Guy Ritchie鈥檚 The Covenant : 9/10

SPOILERRRRRRRR ALERT

This movie was worth the wait. I remember seeing the trailer around March/April, I knew I would love it. I have been waiting for it, to come on streaming platforms for months and prime finally answered my prayers馃ゲ.

I have not been this emotional about an action movie since hacksaw ridge, the actors truly embodied the characters, each fight scene had me close to tears and when Ahmed fought to save John鈥檚 life , I was bawling馃槶馃槶馃槶.

The only reason I鈥檓 not giving this a 10, is because I want moreee, I wish it didn鈥檛 end.

That being said, Jake Gyllenhaal has the most beautiful eyes I鈥檝e ever seen 馃グ.

Maan..The $1m most likely went to the color grading and ser猫nr猫n cinematography 馃槃, "Brotherhood" was marginally better than this, but even that also suffered from the same fundamental flaw of repeated or haphazard script writing. Brotherhood followed the tout/agbero/omonil猫 template, you wouldn't believe what happened next!, The same filmmaker took the same exact template and basically repeated it a mere few months later, and here is where it gets annoying, she sold the rights to the same streaming platform, and this time called it "Gangs of Lagos" 馃槱, and that's not even the kicker, she went further to use the same lead, "Tobi Bakre" in both 馃槱. I basically can't tell these movies apart. My friend that is a sound engineer worked on the score of both, told me that the "Gangs of Lagos" project, was the easiest money he has made, he basically just tweaked the score from "Brotherhood" a little and pasted it in "Gangs of Lagos and called it a day 馃槱. Imagine my "shock" Africa Magic announced a new IP show weeks back, and named it "Slum King", no prizes for guessing that it is still the Agber贸/Omonil猫 template 馃槃 and you wouldn't believe who is still the lead in this, our very own Tobi Bakre again 馃槶. Them wan use this template wound us, 馃槱馃槱. So you see, the industry here have a serious problem with originality and proper scripting. It is so sad that Nigeria actually has a rich history of literary work work just waiting to be adapted into movies and these filmmakers aren't ready to pay to get these rights, at least when Hollywood writers hit a scripting mental block issue, they turned to this option. I'm still waiting for a proper adaptation of the classic, "The Last days at Forcados high" 馃槱馃槱.

.

Maan..You called this right, but we live in a society were if you hate mediocrity, it will seem as if you are doing the wrong thing. In Uni, I can't even lie, i didn't use to bother with new gen 9ja songs because of how sub-par they were but they took the criticism personal, rebranded Afro-beat, and now like 50% of my daily songs driver is Afro beat, and basically the whole world is vibing to our sound now. But the movie industry is the direct opposite, it is like a cult, you are the opps if you criticize.

Maan...You called this rightly again. I knew there was something totally off about his portrayal of the role, man was basically fighting for his life in it,馃槱..The RMD i know is not the "Action guy", in his younger days, he was a lover boy type cast, then as he grew older, he became a sugar daddy/ family man type cast, he can also pull off an "Egbon" role that wouldn't require all the stunts he was desperately trying to do in this, You see as Sam Dede was comfortable in his role, because that's what he is used to. RMD, i am afraid doesn't have that range, and the casting crew are actually mad.

.

lol. Yeah.,The writing was a big big problem no proper flow, no proper character design, everything was just happening haphazardly with near zero coordination. If they had sticked a proper script, they might have be on to something special with the very fine production set they had, shame it all seems like a waste as the flick has a near zero replay value.

They seriously do need to buckle up and the Korean project should be their inspiration. Some 15 years ago, The Koreans were not even at the level they are now, but they did serious work and they now they are churning out top shelf shows and movies almost on a weekly basis and having major streaming platforms jostling for rights to these Korean content.

Nollywood has come so far to still be at this level and i seriously do hope they improve because for some reason i am in a love/hate relationship with them grin so i am rooting for the industry to succeed, if for anything, i have people in the industry that get thier daily bread from it, and it would do them a whole lot of good to their pockets 馃槃 and thier career trajectory if the Industry goes to the very top by making quality media that the whole world would want to see.
i hear people say old nollywood was the best. Compared to the stuffs they produced these days. Took a look at african magic and ROK, I realized 90 percent of films are made in asaba with generic plots and settings. From village drama to royal drama. The goofs in asaba are glaring. I saw one asaba flick. The woman was heavily pregnant. The next i saw was nine months later. Meanwhile, The other ten percent near quality films are directed by Gabriel Afolayan and kemi adetiba beside internet based B movies and miniseries by contemporary directors

The Departed 2006....8/10

A Hollywood remake of a 2002 Hong Kong movie called "Internal Affairs"

Anyway, my score would have been higher but I'm not a fan of the ending.
While I know that many people had issues with the message of the last scene of the rat running on the window...that is not my issue with it....

My main issues with the ending is the choices characters made. All starting from William.

Both characters have been shown throughout to be really smart...yet at the end they were making s卯lly decisions that didn't make any sense at all.

All William needed was his identity and some money. The moment he saw that envelope, he had enough view of it to know what was written, he shouldn't even have touched it or acted like he saw it...

Get back your identity and money first, then make some insurance before you leave. It's that simple. Even if he wanted to report he could have, but instead he simply just left the office...

That's d没mb af...

The other spy Castello had had 0 reason to give himself away...
What did he think was gonna happen?

He was free...no one knew who he was...he knew who the spy was instead...
All he had to do wait things out...walk away free

Even if he suspected Castello might have a back up plan the worst move ever is to give himself away to a spy trying to cover his tracks...
That's childishly st没pid...

For a movie so we'll written until the last 20 minutes, it's such a shame what the writers did...it wasn't even that hard to end the movie well imo

Edited:
Another inconsistency I noticed is why did Castello even need a rat in the first place?

He was literally an FBI informant and had the protection of the FBI. Why then did he need a spy in the state police?

That makes no sense imo...
Why also go on the run when he was raided? He knew he could be shot...
A better choice would be for him to be arrested, FBI takes over and set him free...

The real difference with Infernal Affairs is it didn't end with just one movie as The Departed did; it was actually a trilogy of films. However, another difference is that, in Infernal Affairs, Lau's crooked cop was never discovered or killed. Also, the sequels were actually prequels to show what happened before the first movie.

According to Scorcese, it鈥檚 ridiculous on purpose. The Departed ending is bloody and grim, but overall, it is farcical. Every character is either angry, crying, or laughing with not much in between; emotions run wild and everyone has a hair trigger. The film moves lightning-fast, and the rapid-fire ending scenes offer a twist every time a location changes.

Also, Colin finishes off the killings by shooting Barrigan so that there are no loose ends. Even though Barrigan and Colin are ostensibly on the same side, Colin is loyal to no one but himself and doesn't trust anyone to help him; killing the one remaining person who knows his identity is his safest option.
