Aha! I see the confusion. To clarify, osmosis is from lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration, which is the same as higher solvent concentration to lower solvent concentration.

Case closed cool

ositadima1:

My brother I would have given up on this, but I don't give when I am right. Below is a passage from a book, do with it what you like, iam done:

Osmosis is a process by which solvent molecules move from an area of high solvet concentration to an area of low solvent concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. Semi-permeable membranes allow solvent molecules to pass through but not solute molecules. The rate of osmosis is proportional to the difference in solvent concentration between the two areas.

I hope this explanation was helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

You are bringing in Physics and law of gravity into it. That doesn't apply here. There is what is called osmotic pressure and it is the force which helps move water across the membrane. Osmosis is strictly about the movement of water molecules and not the movement of any other substance.

In all instances of osmosis, there are two solutions separated by a semi-permeable membrane which permits only water to move across it. Now, when those two solutions of different concentrations are connected with that semi permeable membrane, osmotic pressure is immediately set up with the goal of equalizing the two different concentrations. This makes water molecules to start moving away from the hypotonic solution (i.e the side of lower concentration) through the membrane to go and dilute the hypertonic solution (i.e. the side of higher concentration) at the opposite end and in the end both solutions become isotonic (i.e. of equal concentrations)

True, osmotic pressure na the force wey dey make water waka across membrane. But the way you talk about am get small issue.

You talk say, "Osmosis na strictly about how water dey move, e no consign any other substance." This one no too correct. Osmosis fit involve other small substances wey dey waka with the water, no be only water waka come.

Again, you yarn say, "Na so water molecules go begin waka commot from the side wey get lower concentration through the membrane, waka go mix with the side wey get higher concentration for the other end." Small issue dey here. Water dey waka from the side wey get higher concentration go the side wey get lower concentration, not the other way around.

Make we try get am well.

You agree that it is the solvent that crosses the membrane and not the solute. This reinforces what I have been saying. grin

Will need to read up on osmosis to refresh its exact meaning as it is more under biology i guess.
But looking at hygroscopic or capillary forces. They cause water to flow against gravity. They are due to net imbalances in other forces at the atomic level. And there are so many forces at the atomic level which physicists say are far greater in value than the gravitational one we see and can easily relate with. That's why a nuclear bomb is possible. Where massive amount of energy (force x distance) is released by a change from one atom to another under the right conditions that are possible.

UACN. Buy more, Hold on, or Sell off?

This is a long term approach, I am responding because i was mentioned. Same approach as Flour mill, i'm holding current unit, If i am just opening positions today as a long term player , i will start with afolabi units, then buy more or not based on quarterly earnings report . The major risk of UACN is management figuring out how to turn around the agro-allied sector of the company. The recent earning shows boost in profitability which is due to a large extent inflow from disposed property, plant, etc . will keep enjoying the tashere dividend and adding appropriately.

Disclaimer: for most positions (about 9 out every 10) of my / home office stock holding i don't have a price target. Hence, i usually don't talk about price two things takes me out of a position viz;
a. if the company's (stocks held) direction (mgt, financials) begin swerve away from the trajectory .
b. death on my part aka till death do us part (if the next person in line of command aka beneficiaries are wiser or dumber than i am as the case maybe decides to sell everything, I am long gone anyway... step-up basis to whoever takes over the office). I hope i there will be sme type of trust in place to mitigate this.

Cat fish is found in fresh water habit, If you take catfish and put it in a lagoon the catfish will die. The concentration of the catfish body fluid is lower than that of the lagoon. Water will move out of the catfish cells into the environment that is the lagoon, this will cause plasmolysis of the catfish cell and the death of the animal.

If you take a mackerel fish found in the ocean and put it into a fresh water habitat. The concentration of the fresh water habitat is lower than the concentration of the mackerel body fluid. Water will move from the environment ie the fresh water that has a lower concentration into the cells of the mackerel fish that has a higher concentration. The water movement into the animal will make its cells to become turgid, the cell membrane will burst leading to the death of the fish

I was surprised you did not do that practical described by Deadlytruth in your Biology classes in high school

"the presence of salt reduces water potential. Water potential is the measure of the free energy of water. It is affected by the concentration of solutes in the water. Salt is a solute, so when it is added to water, it lowers the water potential.

This is because salt ions attract water molecules. The more salt ions there are in the water, the more water molecules are attracted to them. This reduces the number of water molecules that are free to move around, which lowers the water potential."

Osmosis is a form of diffusion.

Diffusion is like an umbrella under which osmosis falls as a specialized form. Osmosis is always from higher concentration to lower concentration.

Like most processes in nature, things move from high energy states to lower energy states, or else you need external energy to go in the other direction. undecided

Nwokem mba o.... no be so

Water moves from areas of low concentration(high water potential) to high Concentration (low water potential)......

Trying to update and expand the above old post with Q2 and Q3 and more reserve numbers

For example UBA reads as follows

Random walk, fluctuations, probability, stochastic model and deterministic model in Physics can all be applied to the Stock market more than Osmosis. Yet they have wasted almost 2 pages trying to get the correct definition of Osmosis. Talk of derailment!

That is diffusion.

Osmosis is the movement from lower concentration through a semi permeable membrane to areas of higher concentration

Osmosis is the movement (of solute) from lower concentration (of water) through a semi permeable membrane to areas of higher concentration (of water)
and vice-versa(if i may add grin).

Fixed!!!

@ositadima1 u were kinda right in pointing it out at least..

started with solute, then inbetween, definition referred to "of water" and then "of water" at the end..
can be confusing for starters who would assume he was referring to solute from the onset till the end OR referring to solvent(water) from the onset to the end of definition.

Doesnt make his definition wrong though..

no more explanation tire things...😑😂😀🤣grin

Can there be anything like concentration of water?
I know that I could measure the concentration of salt in grams of that salt per dm³ of water, but how do you measure concentration of water? Would you say 2grams of water per dm³ of water?

It is the solvent that moves not the solute. It diffuses from an area of lower concentration solution (higher concentration of water) to an area of higher concentration solution(lower concentration of water) until both solutions are isotonic.

Higher concentration here means a higher solute concentration and lower concentration means inversely the same.

Osmosis can also be used to describe the movement of capital within a stock market from one sector to another. For example, if investors believe that the technology sector is undervalued relative to the energy sector, they may sell their energy stocks and buy technology stocks. This flow of capital from the energy sector to the technology sector would be an example of osmosis within a stock market.

Capital flows from Overvalued sectors to Undervalued sectors or stocks. wink

Seems that in the Nigerian Stock Exchange generally and on this thread, those who did sciences far outnumber those who studied commercial and financial courses.
I am wondering how come.
