The Lagos food market ‘Ounje Eko’, offering discounted prices on essential food items across the state has commenced sales.

This comes after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered that food products at the “Ounje Eko” food markets be sold at a discount in all five divisions of Lagos starting on Sunday, March 17.

Our correspondent, on Sunday, March 17, observed that staple food items including rice, beans, garri, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper were made available at 25% discounted prices.

At two locations — Alubarika Primary School, Bariga and Gbagada Junior High School —visited by The Nation, residents trooped in large numbers to purchase different items.

One of the residents, Mrs. Amaka who purchased some items, expressed satisfaction over the food market and the prices of the items stating that they were cheap and affordable.

“I want to encourage other state governors to emulate this; this is a very fantastic and laudable idea.” Mrs. Amaka said.

Seems Lagos is intentionally about this Yoruba thing.

Thoughtful and well organised!

Can't wait to see this replicated in Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Kwara states'.

South West, the BEST side!

God bless Lagos.

God continue to bless YORUBALAND!

Good

But the first question is how sustainable this is? Will the states be buying food and selling at discounted price going forward? .

Secondly is that this is a distortion of the same market reforms Tinubu claimed to be carrying out. If you're creating a parallel market for goods, you are opening the market as a whole up for abuse and disruption in supply as the state certainly has more purchasing power than other marketers. A model closer home is the fuel subsidy that's being grappled with today.

The states and FG should instead invest in agriculture on a mechanised scale while giving food stamps to low income earners to augment their supplies.

The name 'Ounje Eko'.
In the past, Lagos, being a mini Nigeria would most likely have used a more cosmopolitan name for the initiative. Hence my comment.

Nice one but Is this sustainable?

A government dishes out calamitous economic policies that have impoverished the common man, then turns around to provide palliatives that are in no way commensurate with the sufferings they have inflicted on the people.

This is the more reason why APC government will never allow poverty to go away in nigeria.

Nigeria leaders are just so wicked.

See how bad Nigeria has degenerated under Buhari and Tinubu..

Look at the fools queuing up under hot sun for supplies like its a war zone

Even people of Gaza can not be treated this way ..

Do the right thing in office
And everyone will feel your impact.

this is just mere window dressing
Honestly, we have terrible and shameless leaders in Nigeria, sometimes I'm ashamed to be called a Nigerian.
