted. Then, Iyo said she didnât say that and seemed upset. Yet and still, issues with Bayley and Sky that never seem to go anywhere. Weâll see if that changes after this. The usual from the blue brand. WWE NXT NO MERCY REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS The Bomb I thought about just writing an expletive for this section. And I donât think anyone who saw Carmelo Hayes vs. Ilja Dragunov would begrudge me that honor. Yes, Ilja and Melo amazed and astounded. They topped their Great American Bash match by several leaps and bounds. But I thought of a few scribbles that convey why this match worked for me. I wondered if this was Meloâs story or Iljaâs. Now, in every match, at least if done well, the winner and loser have a story to tell. Sometimes itâs about the heel achieving their goal while the face sees another mountain in front of them. This match, however, set the stakes early: Itâs either about Melo regaining his confidence or Ilja finishing his business. When the match started, it looked like the former. Ilja came out the gate blazing and Melo looked lost and out of sorts. Ilja coming the that hard and staying on top of him only kept that confidence down. They told a nice story early with Melo getting dragged down and rebuilding himself over time. Booker T said something insightful: Meloâs technique and skill wonât help all the time; eventually, you have to fight. Ilja fought Melo and although it took a while, Melo eventually fought back. Thatâs when everything changed and even the match perspective changed. Rather than focusing on Melo getting his groove back, it transitioned to Iljaâs perseverance. Both men dished out their best, with Ilja dropping two H-Bombs, including one from on high. But Melo kept coming. Then it happened. the thing that Ilja asked during the contract signing: What happens to Melo when he shoots but misses? Melo went for the Nothinâ But Net. And he missed. Ilja surprised Melo with a clothesline counter. Ilja went to the top rope and hit another H-Bomb from up top, and got the W. I didnât see the titles changing hands right now and I canât say Iâm for it right now. Obviously, that depends on the future, but in the moment, this match rocked. Just an incredible showing from both men. Ordinarily, this means Melo moves to the main roster but thereâs obviously business here with Trick Melo Gang, and an eventual rematch with Ilja. Do those two things intertwine? Me think so. Watch the match. Watch it now and watch it repeatedly. B-Sides Party For Your Right to Fight I saw barbed wire bats. I saw broken Barbie dolls. I saw chains. And a fire extinguisher. Oh, and tons of chairs. Like, a lot of chairs. Becky Lynch vs. Tiffany Stratton Part Deux had it all. Fun, violent match with big spots and showed, once again, that Tiffany can hang with the big dogs. Becky wonâduhâand set her eyes on Tegan Nox sitting ringside but clap for Tiffany here. Stoned Is the Way of the Walk I loved the way this match started. Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker brawled so much on the recent NXT episode that they tore the house down. Literally. It makes complete sense that two men who fought that hard continued that fight the minute they locked eyes. It seemingly took 10 minutes before they got in the ring and the bell actually went ding. Even from that point, the war continued. If the higher ups at WWE want more proof Bron is ready for the main roster, this hopefully provides them everything they need. Less about holds and moves and more about just providing a believable fight with one of WWEâs veteran hands. I like the finish too. Mostly because I didnât see it coming. And when it happened, it felt so obvious. Bron looked ready for another W but Mr. Stone showed up out of nowhere. Stone leapt off the top rope, fully aware what might happen, and sacrificed his body for a bigger purpose. Bron caught him, because of course, and launched him outside the ring. That momentary distraction gave Baron the opening for an End of Days and a big victory. The finish gives Bron an out, Baron gets the winâVic Joseph using the burn the boats metaphor and calling Bron the biggest boat Baronâs burnt sounded weirdâand we set up a grudge match between Von Wagner and Bron. While Iâm not particularly interested in that, I recognize the Performance Center crowd will go insane for Von when he returns. Family I fell for it. I bought Tony DâAngeloâs injury and really worried about the guy. Stacks played the victim for a while as Out the Mud & Los Lotharios smartly took advantage. But then Tony came back with the Steve Austin knee brace. They really got me. And it worked because of Tonyâs real past with leg injuries. The match went to another level when Tony returned, as the Family and the Creeds teed off on the bad guys. Despite taking the pin, Out the Mud looked good. Not quite as good as their opponents, but they showed promise. I didnât expect Lucien Price to take the pin since theyâre so new. But perhaps that newness makes the loss easily forgettable. I donât know if Fatal 4 Way, which provided several chaotic moments, needed the extra story there with Tonyâs injury. I didnât dislike it, obviously, but I donât know that it added anything to a match that practically sells itself. American Dreaminâ Trick Williams is your new North American champion. I really donât need to say anything more than that. I will, but I donât need to. Several ref spots, which seem reasonable given Dom Mysterio and Dragon Leeâs beef. Dom accidentally superkicked Dragon. And yes, it was an accident. Then Dom took out the replacement ref too! That one looked purposeful. Dom truly wanted either a DQ or planned on stretching the match out enough where Trick showed frustration and lost focus. The irony is that Domâs shenanigans precipitated his downfall. With the ref out of the way, Dom grabbed his belt and went for Trick. But Trickâs knee collided with that belt and Domâs face. 1-2-3. But eventually, Trick got the W. Not a five-star match by any means but a solid affair that took care of a lot of business. Dom and Dragon are set for another battle in their war, while Trick gets his first title. That means more matches for Trick Willy, and thatâs a good thing. 100 Rounds Unsurprisingly, Butch and Noam Dar not only put on a dope match but went the distance. We got the full six rounds here with Noam getting the win 2-1. But thatâs not the story. As the clock counted down in round six, Gallus interfered. They took out Butchâs insurance policy in Tyler Bate, then Joe Coffey finished off Butch and helped Noam get the W. Gallus vs. the Brawlinâ Brutes sometime soon? Yes please. The vignettes alone make it all worth it. Scary Sight I predicted Gigi Dolin interfering in Kelani Jordan vs. Blair Davenport. That part I got right. But I expected that interference during the match, not after. Kelani got a good showing. They gave her enough offense and helped her not look overrun, but exhibited her inexperience against someone like Blair. Itâs a good showcase before the Womenâs Breakout tourney, which probably bodes well for Kelaniâs immediate future. Gigi, however, clearly has Blair on her mind. We finally get their match on the next NXT episode! Very fun night with solid and fun matches, with the best coming towards the end. We got a show with something for everyone that advanced stories and set up others. But those last two matches really put everything on a different level. They clearly showed why both matches earned those spots. Grade: A 1 Like 1 Share |
