Hello guys, please I need your advice. I'm currently in a dilemma on what to do with my life presently. I'm a lawyer called to the bar in December 2022. Afterwards I practiced in a law firm for 6 months before resigning due to the meagre salary and harsh work environment. I just couldn't keep up, Although I can confirm that legal practice was very terrific but it's something that you can only enjoy if you're well paid at the Law firm or company you work with to effectively maintain the standard expected from you.

I've been jobless for 8 months now as all the efforts I put into securing a job ended in futility. I'm thinking of going for my masters degree(LLM) instead of staying idle at home with my parents. I think by doing this I can keep myself busy and improve on my career academically while also trying to find a good job in today's Nigeria.

Serious advice needed please

My most sincere advice for you is not to waste your time & money on any master program.
Sit down and think of a skill you can learn, it doesn't have to be a tech skill.
However it should be something you can use to start your own hustle. But make sure it is a digital skill.

Course creation

See, whichever you choose, make sure you learn it and know it well.

Get a laptop and start taking prompt action.

Don't be moved by the initial failure you might experience, it's normal with new businesses.
Just be persistent and passionate about it

This is why you need to choose one option you love. It has to be something you love doing.

I am very sorry to say, making money is not taught in the 4 corners or the school.

This is an old way of doing things.
Go to school.
Get the certificate.
Finish tops of your class and
get a good job.

But where are the jobs?
Just a few are fortunate to land good jobs.
What happens to the rest. ?

Reason we need to be innovative.
And think outside the box.

Best of luck bro.

Masters program is not free, and with the present economic tution fee plus other expenses no be moi moi

The fact that you can afford a masters program and you limit yourself to looking for a job when you can start a SME or sumtin shows are enslave the mind of average school graduates are, the koko is to have a decree

Use that fund to set up a business, empowerment 1st

Ogbeni,

Use ya head

After spending 1million on LLM, how do you plan to recover the money?

Find a hustle. Since you are smart enough to pass law school, connect with ya mates abroad and help them with their LlM and PHd works.

If you have good connects, you can make 1million naira in a year.

You don't need more than 5 clients to hit that mark if you bill properly.

Don't do LLM first, join lawsikho instead and learn how to work remotely as a lawyer.

Also, if your money is much, consider writing exam for California bar after taking courses from Lawsikho.

Work, not for the money but exposure. The alternative is idolness

Anyone that can stay 8 months without working, is unemployable... I will not even forward their application letter (I withdraw it straight in the trash, because they lact work ethic).

All these guys, big degrees but small brain. Just with that your law degree you should be bringing in billions of Naira every year. Forget court just open your firm and get in the documents game. Let’s talk about the japa epidemic. Millions of people are applying for documents and passports that need to be notarized by a lawyer. Just being in the documents game you can make hundreds of millions per year. But like I said earlier, big degree small brain.

Funny people everywhere. Instead of gaining experience first, u re only after money as if the employer is paying base on ur experience. Make una learn to master what una learned from school be4 determining either ro master it or switch job/career.

why can’t you open your own law firm and start from small. You will have huge experience in doing that. That’s what my friend did in ibadan, and today he’s well known handling cases.

How will he pay for the masters without a job?

Will the masters significantly improve His chances of getting a job?

If the ultimate goal is to get a job , why not aim t get a job first? People who have not even finished secondary school and even drop outs are working at google , Facebook etc.

Focus less on getting a certificate and more on getting a skill that van add value to people and organisations.

And never forget, Unemployment is a choice.

My brother this is d greatest mistake I made in my life for not learning a skill after my first degree .. you know this ego of graduate na u won't want to work under sun or life a mere skill labour instead we would prefer office job with tie.
Although I found one later one but the pay is nothing to write home about till dates.

Now for me to go back and restart or restrategise the process ehn 🤔
I found it too difficult because am married now with kids 😢

boldsleek:
Who will pay for the master's?

You?
Your parents?
Like how much will it cost?

Why not use part of the funds for masters and learn a skill? Be it Electrical, plumbing, IT, repairs of industrial generators, furniture, pop installation, repairs of medical equipment, etc

When you have gathered experience, you open your own company, register it, start pursuing contracts.

The guy that's services our gen in my office charge is 50k that's after we might have called him several times and waited .., He is always damn booked and busy.

The security guy in my office who also doubles as a plumber is cashing out big time, the day he broke his piggy bank in my presence, just for 6months from his hustle as a plumber. I cursed my Nigeria certificate.

Think of being an creator of job, and not a job seeker even after your masters.

yes . Funny enough, they have fear in their heart to start small and grow big in the long run. They don’t want to suffer small before they hit much in their profession. Instead of the young lawyer to start his own law firm (a room apartment or a mini shop space), he’s venturing in to masters degree that will take his time, money and energy too. I guess it’s his parent that will sponsor his masters degree program.
