It's no issue. The government welcome back all the people Japa did not favour even if your passport has expired.

Obviously you must have been overstaying illegally with an expired visa too if your passport is expired.

What's the rationale behind the expiration of passports when it's still the same person, same face, same everything. It's just a way for the government to get money from her citizens home or abroad , especially abroad on a regular basis.

People do. Expired passport and expired Visa are two different things. Although, an expired passport would mean an expired Visa. But you can travel back to your home country with an expired passport under some conditions.
