Well, he studied Civil Engineering. I guess if he was hungry enough, he would be applying for a scholarship in the US and eventually end up working for Mobil, Chevron, GE, Eaton, Caterpillar, Tesla, Google e.t.c. in the USA even before graduating from an engineering MSc or he could decide to stick with KPMG or Boston in Nigeria. That would be his prerogative.

I studied engineering as well - OAU. Alot of my classmate that went the consulting route, most quit after one year or two years and are in various location in Britain, US and Canada. I worked in Britain as well and currently working for a Canadian firm in the energy industry. Some veered off and went for an MBA, then moved into the executive management side of the engineering firm.

The only one that stayed with business consulting/advisory (PwC) is now a director in South Africa. He did not even go for any MBA, he just got his ACCA.

My opinion is just from my own experience. Maybe newer grads have different paths they prefer to follow these days.

Interesting. Well, na individual preferences.

P.S. With this kind of profile, you be Chief Tribalist. Chai! The white man must continue his dominance in the world. If he ever fails, the Chinese man takes over.

My worry is, at the end, not much impact is felt in terms of research and production, which is the end product of any education, academic and research institutions all over the world. Our educational system and its products should be responsive to the yearnings and developmental needs of the country. Greater percentage of the first class are already seeking for further studies outside the country, where they will later reside permanently. David Akanmu won't even do his NYSC before he secures scholarships to top schools in US.
That's because most engineering grads leave the country for masters abroad. They mostly will not come back due to higher standard of living in those countries.

However, alot of my now retired professors at OAU finished from Urbana, Stanford, Yale e.t.c in the 1960s -1970s. They taught us in the early 2000s with outdated books and text as well. That means the Nigerian corruption also kills talent.

A particular course, Engineering physics was set up in the era of Obasanjo in the late 1970, so that the graduates from the program can help build Nigerian nuclear power stations. Some of the graduate from that program ended up being lecturers at OAU and fell to the Nigerian system as well. One of the Drs then use to do rentals as side hustle to add up to his salary. If the guy had japa-ed back in the 1980s after graduation, his case might have been different, and he could have been rubbing shoulders with the likes of Barth Nnaji or Kunle Olotokun.

The elite MBA programs as ranked by USNEWS, Bloomberg and Forbes. Don't use the Financial Times to assess American B-schools' ranks. The FT works better for B-schools outside North America. Ivy Leagues mostly populate the M7, but there are subtle differences. MIT & Stanford are not Ivy Leagues, but Stanford GSB is part of the M7, but MIT Sloan is not. Brown University is an Ivy League, but not included as it has no b-school. The same applies to Princeton, another Ivy, but no b-school.

Ohh thank you for educating me.

I believe that you are young so I will advise you to be careful with these incorrect statements you are making. Go and ask your lecturers where LASU gets her Vice Chancellors from and why they go to UNILAG to get VCs. I can't even understand your story about questions. You better go and study hard and finish in LASU with great grades and go for your masters in UNILAG.

All those stories you are sharing have no meaning out there o. Face your studies. It's mostly those who don't meet up with the high admission criteria of UNILAG that end up in those schools.

Unilag is quite easy. A strong 2.1 in LASU is definitely a first-class in Unilag

Very apt! The sad reality of Nigeria! You are right with that " Engineering Physics " explanation. It was set up by OBJ, of which Shagari took it further to set up the four Federal Universities of Technology in Owerri, Akure, Bauchi and Minna to give effect to that Obasanjo's program. Sadly, the dream died the usual Nigeria way.

It is easier to convoke with stellar grades from numerical courses. That is why in most universities, the BGS tend to be come from engineering or the sciences, especially mathematics or physics. 1 + 1 = 2 everywhere. Ayodele Dada was the first 5.0 pointer from Unilag and he studied Psychology. His saving grace I believe was entering the school via direct entry.

But it is entirely false to say it is not possible to convoke with a 5.0 as an engineering student.

P.S. You did not graduate with a first class. First class graduates don't mock or deride their folks.

Very impressive, but less than 2%. From the looks, the sheer numbers looks "frightening" to those who lampoon "first class inflation", actual percentages don't say the same.

Nonetheless, it is a good one from Unilag. Schools in Eastern Nigeria (south south and south east) should learn from their counterparts in the west. No university in the east has convoked a 5.0 pointer. Does it mean students in the east are not intelligent enough to attain or merit it?

I would like to know the 5.0 pointer's primary school and secondary school academic results, and I would keep tabs with where he ends up after school: corporate Nigeria or postgraduate studies in the US. For the love of whoever he worships, he should not go to the UK unless under a prestigious scholarship like Commonwealth or GatesCambridge

McKinsey & Nigeria, what are you waiting for? grin Na this kind people dem like. I recall McK sent a one-time OAU BGS grad who is a nairalander test invite even after he relocated to Canada.

How someone will graduate with 5.0 CGPA in a Nigerian university baffles me. Somehow it feels fake.

I don't really believe it.

Before you come for me, I graduated with 1st class and was the top of my class in Engineering as well.

And it's always from this particular school. I feel they just inflate their students result.

How can you have 5.0 CGPA after Technical Drawing, Thermodynamics, Fluid mechanics, ODE, Engineering Maths, Statics, Dynamics etc, and none of them gave you a B? Haba

That 5.0CGPA in Engineering is fake.

You didn't graduate with first class. If you did you won't show this high level of low self esteem. We are talking about UNILAG. A of people have graduated with 5.0 across the faculty of Engineering in Nigeria. It's not new. First class get class

LOL!

This is something I have been following in recent years. I dare say no university in the east has convoked a 5.0 graduate, and schools in the SW convoke more first class graduates than their counterparts in the east. Na because I dey tied up, I already have an manuscript I had written. I just needed to input the data (already available) and make it an article.

Again, no university in Eastern Nigeria has convoked a 5.0 student. LASU, Unilag and Covenant and I think Babcock have done so. I am cocksure of the first three.

If you disagree, show me evidence where they (universities in the east) have done.

Why do I need to do engineering before I say something that is fact-based? It is easier to graduate with a first class in numerical courses than non-numerical courses. That is an undisputed fact anywhere in the world. There is a Nairaland thread of OAU's BGS from the faculty of engineering, all had high CGPAs which made them the highest.

Ayodele Dada (Psychology) of Unilag and the Law graduate from LASU are the only 5.0 graduates who did not do numerical courses in Nigeria. The girl from Covenant University did Computer Science, which is akin to mathematics.

No be first class be issues , na whether if you finish school hope say you go day earn better money or get better work

LOL!

No first class grad, especially from numerical programs, who has access to information, acts on them and is diligent is unemployed. I am ready to die on this hill!

You don't earn anything. A physicist can work in a FAANG company. Why do I need to know your academic program and where you work? I don't care how much you earn. I honestly do not. Your salary has no basis in this conversation.

it's very possible sir, I'm also in engineering Unilag. There are scholars and crazy minds here Alot of them, something about Unilag is they merit you any score you deserve and really worked for.
A is 70/100 so how is not possible for a scholar not to get 70 out of 100? There are people who Sabi and breathe in this book.

With all that the children of this generation have access to from birth, it may be right to say they are more brilliant. This is debatable.

When I first saw the number, I felt that they gave away first class too cheap in Unilag. But after I did my calculations, they are less than 5% of the total number of graduants. I hope they can create their own jobs? Only very few get good job these days.

It's easier to get first class 5.0 in Engineering than any other course if you're brilliant. Education is not difficult especially these days of AI and IoT.

Piece of cake if you're brilliant.

Once you have a track record from 100level it pays off for you.

People meet you for tutorials even if you don't know it and you will never forget what you teach.

So your fellow students push you to get a 5.0.

Yes it's not easy, if you have distractions.

With a little focus and brilliant mind, you get it done.

Bro. You are joking. Check out those who go for Engineering. They are usually the smartest ones. Yet, not all of them makes 1st class. So what are you saying? Most of them who didn't make that first-class in Engineering will likely find it easy making a first class in other science courses.
