This must be skit, why buy car give woman?, why, how, where do guys who do those things string from. The man himself deployed a proposal format that requires him to kneel on one knee out of respect for the woman he plans to marry. That is why he was expected to get down on one knee. (Refusal to get down on the knee implies a complete lack of respect for the woman in question.)

Now, kneeling was too much for him; he could have easily employed another proposal format that did not come with that requirement at all, but that is not what he did.

Nothing says he must kneel down to propose in any settings whatsoever. Absolutely nothing. Did your old man kneel down to propose to your birth giver?!
