Nigerians are yet to fully appreciate the implications of GlaxoSmithKline GSK exiting Nigeria. When I say this, I don’t mean no Agbado (they can’t afford it). I speak of those hardworking Nigerians whose incomes & livelihoods have diminished.

Exactly. I said this in a previous post. Once a company develops a drug it has a patent where only it can make that drug. These parents usually palsy 10 yrs and once the patent expires anyone can make the same drugs. All these drugs are out of patent and have cheaper generic alternatives….that’s the real reason they’ve exited Nigeria…they can’t compete with the generics and they don’t want to lower their prices in Nigeria because people will start sourcing these products in Nigeria. I will post a graphic I stumbled across this morning below to highlight the cost of insulin in different countries. Another good example is paracetamol. Every Dick and Harry pharmaceutical company in Nigeria produces paracetamol for a fraction of the cost of panadol. Only the well heeled in a country like Nigeria buy panadol which is simply a brand name for paracetamol. That’s why these companies are leaving.

Dont let these doommongers deceive you. Nigeria has problemst no doubt but that’s not the reason these pharmaceutical companies are leaving. The reason is Nigerian pharmaceutical companies like fidson, mopson are producing the same drugs for a lot less and there are cheap imports from India.

In summary gsk moved production to another country try cos production costs were high

They could have increased their sales cost by 100% but they chose the cowards way out ,let the importers increase their goods to x10 the former price,they don't care cos Nigerians will buy anyway

The trick is to understand how gsk appears to think,they know Nigerians will buy regardless of the price,so they export to us instead of adjusting sales cost

I think the country should quickly fund or mass import good alternatives and ban all gsk products in Nigeria,

Their sales from Nigeria is more than a lot of countries combined
