I supported petrol and education subsidy to remain but endorse power subsidy to go. Immediately petrol subsidy made way May 2023, power subsidy miraculously started to pick up, not neccessarily due to improved supply but overestimation of usage by DISCOs. Lets power be used used for the most pressing needs like water pumping, press ironing, lighting, and maybe few other neccessary uses. Cheap electricity should be for productive uses and not for staying on tv allday watching african magic or bypassing it to run printing press.

Did you see how the new tariff is said to be higher than tariff in USA? A country with 30k as minimum wage! This is how Nigerian government is encouraging corruption because people have to survive by all means. Do you get it?

This is the first time this Baba will directly attack Tinubu.
He cannot do boju boju again. He has now seen Tinubu for who he is: a man who doesn't give a damn about the masses, and has no plan to make like easier for Nigerians except for his boys and cronies.
This is exactly what we have been saying all these while.
The entire APC, from Federal to State to Local Hoveremt level have nothing tangible to offer Nigerians.

Any leader that wants to fix Nigeria must sit down with a think-tank committee and look inwards for solutions to the myriads of problems pressing Nigerians' necks.

Any input from IMF or World Bank or Brentwood Institute is bound to fail as those opportunistic institutions are only out to impoverish stranded countries.

Wonder what made some Nigerians believe that a man who has been a rogue, crooked and corrupt fella all his life will mean well for a country of 200M people. Now, the disguise can not hidden for long.

Developed nations; US, UK etc don't follow any dictations of the IMF or other Brentwood Institutions because they understand the working dynamics of their neck constricting satanic policies. The IMF is just using the myopic leadership of the developing or third world countries as their instruments of economic oppression and neocolonism to milk them dry and continue the grip hold. Too bad.

But Sir, the Developed Nations owns IMF and they in actual fact are the ones reeling out this Draconian Policies to be swallowed by our brainless leaders who basked erroneously in Reform nonsensical mantras.

Farooq employs emotional arguments in this piece, more pandering to the crowd than addressong key issues.

Firstly, only 15% of power customers are impacted by the tariff hike. This is the segment of our population that can afford it. The remainder 85% to which majority of the masses belong are not impacted. In fact, it is a proper Robinhood scenario where we 'rob' the rich to pay the poor.

Secondly, since the privatisation of the power sector in 2014, no meanigful progress has been made in the sector - in fact there has been decline across board in generation, transmission and distribution. This is despite trillions in subsidies paid to generate darkness. Will it be reasonable to keep doing the same thing yet expecting a different result? That will be the proper definition of madness. I would have expected an intellectual like Farooq to paint both sides of the picture if not for anything, for some debate.

Thirdly, this goes to incentivise the sector by reducing subsidies by more than half in the first instance. There is still subsidy in place for the vast majority of the masses. Those in Band A are mostly rich residents and manufacturing concerns. If they enjoy at least 20hrs of electricity daily, it will bring down their power costs significantly as the alternative power currently used by this same people costs more than twice the new tariff.

What I expect is for citizens to hold the feet of these discos to the fire by demanding the level of service for each banding group and in so doing getting more productivity out of the largely incompetent discos.

The courage to take the sort of decisions that this govt has been taking is unprecedented and though coming with short term pains, has significant long term benefits.

Sadly, a large part of what motivates a lot of them is simply the worst kind of fanatical, fundamentalist, extremist tribalism.

I am not sure its fair or right to say this. And at all events I believe he contributed to the NADECO struggle.

Before now, I thought Kperogi was a brilliant genius who think deep and make top notch contributions.
I currently doubt his intelligence on certain matters for public discuss. In these particular matter, Kperogi goofed big time. His stance for the poor is highly commendable but using that to cheaply blackmail the president calls your analysis to question.
NERC has come out to inform Nigerians that the electricity subsidy removal was only for Band A users. This decision does not affect Band B to E electricity consumption by Nigerians.
NERC released Kaduna Residents Band A users and it shows only 25 housing locations. This action taken is highly courageous from Mr. President in the sense that the rich no longer enjoy Electricity subsidy and money recoup will help to provide more electricity supply to other bands and graduate them from lower bands to higher bands.
Is Kperogi supporting the poor here or acting as the devils advocate for the Rich in disguise.
Please we all are not gullible

The government action will recoup funds from the rich for gas purchase by NBET, since gas makes up of over 70% of our power generation. This has been the bottle neck holding the power sector down, NBET Collect gas for the Gencos and act as a guarantor, Gencos produce this electricity and supply to the disco's, the disco's feed all the band's at a cheaper rate, especially Band A who has been enjoying light secretly daily. Disco's cannot recoup enough money to payback to the Gencos and Gencos cannot pay NBET for the GAS, rendering the gas companies ineffective because of the huge debt owed.
Prof. Kperogi please do a better research on this for a constructive comment

Tinubu is just trying to build the country on the right foundation.

The current foundation is based on rent and subsidies. No successful nation starts out like that.

Any nation paying subsidy now first hard to do the hard work. You sow, wait and then reap.

Nigeria started off with subsidies. Very bad start. angry

There is a place for pacing and timing in policy making. Even if you wish to implement policies like this, why is it always done in such a radical extremist manner? For example, dont take my word for it, research it - everywhere in the world where petrol subsidies have been removed, it has always been done gradually over a long period of time in order to mitigate the effects on the population as well as limit the ripple effects in terms of runaway inflation. Only in Nigeria was it done in one single day, a complete removal that spiked the price of petrol by 200%. This is an increase that has NEVER happened in any other country in history - and there is a reason for that. They are not mad, and they know that government is for the protection and welfare of the people, not to break the backs of the people. ONLY in Nigeria was such an insane increase effected in a single day.

As if that was not enough, just a few weeks later they proceeded to float the naira. In an import dependent economy where you pay dollars for almost every commodity on the shopping shelves that is suicidal. You can only support policies that devalue your currency if you are an industrial producing and exporting economy. That is the only instance in which such a policy will favour your economy. If you are an importing economy it will kill you.

The inflation triggered by the rash implementation of these two policies in such a sudden manner without thought, consultation and consideration has been back breaking. I dont know if you live in Nigeria or shop in Nigeria but if you do, you should understand that this kind of inflation is not a positive thing. It has wrecked the quality of life, it has radically impoverished Nigerians and it has shut down much industry.

Now while in the midst of this painful situation, this extreme hardship imposed by these policies, you then think that its the right time to jack up electricity tariffs by over 200%. It is useless that you say it only affects some consumers - those are the key consumers in terms of industry and that will necessarily increase the cost of production and that will be passed on to the prices of commodities again, thus having a further knock on effect on the already terribly bad inflation situation.

That is why I said, in policy making, there is a place for timing and pacing. Its not the right time. The government is going about these things as though it has an intention to destroy the lives of Nigerians, irretrievably impoverish them, and kill them. Heaven knows the amount of people who have died silently because of these policies are in the tens of thousands.

And their is nothing wrong with Banking System except the practices and use of Interest which Babylon introduced to the world and perfected by the Reprobate Jews.
