Nigeria is d last good place to live on earth.

Can we start knowing the VALUE you own as an individual before saying Nigeria s the last good place to live on earth?

Are you even nationally competitive, let us leave global competition out of it for a start.

You cannot blame your incompetence on a country

Nigerian Startups will be paying millions of naira in salaries while generating way less than what they pay in revenue. Most startups hope on funding to stay afloat. I think this is wrong in running a business. Fine offices, big salaries and very little revenue.

My brother he is right ooo. 500k is nothing if you're good. I was earning 3 times that amount in 2022 until most of us were layed off. Now it's very hard to see 300k salary sef

Tensazangetsu20, remember when we had this conversation?

That if you were earning a good salary in Nigeria and heavens forbid you lose your job that it is hard to get another gig that will pay you at the former level.

Even with your big wages in Naija, you can't get too comfortable. grin

Hogwash article.

Companies are actively recruiting for experienced hire and newbie who has lot of potentials.

You wont see SKILLED tech guy leaving IT for traditional industries.

There are so many moving parts in IT and you need to be well grounded and see how they influence each other.

I do not know where this op sees this false article. Genuine IT dudes are selling like hot cakes.

Are you in tech? If not, just read, learn and move on. There's a global retrenchment exercise from big tech all the way to start ups. Tech is now way more competitive now than what it used to be. In Nigeria, I can mention about 4 financial services companies massively downsizing. These are places I have friends, they are panicking and seeking alternatives including studying abroad and other roles as stated in the article.

This is not to mean that others do not make money from tech today. It means a lot of things are changing and doing so very fast.

Junior developer roles now require 3-5 years of work experience with knowledge requirements of a whole IT department.
Me I have dropped tech already o.
I'll look into investment banking or write ICAN and go the big 4 way.

I was learning tech so I can japa. But if God says I will japa, I'll definitely do with my investment banking or auditing knowledge.

Bro can you please share the road map?? Is it possible for someone with a life science degree to switch to this role too? Without a degree?

But why would a start up pay 500k naira?

Funds to be channeled to research and development ate used to pay unsustainable salaries.

Why won't it collapse?

Nigerian startups waste so much money on unnecessary ventures. They hope to get seeds funding to remain relevant.

Gone are the days of newbies with potentials easily getting recruited.
Which newbie can compete against people with > 5 years of work experience?

Even in the US where a lot of opportunities abound, some computer science grads with experience send about 300+ applications and get less than 10 interviews.

How many roles are open in Nigeria?

I just quoted a guy telling him now that he has no idea what the industry is saying. Things have changed drastically. Layoffs everywhere. If you have money, use am hold something. Moving around in tech now is harder and riskier.

What pains me about his view is that people like him do nothing, know nothing, and have opinion on everything.

Those in the industry know how it is now. It's difficult to get a high paying tech jobs in Nigeria, they will be pricing you like Crayfish. It's also riskier to move to other jobs. They may have projects they are working on. As soon as it's done, they give you two month break and lay off.

He was hired at a place where he earns less, than his former job where he earned 500,000 so he said the present money is not great as a result he had to cut down on his lifestyle. Not the 500,000 job he lost.

What is wrong with our educational system?

As long as you have a bachelors degree with at least 2:1, you can switch.

It will obviously be easier to understand concepts for people in related field, but you can do it.

I know of a Law graduate that had 2:1 at both his university and at law school. He wrote and passed each CFA levels in one sitting(he didn't fail any of the levels) while working as an investment banking analyst.

I know countless people from Sciences and Art backgrounds that wrote and passed ICAN and are now with the big 4 accounting firms.

For the roadmap, google has more information on that.

You wouldn't have said it better.
Who said with great tech experience any company in Nigeria can just wake up and lay you off? except for other reasons or the company is shutting down. It's not that easy. Tech remains the lifewire of many modern orgs even in this Nigeria.

I am in tech with many years of experience.

I am a Software architect for enterprise solutions , I code, I provision infrastructure, I optimise Database, I do data science and analysis, work on machine learning projects, build CI/CD pipelines etc

I work on different multi million dollars projects in various western countries and I own a tech IT firm of my own in the States.

So I am an authority in my field.

IT keeps looking for skilled personnel, aggressively.

Tech jobs always go through boom and burst cycle.
Tesla alone is laying off 16,000 (10% of its workforce).
It has been a layoff galore in major tech companies this year. This should be a wakeup call to those who are still employed--the road ahead is bumpy.
