My rule of thumb; Any meeting you arrived on time, you are late.
Any meeting you arrived late, you don't value it enough.
Let's learn to arrive meetings ahead of schedule time, especially one which you agreed to the time with other participant(s)
it depends on your definition of on time.

Let me explain my own ways of meeting up with appointment.
If the meeting is 8am, if I get there 8am on dot, I'm late, I have ti be there 7:59am latest, if I get there after 8am when the meeting must have started, it means I never valued the meeting enough to have prepared early.
I'm usually time conscious, I gets to meetings early, including parties, and I sometimes feel awkward finding myself alone while expecting others.
Just regular guys hangout, I will always try to be early

There is no correct time. Your meeting is starting at least + or - 2 mins

You see that we both have a different interpretation of it, that's why I use that method for my timing.
For someone like me, I get irritated easily if someone is trying to keep me beyond agreed time, eg, a meeting from 4pm to 5pm, with opening prayer of 2mins, if I gets there by 4pm, it means the opening prayer will start by 4.01pm, instead of 4pm dot, with the meeting ending at 5.01pm now because I'm late.
At 4.55pm I'm already taking a glance at the time and the moderator.
Throughout my secondary schools days, and tertiary, I always gets to class early and resume on Day 1.
There was a week I was not in class because I was sick, my lecturer noticed and asked of me, just because of the punctuality they noticed which I never knew someone was observing
However, I don't place people around me on such rule, I only apply it to my daily living.

No being late. No excuses. You could be a British princess — no being late. By being late, you’re telling me you don’t respect me, and for men, for white men, respect is EVERYTHING. No being late.

Thanks so much for these words of advice. It's a wonderful contribution.

Punctuality is the sole of business, as they say.
Although, there may be some very few periods in our lives when we can't help but be late to appointments or meetings due to some unexpected or uncontrollable circumstances. But lateness shouldn't be a habit of ours.
Being punctual is a sign of being a responsible person. And countless doors of greatness have been opened just because of being punctual. It's a good way to get ahead of many others in life.
Yes.

The German did what I could do, especially in a society with abundant transport options. If na Lagos, one can understand, but a city where there are trains and trams, you came late? No. I no do again.

I would have done the same and I have done same. Lateness triggers me. I have a friend that is always late and I stopped going anywhere with her. I cannot come to pick you up and you keep me waiting for 30mins. If you don't respect my time, you don't respect me. Even artisans, if I notice you don't keep to appointments, I will stop working with you.
So how do you cope when the events you attend (informal) commences later than scheduled?

Punctuality is one of the major ways to demonstrate respect (for self and those you deal with) and dedication. I too cannot put up with being late.

Of course, we are humans, and are imperfect. If there is a genuine reason to be late, it should be communicated on time. In my entire work history, it's hard to believe, but I tell you here that I don't ever recall being late. I've worked in an international organization, taught in several secondary schools, and now working as a medical doctor. Across all these platforms, lateness was nowhere close to me. I recall the time I was in an international organization, I almost always sign after the cleaners. In the hospital I currently work in, I've never ever come to work late, not even by a second. I'm able to achieve all these effortlessly, I just have to wake up early and hit the road early. And we have four kids we prepare for school and all that.

While I worked in a teaching hospital in SE Nigeria, whenever it was time to take over a call duty from a colleague, I often showed up 20 to 30 minutes early (around 7:30am, for a call that would typically start by 8am). I like to acclimatize (I usually chill in the call room and plan my day). Also, showing up early is very relieving for those that may likely have gone through hell throughout the night. It will interest you to know that there are colleagues that would show up 10 to 20 minutes late, or more!

My point is, over here, a lot of us have issues with being punctual. We call it "African man time". I disagree with this term, there is nothing African about being late.

Now, back to the story. I cannot judge whether or not it was extreme to call off the date, we don't even know how late the lady was. I'm also not familiar with the German culture. So, it would be hard to make an objective comment here.

But if I had a date/any appointment and the person comes in late (without a good reason), I'll feel bad, and may make some conclusions about the person. I'm not sure I would have cancelled the date sha, not before calling this person to find out what's up. I mean, the person may be in a situation beyond his/her control...like a medical emergency, a traffic situation, etc.

In conclusion, I'd like to use this opportunity to urge us all to try to be punctual in all of our dealings. Time is one resource that once spent, it cannot be gotten back. Don't waste people's time, please. Be more responsible, show up at the time you agreed to be there. Being late is actually very irritating.
It seems you are a medical doctor right?

I get irritated. I end up not enjoying the event and I leave at my pre-scheduled departure time.
