My Job Hunting Experience At Beloxxi. by emeraldo56(op): 4:39pm On Jan 20
Today, I went job hunting at Belloxi with my brother. When we arrived shortly after 8:00 a.m., there was already a large crowd outside the company. We were told to wait because they would start calling people later.

By around 9:15 a.m., they began calling out the names of applicants who had been given forms to fill earlier. Those people were allowed inside for an aptitude test and interview. Anyone who didn’t get a form was basically left outside, waiting for further direction.

Honestly, I think this method is very poor for a company of Belloxi’s size. It’s an old and inefficient way of recruiting. We are in a digital era. A company like that should have an online system where applicants can submit their CVs, WAEC results, and other required credentials, whether for casual or permanent Staff.

That way, whenever there is a shortage of staff, the company can simply go through their database and invite selected candidates for tests or interviews. It would save time, reduce stress, and eliminate unnecessary crowding. Instead, you see people standing outside every day. Some people I spoke to said they waited until 5:00 p.m. just because they needed a job. That is really sad and unfair.

I personally left by 10:00 a.m. because I couldn’t imagine waiting all day like that. I’d rather continue searching for another opportunity. The only conclusion I could draw from the huge turnout is that either Belloxi pays well and treats their staff properly, or jobs are generally scarce and people are desperate for any opportunity available.

Still, for a company of such magnitude, this shouldn’t be happening. They need to do better. A proper digital recruitment system would reduce stress for applicants, improve efficiency, and even make security and crowd control easier for the company itself.

Plot twist..

They may be using the heavy crowd to still show the world their relevance, existence and effectiveness as a company.

Just a thought though..

BTW, beloxxi crackers biscuits used to be a very nice and delicious biscuit..I don't know if it's still retaining that...

This Op is not looking for a job.

By the time you are serious, if they tell you to wait for 3 days outside their gate, you'd even bring a mattress and pillow.

You even came here to rant and opened a poll on top their matter?

Hehehe.. hmmm.

People like you having this type of mentallty is reason why this country cannot move forward, you did not even think about the consequence of having a huge crowd where things can go south.

Na their papa company now.
When you build your own company, don't employ on merits. Employ your family members and friends and watch your company die.

I went for the interview but I was not chosen 😞 after all the stress I went thru standing from morning to 5pm it's really disheartening and I even know people working there but they told me I didn't pass the interview

I guess you're far off

What the poster is talking about is what I recently got exposed to and wrote about here on nairaland in one of my posts: The morality of continued hardwork is the morality of slaves
https://www.nairaland.com/8603403/moral-continued-hardwork-morality-slaves

Humans purposely sabotage the efficiency of machines just so they can create Jobs for themselves. They see hardwork for hardwork sake as good.

Hopefully, there'll come a time in humanity where unemployment caused by the efficiency of machines will be celebrated

Reading this is honestly heartbreaking. The ratio of physical exertion to the actual take-home pay in these factories is slavery disguised as employment.

It really highlights why acquiring a digital skill is no longer a luxury but a survival strategy in Nigeria. If you have the brainpower to pass their aptitude tests, you have enough brainpower to learn a remote skill. Standing for 10 hours for peanuts is not the only way to survive. Kudos to the OP for sharing this reality.

The Accounting Version of This Struggle

A young accountant earning ₦120,000–₦180,000 monthly in Lagos—especially those working in audit firms or mid-sized companies in places like Ikeja, Victoria Island, or Lekki—while living in areas like Ogudu, Ikorodu, or Alagbado faces the same arithmetic problem.

Transport alone can easily swallow ₦40,000–₦60,000 monthly, even with hybrid work. Feeding (home + office), data, and basic utilities can take another ₦60,000–₦80,000.

Before the month ends, ₦110,000–₦130,000 is already gone—and this is without touching:

Professional clothing

Exam fees (ICAN/ACCA)

Study materials

Medical needs

Family responsibilities

Emergencies (which Lagos never fails to provide)

What’s left?
Usually ₦20,000–₦30,000, if anything at all. Sometimes the month ends in overdraft, borrowing, or quiet family support.

Professional Costs Make It Worse

Accounting, like law, has hidden professional expenses:

ICAN/ACCA exam fees and annual subscriptions

Mandatory trainings and conferences

Corporate dressing (you can’t show up to an audit in a worn shirt)

Transport to client sites (often unpaid or poorly reimbursed)

A decent corporate wardrobe can cost ₦150,000–₦250,000.
For someone saving ₦20k monthly, that’s almost a year—assuming life doesn’t interrupt (it always does).

The Entry-Level Salary Trap

Just like law firms, many accounting firms still pay:

₦80,000–₦100,000 (some even less, with “experience” as compensation)

At that level, basic survival costs already exceed income.

So the young accountant is forced to:

Depend on parents or siblings

Skip meals or health care

Delay professional exams

Quietly burn out while “gaining experience”

And we all pretend this is normal.

The Structural Problem (Same as Law)

Too many young professionals chasing limited roles

Firms underpricing services to win clients

Clients delaying payments or squeezing fees

“Exposure” and “learning” used to justify low pay

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: When trained professionals cannot meet basic living needs,
quality drops, ethics weaken, and long-term commitment disappears.

People cut corners.
Talented people leave.
The profession loses respect—slowly, quietly.

The Big Question (For Accounting Too)

Do current pay levels for accountants in Lagos realistically match the cost of living in Lagos?

If not:

A. How long can this model survive?

B. Who will still be practicing in 10–15 years?

What kind of professionals are we unintentionally creating?

For Accountants Who Escaped This Phase “Like a Boss” 👀

The ones who made it out usually did one or more of these:

Specialized early (tax, data, energy, forensic, systems, advisory)

Moved from pure audit to commercial or advisory roles

Took remote or foreign-linked accounting work

Built side income (consulting, bookkeeping for SMEs, training)

Left traditional firms faster than expected

Treated ICAN/ACCA not as the destination, but as leverage

They didn’t just “endure”—they repositioned.

This is not entitlement. It’s not complaining. It’s basic economics.

A profession cannot remain respected when its entry-level professionals are financially exhausted, emotionally drained, and barely surviving.

Law has this problem. Accounting has it too.

And until we talk about it honestly, young professionals will keep suffering in silence—while pretending everything is fine.
