Sukkot, Happy New Year once again.

Giannis Adetokunbo could have exaggerated a bit on that... I doubt if the Adetokunbo couple would have been openly hostile to each other's languages like that after being married for so long (Charles Adetokunbo being originally from Abeokuta in Ogun State and Veronica Adetokunbo being from Delta North in Delta State). Moreover they lived in Lagos State where Yoruba is openly spoken before migrating to Greece back in the early 1990s.

It's also the duty of a father to teach his kids his own language and the duty of the mother to teach her kids her own language in a multiethnic marriage. In the event that a woman is very fluent in both languages, then she can teach both since linguists say kids are able to learn or assimilate multiple languages at once.

hey my brother konquest happy new year to you too bro. Nah bro I do not see any reason why he would exaggerate something as serious as this. The same situation happened in the vivour Rhodes household with gbadebo where his mother commandeered him to the Igbo side and his dad had to eventually just disown him. The thing here is that the relationship between a Yoruba man and an Igbo woman is very innocent at the onset and the both of them are not thinking about tribe but lust. But further down the line when a child is involved that Igbo woman is going to get very possessive over the children especially if they turn out very well like gbadebo and Gianni’s and that is when she will discover that she is an extreme Igbo patriot and would try to steer the child the Igbo way. Now if the child does not turn out very well you will never have any problems lol. I believe aketi had same problem, they say his son and wife were like a tag team.

Lol... Interesting takes Sukkot.

Women generally tend to have this maternal instinct and pocessiveness towards their children... especially the males, while the females or daughters essentially gravitate towards their dads and become the pampered "daddy's girls"... grin

Giannis 'Sina Ugo Adetokunbo missed an opportunity to connect with family members within his paternal roots during that first ever summer visit to Nigeria. I have NO issues with him meeting his mother's family members who are from Delta North in Delta State (the same region of Delta State where the iconic actor and Lagos lawmaker Desmond Olusola Elliot's mother comes from. His father being a Yoruba from Olowogbowo, Lagos Island) but I guess there will be another time. Such homecomings from the Diaspora are usually NOT complete if it doesn't feature both sides of the family tree. If Charles Adetokunbo was still alive and not passed on suddenly in the U.S., he would definitely have taken Giannis to visit his own side of the family so he can get to know all his cousins and uncles. In any event it's usually good for a man to take the lead and teach his kids about his family ancestral history and language whether in a multiethnic marriage or not, while NOT denying his kids the knowledge of their maternal roots.

Also, the WhatsApp documentary ought to have scheduled a visit to the Governors of Lagos State and Ogun State (where Charles Adetokunbo, Giannis father originally hailed from). Giannis 'Sina Adetokunbo is on the same pedestal with my OG, Hakeem Olajuwon who had earlier won the 1994 NBA MVP, so he shouldn't just sneak into Nigeria without some form of media publicity. That should be done next time so that more folks who like him can welcome him to his ancestral roots.

When Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua came visiting Nigeria, he was given a rousing welcome in Ogun (his paternal and maternal home state of origin) and Lagos States with visits to many interesting locations to inspire people and also visit the Governors of those two states.

see if he had come to naija through his yoruba side they would have rolled out the red carpet for him. he would meet kings and sanwo olu ( governors ) and the president. instead he outchea eating eba and ugu in some prayer warriors house in obscurity. how can a whole giannis come to nigeria and receive this mediocre reception ? its shameless.

It's a shame people still think like this in 2024 for crying out loud. Gbadebo's father who issued a press conference responding to the political attacks on his son is who you are claiming disowned him? All because of tribalism? What a shame. If someone who is supposedly exposed can think this way, imagine the homegrown ones, smh.

That cracked me up... grin

Indeed, he would have gotten a red carpet welcome like you said. The Yoruba folks and most of the other cultures of Nigeria are culturally patrilineal EXCEPT the Ijaws who are matrilineal (like some Ghanaian ethnicities).

USA Rapper

G Unit Signee
Rotimi

Faith Odunsi

Superstar
Yemi Alade

Giannis Ugo Atemtokumpos

If u know u dont want dual identity for the kids stay away from those light skin beautiful Igbo women because they will never kneel down to thank u for sexing them they will always stand up and demand for there rights that is why people believe Igbo women are expensive in Igbo culture people like Ugo atemtokumpos in his Mother village is known as ,Nwadiala , meaning bonified Son/daughter and they are very well honoured there during celebrations at lot gifts are always reserved for them exclusively

If u are married to Igbowoman and want the kids to have nothing to with Igbos u will end up raising toxic family and the woman will always be the winner as children always have more soft spot and embraces mother more
Just allowed the kids to learn ur language culture and that of there mother they are mixed dont arrogantly impose or insist only ur language or culture must be practiced you will loose out woefully especially if she is Igbowoman

omojoibo:
As an NBA champion, the game of basketball has taken Giannis Antetokounmpo all around the globe, not only in terms of physical presence but also in regards to influence. But out of all the places that the superstar athlete has touched down in, there was one locale that was calling him, a country that he'd never been: Nigeria.

While the world knows Antetokounmpo for his Greek nationality, popularly touted as the "Greek Freak," a nickname he's embraced, those closest to him call him "Ugo." It's the star's Nigerian name, as he's the son of parents Charles and Veronica Adetokunbo. They immigrated from Lagos to Athens, having to change their surname to Antetokounmpo in the process, and there, the star and three of his four brothers were born.

Since then, the Greek-Nigerian has accomplished plenty, going from playing in youth clubs in Athens to being drafted into the NBA, becoming a champion in 2021 and being named one of the league's greatest players of all time as part of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. But in all those years, his 29 years specifically, he'd never been home home.

So this past summer, after missing out on the chance to visit Nigeria in 2020 due to the pandemic, Antetokounmpo and his mom, Vera, made the trek to his father's land. For his first trip to Lagos, the star was also accompanied by a film crew, including director Rick Famuyiwa, himself the son of Nigerian immigrants, to capture the experience for a new documentary done with WhatsApp, with whom Antetokounmpo has a partnership

tell you a truth and l kid u not; mixed-breed children have huge advantage in that they see life more than others. They tend to be less tribalistic.
They have eyes closer to that of God as they do not see much the differences in people but tend to see people as foremost humans.

All this long nite just to distance Ugo from his Igbo heritage what ur type failed to understand is that there is no Ethnic group in Nigeria called Anioma the people u are ignorantly referred to as Anioma are the same people known as Igbos of delta state most of them migrated from South East especially Nri in Anambra state and mostly proud and pro Igbos than those in South East

Yup! Giannis 'Sina Ugo Adetokunbo... One of five sons of a Yoruba father from Abeokuta in Ogun State and a mother from Delta North (Anioma) in Delta State.

I wish Charles Adetokunbo was still alive to help in fully integrating his four sons who were born in Greece with his paternal roots in Lagos and Ogun States. Coincidentally I watched a documentary film on these boys just yesterday and noticed that the two youngest Adetokunbo boys have strong American accents. Only Giannis and his immediate older brother who both play in the NBA still have the strong Greek accents.

Nice to know Giannis Adetokunbo made it to the motherland for the first time ever.

Only three players in NBA history have earned both the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards in the same campaign, with Antetokounmpo (Adetokunbo) and Hakeem Olajuwon being two of those along with Michael Jordan.

#Giannis, walking in the footsteps of my OG, Hakeem "the dream" Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets and the NBA MVP back in 1994.
