What's this again please?

I think I read it here that upon submission of visa application, an appointment date will be sent to you.

What do you mean by "you haven't secured an appointment date"?

House,

Please upon submission of FI Visa application, how long does it take to communicate an appointment date?

NB: I'm not asking of the waiting time!

No one will send you any appointment date. It is your duty as an F1 visa applicant to constantly search for a favorable appointment date.

Good day everyone
My wife just secured an admission (Stem MBA) to Ohio State for fall 2024. She was granted a GA position, 50% Tuition & living expenses as well as a 20k scholarship (10k per year).
She's a pharmacist with over 8 years working experience, while I'm a solar Engineer not doing too badly myself. We have a son that's barely 3 and the deficit for her is about 21k.

I would like to know what our chances are towards securing a visa and if it's best for us to go as a family. Thanks

Fisher MBA is a ranked program in the US. Applicant has a STEM undergrad. (pharmacy) and is sticking to that in-demand path via business school. Thus, this criterium should not be a concern.

Financing
Deficit of ~$21,000 is ~₦21,000,000 (at current consular exchange rate of $1 to ₦1,000 | https://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/en/step-3/
Questioning would hinge on how (why) this significant deficit would (should) be funded bearing in mind that MBAs (including indigenes) from better ranked schools are struggling to get desired jobs/means of income post-study.
Tip: has the offer been accepted?
- If "No", good. Devise bargaining chips and ask Fisher for more funding.
- If "Yes" (and the deposit has been paid where applicable), it maybe too late to use this tactic.

Home-tie
The young one is a reason both parents should be together as this MBA is a full-time program.
However, it raises concerns as to how established the spouse is (in the home-country) that he can (readily?) move to a foreign country to (technically) baby-sit? The spouse to an MBA candidate on F1 visa would be on an F2 [i.e. cannot work thus would likely have zero (0) income]. Usually, a spouse with child/ren staying back in the home country is one of the typical items cited as home-ties per application for a non-immigrant visa. There is no right or wrong answer here; the decision as to how best to move has to be made by the couple so that they can equally shoulder the consequences of their decision.

Thanks for this advice. I'd try to reach out and see how far I could go with the request for more fundings.

Hello everyone

I got a conditional admission to study computer science. The condition is that I have to go through a graduate pathway course. My sponsor is a family member in the US (a citizen). My appointment is less than a month. Graduated in 2019.

Please what are my chances of securing a visa. Is having a family member in the US a disadvantage?
Thank you

One word answer: "Yes"
Empathetic answer: "It depends (on how the family member is featured in the non-immigrant visa application)."

Purpose
"Why this program (computer science) at this institution?"
"Why the US?"

Financing
"Why is that family member sponsoring the applicant?"
"Does the sponsor actually have the capacity to shoulder such financial burden?"

"What is/are the benefit(s) (think dollars and/or naira) of the proposed sponsorship to the sponsor?"

Home-tie
"Why would the visa applicant return to the home-country upon completion of study in the US?"

The University of Kansas just gave me my first admission denial in pharmaceutical chemistry (PhD).

Six more schools to go. I feel dejected right now because I thought that as a Pharmacist with master's in pharmaceutical chemistry that I stand a chance. 😒 😒 😒

Hello house;

I did my masters in the US not long ago. I’m about to apply for a new F1 visa to go for a PhD. Can I use the same login and password and information I use back then for my new DS160 in case I still have access to the login and all other things? Or I can create a new account with a new email and new information entirely as my circumstances have changed since the last time I filled one.

i guess each department of each school has time frame i.e deadline for their application and period to review application and when to expect decision. Have you checked to confirm if they had all exhausted all that and no decision yet?

Yeah I initially picked spring 2024, as at November when I wasn't getting any response from them I reached out to them (USC) and that's when they asked me to defer to fall 24.

Hey 🀠

There is no dress code for US visa interview but the general notion is that if you 're going for F1 visa dress as a student .

1. F1 (Bsc) applicants may be over looked (as a teenager ) if they dress any how .

2.F1 (MSc) applicants are expected to dress in accordance .. you can wear English or native but moderately and not flashy.

3. F1 (PhD) applicants are expected to display the highest decorum . You can wear English or native but you have to dress as if you re going to face panel of professors .

They have not make any decisions yet except for only university of Chicago and Rhode Island.
Many of them said their admission is on rolling basis

Where you get this information from?
Your mode of dressing doesn't determine the success of your visa interview. Just dress moderately don't over too dress whether you are a MSc or PhD applicant. Person wey wear palm, t shirt and trouser don get white paper before. If I am the one going I will just put in my native attire and palm...nothing concern me it is not do or die

On dress code:

Rely on the information/suggestion provided by the US Consulate/Embassy.
I wore ankara for my visa interview at the US Embassy in Abuja per an advanced degree pursuit. There was a male in suit who was refused visa amongst others.
It seems the visa officers decipher the reality of the applicant's profile by focusing on
- body language,
- comportment,
- facial expression and
- verbal responses
(and comparing them to written responses in the submitted form and/or documentation brought to the interview) than being distracted by the dress sense of the applicant.

Hey 🀠

You are still repeating what i pointed out because i mentioned native or English dress and i did not say don't wear palm sandal or shoe or slippers .

1. Embassy have denied people with suits , tie and shirt, native attire etc , dress code does not determine visa but it says a lot about your personality . If you want to employ a "gate-man " to secure your house and somebody come for the job interview wearing a Polo Ralph shirt with st.michael jeans trouser and 18 carat gold round his neck , Will You Employ Him ?

2. If (on PhD applicants) dress as if you are going to face a panel of professors is what is confusing you then that's one of the 12 figure of speech. I just meant " dress formally .

3. There are some international travel forums that discuss all these issues , US embassy sub website also give appropriate dress code info..those re my sources .

Hi everyone,

I graduated with first class last year in a school in Nigeria and I am currently applying to three schools in the US for PhD in Computer Science:

University of Alabama
Northeastern University and
University of Rochester

I got a notification from university of Alabama that they considered me for admission but would get back to me in the next couple of months if there's any available funding for me. Other schools are yet to reach out.

In order to boost my chances, I am considering applying to other schools but I would love to know which schools I stand a chance considering this time of the year when applications are already closing. I do not want to apply to a school where my chances are low.

Please, which school would you advice I apply to in the US for a PhD in Computer Science (I will need a school that gives full funding).

Thank you all

(BTW, it's my first post here. So, pardon anything not done right)

Explore University of Connecticut (UConn).
As mentioned, the application timing is not ideal for one seeking funding, so one has to pick what is left.
Generally, to resume in a program in the US during the largest intake (which has the most funding opportunities) i.e. summer/fall intake, an international candidate should start the process one (1) year in advance. (Some programs start orientation or experiential learning events in the summer though actual classes start late August/early September).

Suggestion:
- research the school mentioned above (and any others that maybe suggested on this thread),
- apply to them (explore means of getting application waiver e.g. by attending admissions events)
- wait till the admission and funding decisions for all the submitted applications are released before making a decision as to whether to proceed to visa pursuit or wait till 1 June 2024 to start the 2025 admissions pursuit.
