Igbo people sha
I fear who no fear them
They can drag anything draggable
Either they are dragging Lagos with the yorubas, or asaba with the deltans, or words that originated in other tribes as their own. Soon they'll start dragging Malaysia with the owners

Henceforth they should be referred to as "dragists".

Davido and dmw made the slang go viral it's an Igbo word
It is not an Igbo word!
I am Igbo, the word
" Aza" was first used by guys in Benin to code western union "MTCN" or Western union tracking code used in receiving money wired usually from abroad.
It later added metamorphosed to also include account number, especially account number of picker abroad, which also gave birth to additional slang - aza-man" .

Stop being a bigot with everything.
It is an Edo word , which was also made popular by ake-men - " if you know you know"

Another take. Some said it means treasury. I don't dispute all those takes. But it's also an igbo word for digits, numbers or account number
Which part of Igbo speaks that

You people should rest. Igbo people could easily have borrowed the word from Bini people and vice versa. Unless anyone can tell us the meaning of the word syllable by syllable (a, za), it's very hard to tell who owns it, but in my opinion, it sounds Edoid than Igboid. That's my opinion.
With many centuries of contacts with each other, we are bound to have similar words. I personally believe most of these ethnic groups were part of a larger group.
Till tomorrow, the word for hand/arm in my Yoruba dialect means and is pronounced same way as it is in Igbo.
Hausa word for matches is "ashana" which only makes sense in Yoruba.

The word Obi Does not feature in that word directly. The fact that Obi is in that word does not mean it would be interpreted as the Igbo “Obi” and Aza. The Obi there has a meaning independent of the Igbo Obi. It means one in charge of A treasure room

Aza is not ibo. Aza means bank in Bini language. In early 70's before yahoo boys started using the word my mom will tell me in Bini language to take the money to Aza which means bank.

You know bini but you dont know igbo. You can say aza is bini, you are right. But when you say aza is not igbo, then you are wrong. Just because you dont know that aza is also igbo does not mean it is not igbo. Rather it is your ignorance, and your ignorance does not equate something being right.

Today, there is a word in Igbo called "ashebi". Is that an Igbo word?

I’m Igbo but this word doesn’t sound Igbo and it doesn’t mean numbers.
There’s an Igbo word ‘aza’ but it means to sieve.

O na aza mmiri….o na azapu mmiri…

"but this word doesn’t sound Igbo"

and your proceeded to use the word as an igbo word in an igbo sentence as example. Even though it has another meaning in that example.
Dont you think you are contradicting yourself?

Below is an igbo dictionary that states the meaning of aza in igbo with also an example.
I think you should try and study your language very well.

Yeah, that's what I have been trying to explain to folks here but people just have a one-way-traffic-mindset borne out of ignorance.
Seems languages borrow words from each other. For this one, I cant say who borrowed from who.

I am conversant with Anambra and enugu igbo. But I dont know which of the igbos use aza. But I have known that word to be an igbo word for more than 20yrs because i read it in an igbo text book.

Check the attached example from an igbo dictionary

Again I just checked the dictionary, sieve and sweep are known as za in igbo not aza.
However, when you want to make a sentence, instead of using za which is a noun, you use aza which is a verb.

why is aye using it for treasurer position, that is what you should ask yourself. On whose soil was aye founded? This very same Benin city in 1977. What is the meaning of aza in Benin language? The truth is that there are many Bini lingo that gain entrance into Aye cult lingo and modus operandi. Korofo,Egede, Aza etc these are Edo wordings

Aza in benin is more like Account/Treasury House/Treasury Room or Save Box. Aza = Money Banking House (Owa Aza igho)...

It's quite different from the one from igbo.

Is not a Benin word
