that story wouldnt even go that far because if my mother killed someone, she would have to face the consequences of her own actions (and will report herself to the police) and my best friend would never be arrested to begin with.

Because, if the shoe was on the other foot, and our mother was the one who was being framed for a crime she didn't commit, we would be picking up pitchforks and screaming for justice.

As a pragmatist, I say the best approach would probably be to tell the truth. We owe it to our best friend, who has shown us the true meaning of selflessness, and to the justice system, which relies on our honesty to function effectively. By speaking up, we can save our friend from an unjust fate and allow our mother to face the consequences of her actions, which will undoubtedly be taken into account given the accidental nature of the crime. Any other response is one driven by the emotional need for self-preservation.

Am I saying that if this ever happened to me, I'll sell out my mother in a heartbeat? Probably won't be that easy. I'm only just pointing out the right decision to make as a humanist.
