I talk to many women who don't understand what brought their relationships to the point where they need therapy. After all, they 'never argue with their husbands'. Well, of course it sends up a huge, waving red flag. If you NEVER disagree, you're probably not being honest, or worse, you're not saying anything.

Relational silence. It's annoying for you and your partner, because usually when you reach a point of silence - or closure - and you just don't want to engage with your partner in any meaningful communicative way...you have a big problem and it could be headed for a breakup or separation.

How do I know we are silent?
You know your relationship is suffering from silence when you haven't debated anything with your partner in the past few months—in fact, you haven't had an interesting conversation about anything that matters to either of you in the past few months. months or weeks. You have disconnected. And either you or he initiated the silence in an effort to stop having to deal with judgments, criticism, and other negative conversation killers.

Why is it such a poison?
When there is a healthy debate or even a heated argument in a relationship, it means that both people are trying to make their voices heard. They are trying to get their points across. They try to convince their partners of something or to convince themselves. However you divide it - opinions are on the table and you both know where the other stands. With silence, no one knows where the other stands. There is a lot of arguing and assuming because no one is heard. And we all know where that can lead.

what can i do about it
Relational silence is easily treated. Just start talking. The biggest hurdle is for someone to take the first step. The second is to begin to understand why the two of you closed. What was your last big fight? And what was said? And if the silence has gone beyond the point where anyone has taken the first leap of faith – you may need an impartial person like a mediator, religious leader or therapist to help you through this.

Quick Tip: If you're afraid to talk to your partner because of what their reaction might be - ask yourself "what am I afraid of?" What would be the worst case scenario if I asked to be interviewed? Do I trust my partner not to judge me, berate me, or leave me when I speak up?

I'm usually silent when I'm angry... I can't shout and if I attempt to speak when I'm angry, I'm gonna say harsh things that I might end up regretting.

U should learn to be angry with someone's action rather than with the person. Especially when you are building a relationship.

Two has become one.

It's like wanting to cut off your own leg becos it's in pains. U wdnt do that to your own leg, would you?

So why hurting someone cos he offended you, and you claim to want to be whole with the person?

I for one, I speak out but very calmly and respectfully.
And even when I'm forced to say the hurtful-truths, I still say them politely.

I tend to want you to be convinced you represent all i feel of you. Like if I feel my partner is silly or stupid.

I must find a way to convince her politely that "she is silly or stupid".

The worst thing you can do to anyone is silence, totally ignoring the person, Omo you fit cry if someone that matters to you ignores you and yeah i understand. I only talk when i'm comfortable around you.
It is bad to ignore people but it's nice to do when you angry and trust me when you ignore someone to a certain level, the person would run away because he or she don't know what you planning. I fear silent people more, most of them are mean.

The right word you were looking for is silent people are calculating and deep it has nothing to do with being mean cos even happy good talkative people can be mean

For a guy that's a very girly and bitchy thing to do.
Meaning "you would be CARRYING FACE".
Or expelling NEGATIVE ENERGY to your surrounding.

As a man, you should only put up the angry face for the very day/moment the issue occurred.

Doesn't mean you should force smiles. But address other matters that a necessary without bitchy-attitude or carried-over aggressions.

Am naturally I silent guy I don't know how to stay long in a conversation. The things I say though are not just for conversation sake I say things needed to be said and once I've driven home my points that's the end of the conversation.i hate beating around the bush,I hate fabricating tales although I like listening to fabricated tales to while away time So conclusively my partner has to talkative,I mean very talkative if we have to be together.
That's the way it should be. A man should be a man of few words. Only talk when it's necessary and your partner will come to understand that you're not a parrot.

Most silent people are cowards and gossips.
Cos those things they don't tell you, would be told by them to third and forth-parties.

Better believe this and know peace.

They are gossips and backstabbers.

They always want to wait for the perfect climax of the issue to express themselves.
When they don't eventually get that climax, they deliberately create the climax.

Some men actually think being More-mean brings them more respect and fear from their partners&friends.

It's just really silly and eventually self-deceiving.

I'm talking from high experience of being at the receiving end in few occasions.

Hope you realize that the topic here is saying "silence"(not talking at all) ?

It's okay to talk in few words rather than complete silence.

Whenever I decide to keep total silence, the woman should just know I already on my secrete way out of the relationship, which wouldn't take more that 1 or 2 weeks of GOODBYE-SEX-SOUVENIR.

I guess you are not good at listening to people, how will they express themselves to others but not you?

Quiet People are not Silent to begin with, quiet people express their opinions it’s just that you are not listening to them. When you are not being listen to what do you do, you go silent till when they are ready to listen to you!

Anyone can easily do these things you say here to a passerby or someone you are not building a future with.

If someone unknown slaps me from a moving bus, I doubt I would think beyond that very day about the incident.

But if it's someone you are sharing a future with, a family with, money with, love with, I doubt your proffer solution of "carry your wahala go", albeit in silence would be your reaction.

Yes, they would express themselves to others rather than you that upset them.
Cos they are too angry to even discuss with the very person that upset them. That usually happens alot.

The TOPIC emphasizes on SILENCE, SILENT PEOPLE. Not on QUIET-PEOPLE.

It talks about complete DELIBERATE SILENCE.

Anything that will make me to start being silent in a relationship, just know the end of such relationship is near.
If my partner offends me, I will let her know about it, unless I'm very busy at that moment, I will reduce the communication, until I must called her attention to the issue.

I understand you.ppl are bad you will deliberately hurt someone and be expecting them to come and be settling issues.I just leave you to your conscience that if u have any. Most of the time people who hurt me they come back and apologize without me even complaining.

You are still extrapolating and digressing from the TOPIC.

This topic specifically reffers to people/someone you are in a RELATIONSHIP with.

Not some random persons that would be passing-by, hurt you and come back to apologize.

Would you be okay to allow your wife insult you in public, go by and later come back to apologize to you?

The answer would be "where is she GOING-BY-TO"? or "COMING-BACK-TO"?

When you both stay in the same house and take care of the same home, workers and children?

Its a different ballgame when there is RELATIONSHIP involved

And you are still not adhering to the Topic.

A very great and insightful write-up... This week is going to be great 😃.

Lol ... I'm guilty of this though, keeping quiet. I don't like confrontations or repetition, I'm an advocate for good communication but when it yields nothing I keep quiet and the truth is for every moment I keep quiet when I ought to speak or point out something I lose interest.

I'm definitely going to work on this. grin

Why do you sound like my gf. Because this is what we just finished fighting over and this is what she said. Are you my gf?
