All those Tinubu's ashiwere supporters are still deluded waiting for an elusive hope that has no iota of hope but just renewed suffering and misery.

He was not part of it.

Political ascent, exile, and return
Tinubu was elected to the Lagos West senate seat in 1992 as part of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). In the wake of the country’s annulled presidential election in 1993 and Gen. Sani Abacha’s subsequent seizure of power later that year, Tinubu became active in a pro-democracy group, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). He was initially jailed for his pro-democracy activities before fleeing in exile in 1994; he returned to Nigeria after Abacha’s death in 1998.

Born on March 29 1952 his political career took off in 1992, when he was elected to the Nigerian Senate representing the Lagos West constituency. That was during the short-lived Nigeria’s Third Republic. After the results of the 12 June 1993 presidential elections were annulled, Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). The well-coordinated group effectively mobilized a groundswell of public support for the restoration of democracy and the validation of the 12 June election results.

I supported petrol and education subsidy to remain but endorse power subsidy to go. Immediately petrol subsidy made way May 2023, power subsidy miraculously started to pick up, not neccessarily due to improved supply but overestimation of usage by DISCOs. Lets power be used used for the most pressing needs like water pumping, press ironing, lighting, and maybe few other neccessary uses. Cheap electricity should be for productive uses and not for staying on tv allday watching african magic or bypassing it to run printing press.

Yep, once you bring in price controls and subsides, voodoo accounting results. Wuru wuru results.Companies do bad things to survive because under the price control inherent in subsidy, it is impossible for them to operate legitimately and properly.

You don't see the same kind of mess in companies that dont have price controls and subsides either.

A capitalist at the detriment of the poor. Have you forgotten that Nigeria is the world capital of the poor? How many poor people have they raised from the dung hills? Just be giving life to nonsense and a time bomb that will later consume the nation.

stepaside1:
Farooq employs emotional arguments in this piece, more pandering to the crowd than addressong key issues.

Firstly, only 15% of power customers are impacted by the tariff hike. This is the segment of our population that can afford it. The remainder 85% to which majority of the masses belong are not impacted. In fact, it is a proper Robinhood scenario where we 'rob' the rich to pay the poor.

Secondly, since the privatisation of the power sector in 2014, no meanigful progress has been made in the sector - in fact there has been decline across board in generation, transmission and distribution. This is despite trillions in subsidies paid to generate darkness. Will it be reasonable to keep doing the same thing yet expecting a different result? That will be the proper definition of madness. I would have expected an intellectual like Farooq to paint both sides of the picture if not for anything, for some debate.

Thirdly, this goes to incentivise the sector by reducing subsidies by more than half in the first instance. There is still subsidy in place for the vast majority of the masses. Those in Band A are mostly rich residents and manufacturing concerns. If they enjoy at least 20hrs of electricity daily, it will bring down their power costs significantly as the alternative power currently used by this same people costs more than twice the new tariff.

What I expect is for citizens to hold the feet of these discos to the fire by demanding the level of service for each banding group and in so doing getting more productivity out of the largely incompetent discos.

The courage to take the sort of decisions that this govt has been taking is unprecedented and though coming with short term pains, has significant long term benefits.

This metres tariff is a scam,it's the old crazy bill coming back in an electronic form.

My metres tariff classification was upgraded since last year from the previous rate to B-Non MD, meaning I use 16 hours of electricity daily. This is not true, as I don't use up to 7 hours daily and I make do with generator. The electric company steal from me with estimated billing on my recharge. Even with proof of usage they are not ready to reverse.

My own understanding is that Nigeria years of plenty (freebies) is over. And those years of plenty did not translate to good life for an average Nigerian. This model of democracy have bankrupted Nigeria and only benefits few. I can not have the money of these 2023 presidential contestants and want to preside over a country that's in intensive care unit

To be fair, I don't know what any other leader would have done without these measures to salvage the country from sinking or avoiding Haiti type of crisis

You guys can never see no good..

I'm highly dissapointed in this Farouk Perogi guy walahi
Why won't you be disappointed in Prof. Kperogi, since you see Tinubu to be infallible and omnipotent.
Please are you not aware that some areas designated as Band A are peopled with low income earners, how would someone earning less than #100,000 cope with this power hike? Considering that in a month with the hike, he has to path with not less than #30,000 for power bill. Taking to consideration also that to feed a household with 5 people, with the attendant hike in foodstuffs all over the nation, the family will spend not less than #50,000. Transport is not yet there. Other miscellaneous spending not yet there. Extended family upkeep not yet there. School fees not yet there. We need to just reason this thing out. Some families, their spouse may not even be working and some may just be doing menial jobs to help the family.
Let us tell ourselves the truth, all Tinubu's policies are not making the poor to breathe at all.
Another erroneous decision was labelling many places as Band A. Like my place was labelled one, whereas some time, we many not have light a whole day and some times when they bring it, it may not last more than 5 hours and some times 7 hours but they said we are using 20hrs upward light per day. What a bogus lie.
I think the poor need to start breathing.

Mr. Man, you guys should stop spreading unfounded lie. Tinubu wasn't part of the founding members of NADECO. The least you can say is, he is a financial member. He ran away and from exile he was financing the group.
Here below is what Osoba has to say concerning NADECO. Remember he was part of those that started it and again Tinubu's right hand man. So he cannot be telling lie because he has a first hand info.
Happy reading:

“However, I was lucky that one of the commissioners of police at Kam Salem House, then Prince Rilwanu Babatunde Akiolu – who later became the Oba of Lagos as Oba Rilwanu Babatunde Akiolu 1 – gave me the key to his office and asked me to sleep there every night.

“I was grateful for this but was apprehensive that I could put Akiolu in trouble if found to be aiding and abetting an ‘enemy’ of the regime. He asked me not to worry. I also used his office phone to contact my colleagues in the struggle.

Later, Commodore Dan Suleiman and I were charged to court for forming an ‘illegal organisation called National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).’ Interesting enough, the man who led our defence in court was Chief Abraham Adesanya, himself a leading member of that ‘illegal organization.’ Others like Chief Enahoro and Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti of the Campaign for Democracy were also arrested. Former Governors Bola Ige and Balarabe Musa were also detained with us briefly.”

There was no where Tinubu's name was mentioned as one of the founding members.

Yes, no doubt Tinubu later joined in the struggle and when the the theater of war was hot, he ran away to exile while his colleagues were arrested and some jailed because I saw in your comment I quoted you said Tinubu was jailed. Please in which prison? He was only arrested by the police and put at the counter and was later released before he flew to exile. There is no courage in kicking people who are already down, people who are down on their luck, and people who are down in the dumps as a consequence of being serial victims of a steady succession of cruel and self-serving governments who are servile errand boys of the racist sadists at the IMF.

There is no courage in oppressing the oppressed. That's cowardice. That’s callousness. It’s unrelieved maliciousness. And it’s not something to be proud of, not something to make a song and dance about. On the contrary, it’s something to be mortally ashamed of.
