scholes0:at 91 percent, the lexical similarity is so high, such that Okojie asserted that an Esan man does not need to learn the Bini language before he understands it. Many dialects do not get close to 91, Benin and Oza is 72% 1 Like 1 Share

Ologbo147: While this may be true though, lexical similarity is just one factor that determines mutual comprehensibility. There are also things like language structure/grammar/arrangement, evolved divergent tones and inflections, speed of speech, use or lack thereof originally universal terms that are retained or dropped etc. What is the real life experience of people (native speakers of these languages) trying to understand the other will be the real determinant of how much they can communicate. Linguistics for example say Igala and central Yoruba are share about 60% lexical similarity. in practical terms however, I doubt a Lagosian can even understand one third (35%) of Igala. But if Benins and Esans do actually understand 91% of one another IRL, then surely both languages and even identities should have since merged into one. 2 Likes 1 Share |

scholes0:That’s true Esan’s intonation and the word for some technical terms set her aside as a separate language. They speak “Bini” like a Portuguese speaking it, also the word for some technical terms is also different between Bini and Esan. The word for blood in Bini is Esagien, the word for blood in Esan is Aranlen. I think the word for bone is different too. However the high rate of lexical similarity between the two languages gave these two languages uncommon level of intelligibility that other “lects” deemed as separate languages ordinarily would not have It is what has been studied o, it is there o, that is why Okojie asserted that even among present Day Esan generation, speaking Bini may be difficult, but it is unnecessary for an Esan to learn it before understanding it. As you already asserted, lexical similarity is not the only determinant of a dialect 2 Likes 1 Share

Ologbo147: But you know Usen's case is unique compared to these examples. These ones learned Ika and Ndokwa respectively because of proximity. Usen people speak a Yoruba dialect because of both ancestry and proximity. And that is why even though their history points to Ife, their dialect is closer to an eastern Yoruba dialect like Ikale or Idanre, and not a central dialect like Ife. Because the Eastern Yoruba and the Edos became their immediate neighbours over time, so they picked up both dialects. 2 Likes 1 Share |

scholes0:It is not what about Orogun who is said to be maternally Igbo, I also gave an example of Alilehan and Alisor who were Edo/Bini group migrated into proper anioma and are now bilingual. What would have happened to their Ife dialects, would it have died out because they settled in between two tribes, i would rather opined they migrated from Ondo state, because their oral tale is not in consonance with their linguistic reality. This is a video of Alilehan/Alisor who migrated from Oza- a Bini group and are now in the center of Ika speaking both Oza-a Bini dialect and Ika, the language they met on ground, this is a video of the history, the interview that was done in Alisor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiz3ZnlU1ro?si=957_NbgtMFfngZ6t 1 Like 1 Share |

Ologbo147: Obazuaye is simply Obaluaye. The L was changed to Z. Same in Osazuwa In fact, Osa is an Orisha in Yoruba religion. It represents the lagoon while Orisha Olokun represent the sea. When I say You know nada.. where next would you claim to be from btw? 1 Like |

OVB123:They know we are not one, that ignorant above is telling me the history of OSA. OSA as a word has presence in Urhobo, Edo, Igbo, Esan etc it is very unlikely it was borrowed. Seeing the significance of the word that it is used to address God. Most likely it is a cognate word for YEAI group of languages to mean God. It has its variations from Olise to Olisa to OSA and so on. If there is any word a tribe is going to borrow, it is most likely not the word for God. Not when its presence is spread across several groups that are said to be related. Zo as a word as i have already stated above in Benin means to bring to bear or to bring to life. There are several examples where zo was used both with Osa ,Oba Ehi, . Zo as a word-its usage is strongly knitted in Edo. There are several examples. e.g Ehiozuwa, Osazuwa, Obazuwa, Obazuaye, etc Benin was the empire, it is very likely this very title Obazuaye was borrowed by the Yorubas. Benin language was a well known language in the palace and it is not an uncommon scenario. There are sprinkling evidences of Bini relics with groups she had contact with. Down from Ogiame- the Bini title of itsekiri monarch down to Agbor with several Bini list kings and so on 1 Like 1 Share |

Ologbo147: I believe the Orogun case and that of Usen are far different. Only a few quarters of Orogun speak kwale and it isn't the lingual-franca of the people. The language spoken everywhere is Urhobo and a majority of them don't Understand kwale unless some very few who reside in some quarters. We also have this case in Kiagbodo between the Ijaws and the Urhobos. And surprisingly, the Ijaws in Kiagbodo are the ancestors to some Urhobo/Isoko clans but they somehow were able to get influenced by the language. Usen case is different. They speak Yoruba as the lingual Franca. 2 Likes |

Re: Olumide Akpata Music (Video) by Ologbo147: 7:22am On Mar 11 |
Efewestern:They don’t speak it as a lingua franca, lingua franca is like an official language that is used for communication by strange groups or related groups whose languages are deemed not to be so intelligible. They speak it as a first language, they speak Edo too, i added very similar example of Alilehan and Alisor with Edo first languages who migrated to Agbor, speak Agbor as a second language today and identify as such, you did not reply to that, there is a video evidence there, it is exactly the same scenario with Usen 1 Like 1 Share |

Ologbo147: Usen - Speaks more of Yoruba than Edo (Yoruba is the first language spoken by the people) Orogun - Speaks Urhobo and only a very minute quarters speak Kwale. Summary: Your analogy of Usen and Orogun is not totally correct. 2 Likes |
Re: Olumide Akpata Music (Video) by Ologbo147: 7:44am On Mar 11 |
Efewestern:I did not use Orogun anymore, i only added Orogun in the first place because of an excerpt i read that talked about Orogun descending maternally from Igbo. Orogun is no longer the point in discuss, i gave you another perfect analogy which was there from my first comment you quoted. Alisor/Alilehan speak Edo/Bini language as a first language, migrated into Ika, speak Ika as a second language today and identify as such. It it the exact same scenario as Usen . That is what i asked in my first write up to you 1 Like |

Ologbo147: there is nothing like "obazuaye" in Bini. it is "Bazuaye" I didnt ask whether its the family that descended or didnt descend. I didnt ask you whether Obasohan is the name of a big chief or not. what do Obasohan, Bazuaye, and Ize-Iyamu mean? 2 Likes |
