There are questions you need to ask a lady before you invite her over or agree for her to pass the night at your place. Even if your house was a hotel, receptionist will take your information before you can check-in. She owes you an answer about her current health status. Ask her if she has eaten, so that she doesn't find your next question absurd. Ask her if she's fine health wise. Don't feel like you don't want to bruise her ego or make her angry. She owes you an answer about her health if she intends to visit your place. |

CLOUDRepublic:Why do you guys keep using AN right before a word that starts with H? |
| Re: Before You Invite A Lady Over by CLOUDRepublic(op): 7:52am On Jul 14 |
AllBlack:The choice between "a" and "an" depends on the sound that starts the following word, not the actual letter. Although, that up there is just a typographical error. Good you called my attention to it |

You're right about that one |

CLOUDRepublic:You should have quietly and humbly taken the correction but see how you wrote this garbage with so much confidence because of empty vessel level pride. This is how people like you wear suit and tie and mislead people especially in public places like this. What school did you attend to learn such? Did any of your teachers even bother to teach you about VOWEL SOUNDS & CONSONANT SOUNDS or were they busy selling egusi in class? What was your score in JAMB (ENGLISH alone)? I dey correct you and you dey try TEACH me? Telling me NOT THE ACTUAL LETTER? Please, what sound does the letter make? Show me where it has become valid to use AN right before a word starts with H as regards places; I dare you. Typo? You deliberately added N to A and you want to tell me about Typo? I have been typing on keys (Typewriter) before keyboards came into existence and I know a Typo when I see one. Look at the the distance between A and N then shamelessly mention Typo again. |

Well, let's just talk about articles then... A, an and the. Let's talk about the rules guiding them, let's talk about the exceptions to the rules. Let's ask ourselves, is it always about the letters beginning a word or the sound beginning the word? What happens to the word "University"? What type of article is supposed to come before it between 'a' and 'an' and why? Let's learn English language under this post. I give you the floor... |

I know that my English is not perfect, but may this type of tongue lashing never locate me...🤣🤣🤣 stunnert: |
| Re: Before You Invite A Lady Over by notaveragejoe: 10:45am On Jul 14 |
AllBlack:The rule is based on pronunciation, not just the first letter. That’s why we say an hour, an honest person, and an heir, because the h is silent and the words begin with a vowel sound. Likewise, we say a university and a European country because they begin with the consonant “y” sound. This isn’t my personal rule it’s standard English grammar the op is correct The claim “Show me where it has become valid to use an before a word that starts with H” is incorrect. English has allowed this for centuries whenever the H is silent. It’s not a new rule or a matter of opinion. |

| Re: Before You Invite A Lady Over by AllBlack: 2:14pm On Jul 14 |
voortrekker966:Hotel /hoʊˈtɛl/ H is silent in Hotel.... Really? Thanks for the information. Please print it out and share to all your household. Just because you have a H factor impediment doesn't mean everyone else should share in your predicament. I know that fly must support shieet but try your best to hide how empty your head is and stop showing it about like it is the new fashion. |

BItt:and you are here because you understand anything about this or you just want to keep yourself busy by trying to appear relevant? okay there it is, you have got a reply. |
| Re: Before You Invite A Lady Over by notaveragejoe: 3:06pm On Jul 14 |
AllBlack:The context doesn’t change the rule. You are introducing a restriction that doesn’t exist in English grammar. The indefinite article depends on the sound at the beginning of the next word, regardless of whether that word is a person, place, object, or idea. Don’t you get ![]() So asking me to “show a before a place” doesn’t refute my point. The grammatical rule is still based on sound, not on whether the word is the name or description of a place. The fact that a word describes a place is irrelevant. What matters is how the next word is pronounced. Okay let me show you for learning purpose. an island an oasis an airport an embassy an inn And if the place name itself begins with a silent H we can have an Hour House (if that were the official name of a place) an Honest Kitchen (if that’s the name of a restaurant So there you have your example of using AN before a place Will be waiting for your response if you still think I’m wrong we are all here to learn. |
| Re: Before You Invite A Lady Over by notaveragejoe: 3:11pm On Jul 14 |
Samantha125:Fair enough. English has confused native speakers for centuries too. But in this case, the grammar rule is actually clear And Mr all black should unlearn that primary and secondary school version of using A and AN |

It depends on the person's regional accent, the "H" in the "Hotel" word is definitely not silent where I'm from. voortrekker966: |

Op made a mistake in the original post which he/she has acknowledged. Op was also right in stating that the choice between the indefinite articles 'a' and 'an' is determined by the phonetic sound of the first letter of the subsequent word, rather than the written letter itself. English is not our language and it is constantly evolving. I did a quick research and this is what I found: In modern English, "a hotel" is the correct and universally preferred choice because the "h" in "hotel" is fully pronounced. However, "an hotel" was once common in older, highly formal British English when the "h" was silent. This is now considered largely outdated. In order words, while 'An Hotel' was used more in the past, it is now considered obsolete and 'A hotel' is mostly used in today's English. Verdict: You are all correct but 'A Hotel' is more acceptable. |

Before you invite a lady over please send her for comprehensive medical check up. I mean check that her heart lungs, brain, kidneys are functioning properly for a woman her age. All medical history must be investigated. Otherwise you might be the one under investigation. |
