Nothing is going to happen. The fundamental problem with Nigeria's power sector isn't equipment, which is easy enough to buy abroad, but the structure of the market itself. Power distributors (DISCOs) aren't allowed to charge enough to recover their costs, which means they can't afford to pay the generators (GENCOs) for the power they are given to distribute. The end result is that neither the GENCOs nor the DISCOs have the money to do even minimal levels of maintenance.

As much as it may pain certain tribal warriors to hear, Fashola was right that the solution isn't rocket science. The problem is that the solution isn't what the masses want to hear - they need to pay what it costs to generate and distribute power, not what feels "fair" to them thanks to an inflated sense of entitlement stemming from the "oil boom" years of the 1970s when Gowon, Murtala and Obasanjo were dishing out "awuff" in the forms of subsidies of all kinds.

Sadly, Tinubu has been so spooked by the backlash from his attempt to cancel the oil subsidy that he clearly lacks the guts to take any major steps in this direction (how could he, when he doesn't even have the courage to let the CBN fight inflation with higher interest rates). All we can expect for the next 4 years is lots more meaningless agreements like this one, while the fundamental issues are left unaddressed.

Exactly.

This was basically one of the conclusions of an analysis done by PwC a few years ago.

The thing is, Nigerians love subsides. Attempt to remove them, you are an oppressor.

The people that abused you just now, they use GSM services which grew because the Obasanjo government refused to subsidise their services, enabling them to make enough of a profit to build the stuff.

So how much should disco charge?

You talk as if you are both an apc govt member and disco owner

Discos a private firm want to charge for poor service, when they are not making gain why are they reluctant to drop the service

Stop giving useless govt alibi

Govt that can't tackle security, free concurrent list manage simple infrastructure

So how did the PDP government give us the GSM services you are using to type this?

They allowed the GSM service providers to set their prices which in turn enabled them to give us better services thanks to the high profits they made.

By the way, most Nigerians back then did not like the way MTN and co were charging high prices.

The power sector has been hobbled with price setting by government. From 2017-19, Buhari even prevented them from raising prices

Meanwhile from 2017 to 19 cost of gas was rising. Cost of maintenance was rising. Yet power companies could not raise prices.

Even now they are not allowed to run at a profit.

Result, three of the discos are now run by the banks who loaned them money and one of them is run by government

Oga, if you are running a business and you are not allowed to set your prices, your business will fail. There would be massive corruption and looting. That is why we don't have light, because the government thinks that by setting prices for power, the sector would prosper. That's an oxymoron if there ever was one

Are you for real or you are one of their beneficiaries or Workers or what are you postulating by saying ' allowing the organisation to charge what they deemed' - so even to supply Pre- paid Metres,na problems?
- to get New Transformers,na problem! For over 15- yrs,Discos should show Nigerians - purchase of Equipments into Nigeria, for these are what they should have envisaged when they claimed to buy NEPA then!
- the present DISCOS in Nigeria are Fraudulent Entities- forcing and Collecting ,Nigerians Money on , Monthly basis- without Providing Services! They do this through Estimated Billings - and accumulated bills for Nigerians, which they eventually load- into the Prepaid Meters whenever Nigerians gets one.
• This is Stealing By Force( SBF).
So, what you are advocating is that Nigerians should be paying for Services not rendered!
Why did General Electric sidelines- when GEJ was creating the Establishment of DISCOS in Nigeria- so,where are the Experts Now in these DISCOS?
Corruption has finished these DISCOS!

Yes and all this is happening because the inept government is setting prices for them.

Reason am. If you bought yams at N1000 per tuber from farm and you want to sell them at N1700 to recover your cost of transporting them plus making a profit, and then Tinubu comes and tells you to sell your yam at 500 naira, the yam you bought from farmer at 1000 naira, how would you make your money back?

The price you are paying for power is heavily subsidised. The subsidy giverment pays the power sector cannot cover their resulting loss because the cost of gas, meters, maintenance, transformers, wires , etc is going up too. Then most of the stuff is made abroad.

The thing is, all the problems you mention, corruption included, have a root. Discos are not allowed to set their prices.

If government forced MTN and co to charge 1naira for an hour long call, and one naira for ten GB of data, would mtn and co give you any good service?

Think.

My biggest fear is that the national grid is filled with a lot of electricity thieves, people that are doing bypass and using AC and water heater without paying for it, this will never encourage serious investors to build massive power plants.

Lol, what about the one signed in 2019 to generate 11,000MW of electricity by 2023 with the same company?

We are already generating 12,000MW. The problem is transmission. Currently transmission is 4000mw. The agreement was/is not for generation, it was/I for transmission. Stop listening to Obi who doesn’t know what he is talking about. Power generation has been privatized, transmission still belongs to the government.

Partially true and false.

1. Nigeria does not supply Ghana electricity but we supply Ghana gas for its turbines.

2. Togo and Benin have a joint electrical grid, and they buy electricity from Ghana and Nigeria to meet its need. Benin was working on its own independent power plant sometime ago, not sure if they completed it or not.

3. Yes, Nigeria also supply electricity to Niger.

Yes, but they all have to charge market price first, not 'cheap' prices.

The point of all my argument is that power and petrol are businesses. Government has not been running them as businesses.

When you do price control in the name of helping the poor, and paying subsidy to cover the resultant loss, you drive away investment and cripple the industry. At the end, you get depleted production, corruption, inept management, and so forth...and the poor still don't get helped.

(I mean , if you starve a primary five pupil that was taking first before, him go still take first next time?)

Niger Republic has no fuel subsidy, they are selling fuel at N1000 and above per liter, and they have one working refinery. Yet until this coup they had, they were exporting fuel to three African nations . Nigeria included. Because when you run your industry at a profit, you become a master of the trade. When you run let the poor breathe polices., you get shitty industries.

It does not matter. They are poorer than us. By rights the government should subsidise fuel for them, but they won't. Because if they do that, the refinery would lose money, break down, and they would have to import...and again they are poorer than us, and do not even have up to half our forex earnings or even one quarter.

But why should govt not consider the poor, is that not why they are govt

Though it may not be price control and it may be

For me there's nothing wrong in subsidy

We have tried subsidy for 40 to 50 years. In that time we went from two working refinereis to four damaged and money losing refineries.

The same thing with power supply.

The things cost money. You can call me oppressor, apc supporter, tinubu supporter, but when you do price control and subsidy, the affected industry loses momey, corruption sets in, and production falls drastically.

The only countries that can do some form of subsidy are countries like Saudi that have ten times our revenue, and a small population of less than 50 million people....or countries like Russia that have a diversifed and industrial economy that can charge enough to pay for the subsidy.

Not Nigeria where the federal budget was 22 trillion. Meanwhile if we kept the subsidy as it was at the begining of the year, it would have eaten more than half of our budget. Last year we spent 10 trillion on subsidy. This year it was already 6 trillion by May, and NNPC was still owed 2 trillion naira.

At the end, we would have worsened our already bad deficit.

See the problem.

At the end, the poor suffer more. If subsidy worked...we would have been a rich nation. It has not obvuously. And it is sad the government still keeps it.

Lord knows, I wish we would have kept subsidy. But if we kept fuel at N65 per liter today, subsidy costs would be over N800 per liter up from N35 in 2011 December. The money would come from loans and other parts of the budget.

Amyway, in most people's mind, I am a tinubu supporter for seeing this. When I opposed Tinubu and Buhari in 2012 when they were doing that occupy Nigeria nonsense...because i woke up.

12000 Mw of Electricity Power supply to the Nation is still very low Power supply systems required in the Nation. Nigeria the 6th highest populated country in the world needs nothing less than 200 000Mw of Electricity Power supply. Brazil the 7th most populated country in the world is having above 185000Mw while Mexico the 10th highest populated country in the 🌎 world power supply to Mexico 🇲🇽 is above 150000Mw see Google.com.
So for Nigeria 🇳🇬 we need nothing less than 200 000Mw.
For what is going on, The government in power, and his 👋 Power supply system Minister should go into the way out for the country's need of above 200 000 Mw supply systems.
In power supply systems, what you generate, you should be able to transmit and what transmit you should be able to distribute unlike the going on systems in the country Nigeria today. 🇳🇬.
Like what the Minister is going about foreign power supply contracting systems is a good 👍 way of solving power systems situations in the country. The Minister should have special power
supply systems advisers. This is Wishing you a happy successful program 😊 in the country..

To Power Minister: Let There Be Lights:

And there was lights...

From our observations, you seems to be a Silent achiever,at least from the pictures of the Agreement with the Siemens!
But importantly, you need to move Faster,as Nigeria is behind Power/ Energy baseline- set by the World.
In particular, the DISCOS,the Gemco are not doing enough but has brought Frustrations to Nigerians because they are the real problems in Improving Lights! This has led many Nigerian Youths- to Japa to other Countries- where the Lights are Constant,Infrastructures are available and Jobs are Stable!

Well, Ghana has light more than us, and their people too also japa.

•Sir,the National Grid is a Fraudulent Entity- as some of us have been hearing this ' Nations Grid' since the Secondary School Days, and has not improved beyond 3-4000 mega, unless we are deceiving ourselves!

Simple. You are not paying the maket price for power to the DISCOS and GENCOS, because the poor have to breathe. That means no profit, and thus not enough money to fix the grid.

Meanwhile, the GSM companies were allowed to charge as they liked...and as a result they had the profit to build our internet and telephone network without government money whatever.

But no, poor have to breathe.

•As a Minister, can you guarantee Nigerians- when we would have 24/7 Lights?

When we start paying the actual cost of power, not the price set by government. Just as we do for GSM, and your foodstuff.

2• Are you aware that Fixing Power in Nigeria required you to be Mad - with this Imposedy- System ( from ECN- to NEPA- to Power Holding Company( PHCN) -DISCOS)-beyond what we are currently experiencing- lights Off and On,on daily and weekly basis?
At least, there is no single- day - for over 15- yrs, that lights is not Off and On -on -daily basis and I challenged these DISCOS to tell Nigerians, otherwise- except, the diversion to their boss houses or Areas to themselves! That is wicked and evil!

Simple. You are not paying the discos market price. Pay them market price, and they will give you 24/7 light...like they do in Ghana, and even in many sane countries....and like you do to use your phone.

3.Are you aware that - If this Power Issues is resolved ,then 50% of Nigeria Problems is done?.e g
•we don't need Generators- Importations to Nigeria to Power Nigeria- Ghana and Benin-Republic have done away with that since!
•Some Countries are staying permanently in the Space e g Americans, Chinese, now India have just gone to outer Space! - they can't do that without 24/7 Lights and 365- Days Constant Lights!
So,when do you think Nigeria will achieve this feat?

Simple. Pay the DISCOS the market price of power. Just as you demand full price for your business, let them do so...so that they can make a huge profit that can be used to fix things.

Am sure you were clapping when Buhari froze pwer prices for 2 years...meanwhile gas and other costs kept rising. Result...three discos went bankrupt. But hey...poor got to breath. cheesy

4. Are you aware that Power-is the SOUL of a Nation's Industrialization,so when do you think- our Nigeria-Industrialization will come?

Simple...pay the market cost for industrial goods, and pay the market cost for power. But the poor have to breathe... grin

5.Have you solved the Homongous Corruption in these DISCOS,as they inherited the NEPA- and no improvement since, but knows how to Collect Money- without providing equivalent Services?
What the present DISCOS are doing is - eyi je,eyi o je- like playing a loitery- with their Tramsfomers- as they refused to give New Transforers,No of Pre-paid Meters is limited to those that can pay extra- Money,Nigerians are still forced to pay Estimated Billings - despite the House Rules against this during Gbajabiamila House Speakership!

Simple. Once you bring in price controls...corruption results. Same thing happened with food in many former communist countries. Price controls led to scarcity, black market, and reduction in quantity.

Then many of those communist countries stopped price controls and subsidies. Today, Moscow supermarkets are groaning with food of all quality. 40 years ago the shelves were bare.

Same thing with power. You are restriciting the ability of people to make money...dem go just sit down...or they would engage in corruption.

Why no corruption like that in Nigeria's hotel sector, or food sector? Because...market price.

6.Can you as a Minister tell Nigerians - how many Average hours do these DISCOS give lights- both day and lights

Band A areas : 18-24 hours (also pay higher). Band B 12-18 HOURS. Band C 6-12 Hours Band D less than 6 hours.

7- Do you have the Numerical analysis of how many Transformers, including Dilapidated Assets Discos are having and how many Areas do their each Transformers covered- per the Population?

That's not how transformers work. You do transformer based on needs.

Besides, DISCOS cannot afford more transformers because....they are not allowed to make a profit because...they are not allowed to charge market price because...the poor have to breathe. grin
8 How many Foreign Experts- like this-Siemens,etc have you tried to bring- that can add large Numbers of Kw- grade to the Grid,to boost the lights?
e.g General Electric of USA and why are these Organisations not being involved ?

And how would you pay those people? They won't just come and build stuff for free.

(The USSR used to do such things, and it bankrupted them. Now everyone wants money up front)

And there isn't enough money because....the poor have to breathe. cheesy
9. Why can't States also generate their Lights- with Water Dams, Solar Energy Generation, etc?

Because the states are seeing how gencos struggle with getting enough cash from discos, and they know that a state run generating company would lose money drastically because discos won't pay them well enough because discos are charging low prices. If you were a state governor, you won't sink state money into a loss making venture. You would buy shares in GSM companies...which are allowed to make a profit because they charge market price.

10.How do you rate your performance at the end of your terms?

Power minsitry is just running the grid. Grid now is dependent on how much money is to be made from what the discos pay them. But as you know, discos are running at a loss because...poor have to breathe.

NB- as we informed you No light in Ikorodu- most of our Fridges and Freezers are normal and yet to freeze because no adequate lights to power them, even street lights have no lights.
•We hope to hear from you sir.
•Seun Osewa-over to you to deliver to the Minister of Power- is our Nairaland Forum Contribution by a Concerned Member.

But when they tell you the solution is allowing them discos to set their prices.....you would shout let the poor breathe,

Well, at the end, YOU won't sell at a loss would you to let the poor breathe,

Anyway, I ;look forward to you calling me an APC supporter, a tinubu supporter even an excuser of bad government. When I have just told you in plain terms why your government is bad. cheesy

But it does not matter. Poor got to breath. cheesy
