Apart from the military, Police can do the work of all other security agents including some of the paramilitaries like the road safety, customs, DSS, VIO, Civil Defense

You can't just drive someone private car provided it isn't commercial and you aren't a car dealer,bearing same,Surname or giving satisfactory answers most especially if you heading towards a boundary state.
Car theft in Northern Nigeria is high compared to other partys, due to lack of checking points.
Once drove my friends car in Port Harcourt, he had to come pick it up physically by himself from police station. For that I gave them kudos tho,despite it ruined my plans for the day.

There is no law against driving another person's car. That is why the terms and conditions of the Insurance policy has made provision for it. You needn't be a car dealer either. Like you said, all you need are satisfactory answers to questions. You could be stressed a bit if you are a young man but someone a bit aged, there should be no stress.

I was just asking questions to learn.

I didn't know until now that police could ask someone for driver's license, because my over 10 years of driving, police has never asked about my driver's license, but they do ask about my car particulars steady.

This is Nigeria where the role of roles of our force is duplicated sometimes they don't even their roles. But it's advisable to have all your documents and drive license not be a victim of this people.

It seems the NPF as turn to jack of all agencies in the Nation...

In a country like Naija u will be correct. But Stricto sensu police doesn't have the power to do so, the Police Act didn't empower them to do so.
have you for once read the police act? what I listed are not just hearsays. Police power is beyond what you think.I was one so I know what I'm saying. If you're going jeje on your own a policeman has the power to stop and search you. The one that PRO told people that police doesn't have power to search your phone is bcoz Mobile phone didn't exist when the act was created so it was not listed in the act lol. After a policeman search you and doesn't find anything incriminating he still have the power to take you to the station base on mere suspicion ground, he can still charge you to court without concrete evidence so it's left for you to hire a lawyer to defend you else you will be reminded straight off. I think the police act needs to be amended....

No, however, in the U.S. the first thing a cop asks you when stoped are 'licence and registration please'.
USA n Nigeria is not the same law. I don't think they have FRSC agency hence the police is assigned to do that

it's even in the police act they can stand in place of the military and perform it's function when they're not readily available or inadequately present to defend the state from foreign invasion or the like. Peace keeping mission is also a military duty which police also performs.

Can you imagine many people displaying their ignorance through their comments and still forming as if they know it all. Other agencies even envy police, but they're abusing the power, forming alpha and omega, that's one of the reasons military and police never agree. If they're in joint patrol and it happens that the most senior policeman's rank is equivalent to the most senior military man's rank the policeman is required to lead the team coz it's internal security. Lol this normally cause problem 😂 and That's why they mostly separate them these days. Police is the father to all the others security formations but military no dey gree.

The Nigerian police are not even exercising up to 60% of the power given to them. And if they do, many Nigerians will be on the street demanding for a review of the police act

Do police have the jurisdiction to demand nor ask for driver's license?

I was highly frustrated today, while I was on my way rushing to an event to meet up with the 10:00 AM deadline for the event which I was also the chairman, a group of some fiercely-looking police officers flagged down my vehicle and I slowed down.

One of the officers came towards my vehicle, ordered me to come out from the car and started demanding for my driver's license. I was like, what is going on?

In as much as I am aware that police officers have taken it upon themselves to be asking people for their vehicle particulars, which is a good way of tracking stolen cars, they asked for it and I provided it, but asking people for their driver's license is what I think is out of the picture.

I tried to exercise my right as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by briefly dragging it with them initially, which I think this issue of police asking for driver's license had raised dust sometime ago, but I realized that I'm still in Nigeria, last last, I settled with 5k, this is with abeg o, after several hours and minutes had gone by, I arrived the event place by 01:15 PM, an event slated for 10:00 AM.

like I said earlier, asking for car particulars from people by the police is good, but asking for driver's license is where I think the issue lies. I thought anything that has to do with checking of drivers license is strictly under the jurisdiction of the FRSC?

I'm feeling nothing but anger and cheated which gave rise to many questions going through my mind;
Who gave the police officers the jurisdiction to be asking for driver's license?
Is there any amended law(s) that granted the police force that power?

Oga the have the right to ask u haba ,for u to ask that question sounds some how , how can u even do that , na wow , I wished they detained you for the rest of the day , how can u be driving on high way , and expect police not to check your license, ..... Now ur arrogance cost you your time and money , if your papers and license are intact police will never harass u , impossible .

The Hollywood movies I saw had the cops asking for "license and registrations" and letting you go away when you've I.D yourself. Unlike their Nigerian counterparts where they would mostly demand for bribe before letting you go.
. Cops over there are mostly treated well by the employers, better pay, standardized training, functional equipment to say a few. Also, friends and relatives hardly bother their employed bro/sis with demands and begging unlike naija, where the reverse is the case

they don't have all sort of unnecessary useless revenue forces like FRSC, LASTMA, VIO,AGBERO, LG BOIZ, all they have is either federal police or state police and it's under judiciary, there is no minister of police affairs or whatever

Most people just don't know the power given to police. Police na general law enforcement agency..

Can arrest you for any offence.

Police have power to arrest you with or without warrant that's why their ID cards are called warrant card.

Police can search you with or without warrant.

Police can perform military, custom, immigration,ndla, road safety, etc duties.

The power is just too much and that's why they misuse it.

You are right the idea of police came along when man left barbarism for civilization and had Order but for there to be ordering there has to be Law so a unit for maintaining Law and order had to be made and that is the police they are the primary custodian for investigating crime or break down of law. There is police unit for everything, Traffic, anti BomB, Border patrol, Riot , insurgence , kidnapping anything thinkable they really have power.

If you had a driver’s license, you wouldn’t be telling us this story. Go do am bro and stop giving away free money to policemen. If you have done the right thing, they cannot extort you. They would have to beg you. No policeman can chop me anyhow🤣

Actually the police have no rights to ask that, but when they ask for your proof of ownership incase d car is stolen, they need a form of identification to clear things

Why shouldn't the Police ask for your driver's license? The Driver's license is the document that showed that you are allowed to drive.

they'll ask for that,
thats what identifies you as the owner of vehicle not vehicle particulars.

you may have particulars which does not align with your ID

No! Driver's License showed that you can drive and you are allowed to drive.

THE POLICE HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK FOR NOT ONLY YOUR DRIVING LICENCE, BUT ALSO YOUR CO-TRAVELLER'S ID, IF THEY SUSPECT YOU GUYS ARE ON YOUR WAY TO SNATCHING SOMEBODY'S GF! grin

The duty of the POLICE include, but is not limited to:
1. Crime prevention;
2. Crime detection;
3. Prosecution of Offenders;
4. Protection of Lives and Properties;
5. Entertainment and Friendship (POLICE IS your Friend, take it or leave it);
6. Spying on Citizens; &
7. Any Other Business.

They use their discretion to determine if you are a Criminal or Trainee Criminal and Act accordingly.
If a man is armed with a GUN (whether Police or Not), he has many rights and privileges that only a trouble maker begins to question! grin grin grin
