sunboy: With due respect, this is not making sense compared to the former submission you responded to. How can you say "Ashawo' is a broken English word?? This should only be suggested by people without any knowledge of english and the origin of the word. Can any English word be broken into Ashawo? Even the English man will wonder in confusion how an unknown word is said to be broken English. Is simply a broken yoruba word infused into the spoken broken English. |

MrColdsweat:Yoruba education should be seriously questioned. Later they say others don't have history. So folktales is their own history? Igbo have different histories for the different tribes that that makes up the igbo nation, that doesn't mean Igbos have no history except for the lazy yoruba who hates to explore outside his comfort zone 2 Likes 1 Share |

Thebadpolitican: The child can mean anybody. Even outsiders that came in and shines for the Edo people. Omo in Yoruba is child. Omo oba, is Child of King. This title cements the history that indeed, an Ife Prince came and was installed to preside over the affairs of the Edo people. Who knows? Sometimes internal wrangling among families can be so severe that the opposing sides will prefer a neutral person to be chosen to preside. The Ife Prince ruling in Edo does not in anyway mean he founded Edo. 1 Like |

agabusta: Read again where I said it was derived from Ashewo which is a Yoruba word. Broke English by definition = A type of English that has some element of local content in it. Broken English varies by accent and local content. It doesn’t not have to be derived from an English word. Words like commot … has got nothing to do with English language nor is it linked to any local language… those are broken English words that got adopted and accepted. The Carribean patio is constructed exactly like this too. To reaffirm, the word Ashewo is a Yoruba word, borrowed by broken English and used across West African countries that speak broken English. In parts, this is accelerated by the fact that most Afro beats originated from Lagos which happens to be a Yoruba state. Ire o! 1 Like |

sunboy:"Ashawo' is igbo rendering of "Ashewo'. Don't bring your Lagos madness here. Every ethnic language and expressions contributed to pidgin and everybody uses them without knowing the origin Hausa words in pidgin include wahala, wayo, berekete, Hausa expressions include: E don do (it's enough). This is literary translation of "Ya yi" Igbo words in pidgin include tey, una etc Igbo expressions include , think say, know say, hear say etc these are wrong literary translation verbatim from Igbo to English Think say = chere si Know say = Mara si Talk say = kwuru si Many other examples Now the igbo word unu (you plural) was corrupted to "una by another tribe probably south south tribes before it entered pidgin. Jamaican pidgin still use "unu" which is the correct igbo. This was exactly how a Yoruba word Ashewo was corrupted to Ashawo by Igbos before it entered Pidgin |

lexylaw40: At the bolded, the version I was told and read about later was that it was becoming difficult for a new King/Ọọni to be chosen for whatever reason. Ifá then said the next king would walk in from a forest in the Eastern direction of the town. Not long afterwards, Ikaladeran walked in from the forest in the East in his royal robes and was in total shock to see himself being hailed as King in a foreign land considering he was running away from Benin where a nefarious plot to murder him had been uncovered. He then uttered the words "Izoduwa" and without wasting time and with no regard to the language barrier, his coronation proceeded immediately. He was already wearing royal robes as he was a member of the Royal family and wanted to be identified as such on his travels for safety sake. I believe he never went back home despite all the entreaties from Benin as the people that wanted to kill him had they themselves being killed. Ikaladeran/Odùduwà was able to adapt easily to his new Kingly status, albeit in a foreign land, because he had being groomed from childhood to be a Benin King/Ọba. |

Thebadpolitican: Either ways, they seem to have a connection in history. The Benin crown most especially and the yorubas. The interesting thing to note here is that it seems it is the Benin Crown itself that has a strong tie to the Yorubas and not the entirety of the Edo people. 1 Like |

Christistruth00:Obagodo of Igodomigodo. A very sound investigative work. So, the forebears of Ugbolokun which later became Ufe (Ife) had contact before the Oduduwa dynasty started in Ife. It's the fear of losing out in a power tussle that has made the Oranmiyan dynasty descendant to deny their paternal Yoruba and Ife origins. Their maternal lineage is Bini and they are also Binis so the dynasty will remain. The Ogiamen and Ogiso families should reach a peaceful settlement because it is too late to remove the Obaship dynasty from the throne after over 800 years. For the Yorubas, the Binis are related through marriage and royal ancestral bloodline ties so whether in Ife or Lagos Island, Binis will be welcome as part of the larger family just like the members of royal families in many European countries are direct cousins or family members. 3 Likes 2 Shares

sunboy:You're correct. ASEWO/Ashewo is the Yoruba word for prostitute while the "Ashawo" is a bastardized or corrupted version of the Yoruba name Ashewo by Niger Delta speakers who were based or lived in Yorubaland, and which gained gradual use in pidgin from the early 1980s in the hugely popular Wale Adenuga-owned semi-erotic Ikebe Super magazine which sold all over Nigeria back in the day. I used to atimes read the magazine featuring the character Dauda the Sexy Guy back then. Of recent, the Yoruba word for roasted plantains called BOLI has also been annoyingly corrupted to "Bole" in the Rivers State/Niger Delta area. Why not just simply use the exact Yoruba pronunciation and spelling?... After all hamburgers are hamburgers, hotdogs are hotdogs, shawarma is spelled shawarma. 2 Likes 2 Shares |
