.

If I have to do this again in year 2024(rental), these are the things to consider:

1. Insure the car ( compherensive)
2. 150k/200kk for caution fee
When caution fee is exhausted, retrieve your car
3. 50k for weekly fee
4. Only have small numbers of fleet you can manage, because you will be vulnerable and easily overwhelmed, one car, one headache
5 don't depend or expect much responsibility from the guarantors, most of them are poor.
6. Select your drivers carefully, some of them are drug addicts, gamblers and womaniser. I've had to retrieve a car from a hotel where the driver lodge with an olosho but refused to pay rent for three weeks.
7. Inspect your car weekly or bi weekly
8. Avoid familiarity with your mechanic, be ready to change him at any time and avoid him buying parts for you to prevent sabotaging, buy your own parts your self.
9. Install tracker to enforce shutdown of the car
10 avoid amateurs/novice drivers, some of them only know how to move the car forward, they don't listen to the car functionality or know the warning signs on the dashboard. A driver knocked my engine because he doesn't know the oil spillage logo on the dashboard

I wish you all the very best

Hmmm...u r in d best position to do well after having such a deep experience, but u japa when the going was about to get better grin I see ur major problem was hiring bad drivers, and not having someone other than u to manage them. why didn't u continue with d 4 good ones that gave u peace of mind and buildup from there, only hiring with the qualities of these 4 guys? It is well sha...

Let me add a few more points that has helped me over the years.

1. Your driver must have the fear of God. You will know this during ur interaction with the driver except u are also a free soul.

2. Guarantor must be a working class or someone with a very good business.

3. Driver does repairs of upto 10k.

4. Do whatsapp video calls regularly, gone are the days u cant see something if u aren't there.

5. Have ur spare part dealer on speed dial. Nobody else should change part in ur vehicle except at their own cost.

6. Mechanic only collects workmanship and should be available to go to Ajah from Ojodu if the car needs his attention. When driver knows ur mechanic can come anywhere he will not do all those stunts.

7. As much as possible let ur competent mechanic do all the repairs in d car. Not different people touching ur car. So u can track repairs.

8. Any thing that's the fault of the driver he takes responsibility. U beat traffic light, u pass one way, u park where there is no parking, u scratch the car... all that is not my business.

9. With your tracker u can regulate the car not to be overworked.

10. Don't give your car to a driver who doesn't have a place of his own or who sleeps outside and only goes home occasionally.

11. Don't leave ur investment in the hands of an illiterate. He must be enlightened, knowledgeable about driving laws, car maintenance and most likely a graduate or someone with driving experience in the State u reside.

12. Don't waste time to retrieve your car, I have collected my car less than a week after handing it over because I sensed the partnership will be a bad one.

13. When I say contract is cancelled after one week of default without reasonable excuse, I mean it. I will not wait for two weeks talkless of three weeks shocked when u no jazz me.

14. If u have a large fleet of upto 10 cars then its time u hired an assistant or a manager if u aren't in the business at all.

15. After all these, because it is God that blesses the works of our hands, partner with Him and He will teach you to profit. He will preserve your investment in the morning when they go out and in the evening when they come in. He will keep them from trouble and evil. The eyes of enforcement officers, ritualist, kidnappers, armed robbers will not see them. They will always be directed to avoid trouble. Pray regularly and commit your cars into His hands. Let me add that you need to have more than one mechanic. I use 3 trusted mechanics. One is close to my church, one is close to my office and the last is close to my house.

Still on it… car jerk while idle and most times loose power and go off. If I off the a/c on time, the rpm will balance again, but may not fire well. Scan detect map sensor and IAC code. On this matter, I don buy fuel pump, 2 throttle body, 3 map sensors, 2 coils, change belt, set timing. The car will work fine and suddenly it will just loose power, start jerking and it won’t fire well. It will work again and if the thing enter em head, same thing 😂
What car is these? Check your crankshaft sensor

All businesses face similar problems like the ehailing. Many years ago, I built a cybercafe using two desktop computers starting from a shop. As the business grew, I started to employ workers.
The cybercafe became successful and grew to 20 computers. I decided to expand. I moved into a three bedroom apartment. Set it up with better computers and standby power supply. The cybercafe runs 24hrs. We work day and night.
I started a computer training center and a repair section to take care of any breakdown computer.
Then along the line, I got a job that took my time completely away from the cybercafe.
I was relying on my workers to deliver daily income.
Most time I have to pay ISP subscription from my personal purse. At some point to pay salary became an issue.
I had to close down the cybercafe and sell off all computers, printers, photocopy machine, scanners, generators.
The reason why I shared this experience is that all businesses have challenges they face one way or the other.
It takes a lots of rigorous painstakingly effort to be successful in any business.
Your workers can frustrate you out of any business.
Ehailing is one out of many businesses that employ the services of a driver, mechanic etc.
Do people still succeed in business, YES.
Do people still fail in business, YES.
That's the irony of life.

The key thing we have to learn is that starting ehailing and giving out a car is like starting a company, u must map out all ur processes and determine the appropriate response, u must track your cost, expenses, consumables, u must improve on ur product and services, u must guard ur income without pity, u must master the system and most importantly hire the right set of people.
U must manage your people, processes and systems if not you are heading for failure.

Let me add that you need to have more than one mechanic. I use 3 trusted mechanics. One is close to my church, one is close to my office and the last is close to my house.

As a driver I tried to memorize mechanic locations in VI, Lekki, Surulere, Yaba, because ur car can break down anywhere and u will need to quickly fix and move. Especially electrical faults like battery, fan, kickstarter, alternator and fuse.
But I will boldly say that mechanical faults don't happen suddenly, they allow u to manage the car and reach the location of your main mechanic or they will give sign for days and weeks, then finally breakdown because u ignored the signs.
So having multiple mechanics is a sign of incompetence on the part of the driver. Having multiple mechanics is bad because u will not know who to hold responsible for sure when there is a bad fix. And ones ur mechanic knows u take the car to someone else he will start charging u differently. He will not be loyal again. He will not give u preferential treatment. Difficult to track repair history.

That doesn't mean in an emergency u cant call another person, but u must take it back to ur competent and trusted mechanic to double check what was done outside.

As a Partner, no other mechanic will work on my car if d driver expects me to make payment for it. And there are repairs that only my driver must do.

If your guarantors does not find you worthy of depositing just 100k on your behalf, that means they don't trust You Or they are not worthy of been ur guarantors.

So if in case you damage something worth 100k your guarantors will tell owner I don't have money?

People have given me car without demanding I deposit 100k and I have used it and returned it without any qualms. Is 100k easy to come by?

If I had a relative with deep pockets.. I wouldn't advise him/her to invest into ehailing.. it's too draining because of 35k / week.
The app companies are the main beneficiaries followed by the drivers then the investors. What kind of Arrangement leaves the investor at the lower end of the food table.

Imagine ,taking a 25% cut of whatever earnings the driver makes just because you linked to a customer, what about the guys that facilitated the MAIN tool
( i dont care about your 14 years driving experience in Lagos, even if the whole road map of Lasgidi is in you, as long as you dont have a vehicle, you cant do nothing in ehailing.) to execute such orders.,they are left with crumbs.. so pathetic.

I don't care about the 20 cars you bought as owner partner, even if you bought them brand new tear rubber, as long as there is no driver, you can't do nothing in ehailng. Can you? What about this angle?

Dangote is the richest man in Africa. He survives on bank loans. Are banks too at the lower end going by your postulation? Should banks raise interest rate to 50% so that they won't be left with crumbs and probably be richer than Dangote?

Baba business doesn't work that way. Set your charges with terms and conditions and comot eye from what drivers make.

Lol John, Uber and begging are not the only way to make money. Let me help you with 2 free ones that will cost you nothing.

1. Set up a foreign tiktok account and post 5 videos per day. Within 1 month, you can meet the required criteria for earning 30 - 50 usd weekly

2. Create a Twitter account, verify and gather up to 5 million impressions in 3 months. Sign up for monetization and cash out same amount weekly.

With this, you can sustain yourself without having to wait for money from a miserablé àgbàdo guy.

Your engine don dey near him grave

That's how someone was arguing with me that driving a vehicle on ehailing without thermostat is not an issue, that after 30 mins to an hour the engine temperature will rise and reach its normal level.

I then asked him only one question and till today he hasn't given me an answer, the question was . . .

at what time does THE MOST WEAR HAPPEN in an engine? I even asked him to use Google, yet he didn't say anything.

How can you be using thick engine 20w50 oil and driving with a cold engine for more than 2 hours in total everyday and believe your engine will last more than 3 years without losing compression or smoking? undecided

Guess what the guy later said, he started yabbing me that it's poverty mentality that makes a person drive a vehicle for more than 3 years without changing it undecided that its only here in nigeria its done sad that he will sell the car and buy another one to keep driving when the one he's using gets bad (the said vehicle is just 2 years in his possession)

I then asked him, so all those 2010 corolla that we import tokumbo from yankee to tincan and buy for N8 million naira has had its engine changed at least 3 times according to your logic? shocked because the guy said that it's not only one owner that used the vehicle in Yankee before it was shipped down here then I asked him again, so did the first owner change the engine before selling to the second owner who also changed the engine before selling to the 3rd owner who later changed the engine before having it shipped down to Nigeria? Just because they are 'rich oyibo people'?

The guy no follow me talk again cry ignorance or stupidity I'm still trying to place my finger on his issue 😒

NOTE:

The said person is an ehailing driver on this thread. I just hope the vehicle in his possession actually belongs to him personally, if not I really pity the owner partner embarassed

If you need a loan, apply for the FG loan. Some corp members are even receiving 50k as we speak. I don't owe you anything. Going by the criteria I even announced, you're not qualified because I said 1st 5 and your details came later. That being said irrespective of your phone, you can still make money any way. There's a reason why these three words are mentioned everywhere you read about engine wear and tear . . .

STARTUP

COLD ENGINE

THICK OIL

no be me talk, na the manufacturers and testers themselves talk am.

If you're driving a vehicle with an aluminium engine without thermostat and using 20w50 oil I am sorry for you. Vehicles with full metal iron engines don't have this same issue 😕

Banks scramble over themselves to loan Dangote money, because he is a sure banker..

Back to ehailing, it's the driver's loss, if you need 20 drivers right now, you can get them in 2 days , what about getting 20 cars?, that will surely take more than 2 days. ... drivers are always available, its a hard truth to bear, the aces are always with the investor.

The investor will simply liquidate assets and move into a new line of business.

Ask the White korope lekki to cms ,how much they deliver weekly to their owners. I don't want to come to the Yellow LT on the mainland ( oshodi - Sango)

If you are on watsap groups, if you see the way drivers are looking for cars to drive. There are very few cars unlike previous years...

It must be a win-win situation for all stakeholders , most drivers don't see this big picture.. The app companies are learning this truth . Esp Bolt. They made reforms because Bolt realised, if you keep losing drivers, they are losing revenue , it's just a matter of time.

If you are an investor and decide to venture into korope or LT transport business because you are looking at it from an outsider view.

The driver's operating korope or LT are they better than ehailing drivers.
They don't scratch the vehicles or default on payment?

Driver's are always available, that's a fact.
Post a vacant position in any field aside driving and see if you won't get hundreds of applications.

The Nigerian population has the manpower for any business an investor decides to venture into.

My point is every business has it own challenges. Just choose the one you can cope with, be it korope, LT, ehailing. Choose one and face the challenges.

No business without challenges. That's a known fact

I mentioned this the other day. This part here is extremely important. Prospective investors in the rental space must read it over and over again till it sinks in.

Once you allow drivers use any mechanic of their choice, you're asking for yourself to be scammed.

If you use any mechanic other than mine for something as simple as changing oil filter, forget about telling me talk more of asking me for the money.

There's also this tendency by some drivers to overplay every issue. While some issues require urgent attention, some do not affect the way the vehicle drives and will not cause any serious harm.

Example is hub noise. Don't come and tell me hub is making noise and you have taken it to one mechanic in Rumuokoro to change. You're on your own.

The watch man watches in vein if the Lord does not watch over the city.

Excellent insights as always.

Are banks also at the lower end? Yes or No.

Back to ehailng, The mere fact that cars are scarce doesn't equate flexing of muscle from owner partners. For goodness sake, both of you are business partners and not employee/employer situation, so respect agreement. If there is need for upward review, then adequately communicate and sign the new deal. Putting eye in your driver partners' earnings is a NO for me.

Owner partners can liquidate asset and move to something else. So drivers too can't diversify and shift from ehailng? Is their destiny tied to driving? I think drivers need to wake up and smell the coffee.

I said something similar some days ago that if drivers don't get cars to drive. They won't die. Before ehailing became a thing, everyone was surviving.
If government decides to ban ehailing, won't everybody move to something else?
When owners make agreement of 40k weekly and maybe share repair cost.
Owner will still be putting eyes on drivers income to see if driver is making more than him grin
