“stop Having Children You Can’t Afford” by Obogidi(op): 7:43am On Sep 03
Nigeria’s rising cost of living makes it harder for many families to properly raise children, yet people often avoid honest conversations about family
Having children without financial and emotional readiness leads to more poverty, not less.

A child is a serious responsibility, not a solution to problems

Many families struggle to provide basic needs like food, education, and healthcare

The issue is not about North vs South, but about lack of planning nationwide

Large families made sense in the past, but today’s economy requires smarter decisions

👉 The solution is not force or strict policies, but:

Better education

Access to family planning

Economic opportunities

Public awareness

🔥 Final takeaway:

It’s better to have fewer children you can raise well than many you cannot support.

100% supported.

If you don't have a job please do not give birth to children

Even if you have a job don't give birth to more than 2 children.

We already have too much population in Nigeria

If you people can't blame your government or maybe if you people are paid stipends to help them to blame yourself , these are the kinds of threads we get. Who still give birth to dozens these days na? Is it people who cannot afford money for trade, court marriage, white wedding or even diapers that will be giving birth in large numbers? Maybe you mean those who had four before Buhari and Tinubu came into power should go and kill two or three of them so that they can have one now.

Now tell me, apart from the northern region, tell me people from any other part of Nigeria who gave birth to five, six children from 2016 upwards? Now you want to push a narrative that having many children within these APC era of wickedness is the reason for mass poverty? Abeg drop that thing and blame those who deserve to be blamed.

The sad thing is those who need to see this are not here on Nairaland.

I wish government can really start creating awareness on the dangers of having children that one cannot take care of
Re: “stop Having Children You Can’t Afford” by thesicilian: 2:24pm On Sep 04
Children are one of the few consolations of the poor in a failed society like this. No one has any right to tell them when or how to have children

The government cannot provide electricity, cannot provide water, affordable food,no security, no jobs, nothing.
About the only thing that the poor can provide for themselves, you still want to come and regulate it for them?

Good idea, but it should start from northern Nigeria, if all southerners applies this, the northerners will never stop, they will use population to choke the south, and automatically cease power completely, claiming to be majority, which they still claim till today, if birth control will apply to the north, then is a welcome idea, but if not, the south will be sorry for themselves, or let's split the country so everyone should go their way.then we can talk about birth control.

I'm glad there are daily posts, tweets and threads on Nigeria's social media space about the importance of having a few children. When I preached this a decade ago on this same Nairaland, I was insulted.

Thank you Jesus 🙌🏿
Re: “stop Having Children You Can’t Afford” by jonsn: 4:03pm On Sep 04
I was just explaining this to someone yesterday.

Affordability in this case, is not only tied to finance. The emotional care is there, and most importantly TIME.

Those days, our GFathers, and GGFathers could afford many children financially, emotionally and still be there for the family.

Today, with your financial resources, if you don't make out time for your family (even with tech comms. especially for those on the move) to care, teach, and father or mother them, two children will still be unaffordable for you because you will only breed dysfunctionality in your home.

The key word is not just financial affordability.
It is being able to afford the resources required which includes TIME.
