There appears to be no respite for former Nigerian international, Tijjani Babangida, as his son who is about a year old has died from injuries he sustained in the fatal road accident that claimed the life of his father’s brother, Ibrahim Babangida.

On Thursday, April 10, 2024, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics gold medallist, his wife, brother, son, and maid were involved in a ghastly accident along the Zaria-Kaduna road.

While his younger brother Ibrahim died on the spot, Tijanni, who is also the president of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) and the other occupants of the vehicle were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

However, Daily Trust has learnt from a close family friend that Tijanni’s son eventually died in the hospital as he was badly hurt in the accident.

He disclosed further that Babangida’s wife has also lost one of her eyes following the severe damage to her face.

He said “This is a difficult moment for our friend Tijanni and his entire family. After the death of Ibrahim, his little son, who was battling for life in the hospital with him, also passed away yesterday (Friday).

“Right now, he is traumatised by the death of his younger brother and his son, who was always with him. His wife has lost one of her eyes because a part of her face was damaged.

“The maid also suffered a fracture in her leg, the same as a young man who was hit by the ill-fated car.

“Well, Tijanni has since been transferred to a hospital in Abuja where he is to undergo surgery on his damaged knee and other injuries.

“All we can do is to pray for God to strengthen him to overcome the tragic situation,” he said.

Nigerians hate seat belts which sole purpose and deliberate design is to save your life and minimize injuries to your body whenever and accident occurs by restraining your body movements so you don't hit your head or limbs on the hard metal parts in the car that may be covered in foam

Some drivers will even cut or dismantle the seat belts. I am very very sure that the one year old child was not in a baby car sear.

Something wey I warn my father in law for sey make e no ever try carry my children without strapping their car seats.

One woman with one child in our church said it was stressful for her to knead the seat belt through the back of the child car seat into the buckle...so she just placed her baby car seat in the car without strapping it down.

So I know how careless we can be and leave everything in the hands of God.

Same wag we would build story buildings without enough cements just to cut costs and then the entire building will just collapse one day and kill its residents.

Our mentality in this country is really not it at all.

So sad.

The drivers in the north are among the worst in the country…sorry to say. The speed is always excessive. In those days, traveling from Zuba for example to Minna, the drivers would keep the speed @180.
The same on the way to Kaduna, Kano, Maiduguri.

I wish them speedy recovery and may they be comforted.

The problem here is that most Nigerians believe that seatbelt was created for only those at the front seat.

I don't think I've ever seen anybody using the seatbelt at the back seat.

Sadly they're the ones who suffer the most whenever there's an accident cos they're not on seatbelt.

Staying alive is not a miracle. Death and transition to another 'world' is the actual miracle. Imagine seeing yourself in another world supernaturally after death. Is that not a miracle?
